The international magazine for the wire and cable industries

Wires and cables US-style at Interwire

Interwire o ers a fascinating insight into the world and workings of the wire and cable industry across the Atlantic. Indeed, the largest exhibition in the Americas has long been seen as a place for innovation as companies exhibit and speakers relay information to attendees on the ner details of the sector. This year is no di erent, albeit with a di erent format to the running of the three-day exhibition. An eye on the future is very much called for as a new theme running throughout is highlighted by the keynote speech from best-selling author Dr Shawn G DuBravac. His presentation, entitled “The future of wires and cables in a connected world”, is likely to attract many listeners, as the number of ‘things’ connected to the Internet surpassed the number of people on the planet more than ten years ago. Dr DuBravac is the author of the New York Times bestseller ‘Digital Destiny: How the new age of data will transform the way we work, live and communicate’. This explores how the world’s mass adoption of digital technologies portends the

beginning of a new era for humanity in terms of business, health care, nance, transportation and culture. Our own coverage of Interwire – and many of the companies that will be exhibiting there – starts on page 60. Please take the time to stop by our booth 222 and collect your free copy of EuroWire and sister publication Wire & Cable ASIA . Also featuring in this issue is news literally from out of this world! UK-based Spectrum Technologies reveals how

its technology was used by Lockheed Martin Space, one of the contractors that worked on NASA’s Mars InSight lander, which touched down on the planet in November last year. Turn to page 9 for the full story.

Spectrum technology is ‘out of this world’

The company has supplied all of the biggest names in commercial and military aerospace worldwide. In late 2016, Spectrum introduced the new updated sixth generation Nova 800i series laser wire markers. using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) is NASA’s latest Mars lander and is designed to explore the deep interior of Mars. Lockheed Martin is the InSight prime contractor responsible for the complete spacecraft system. Dr Peter Dickinson, CEO at Spectrum, said: “We may only have played a small part in this interplanetary project but I and all the team at Spectrum are exceptionally proud and excited to be associated with the Mars Insight programme. InSight is truly leading edge and we look forward with anticipation to seeing what new knowledge it turns up while it explores Mars and its deep interior.” InSight (Interior Exploration

to process and identify all the wiring in the manufacture of the electrical wiring system for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (NASA JPL) Mars Insight lander. Spectrum supplied Lockheed Martin Space in Denver, Colorado, USA, with a fully automated Nova 820 UV laser wire marking system in 2014. This is used in the initial stages of electrical harness production to laser mark, measure and cut wires to length. Apart from using the equipment for the InSight programme, Lockheed utilises the equipment for many other different programmes, including the wiring produced for the Kennedy Space Center for the Orion programme. The Nova 800 product range was specifically designed for complex aerospace wire harness manufacturing applications. Since the company was founded in 1989, Spectrum has supplied almost 1,000 laser wire marking systems to over 50 countries.

IN November last year, NASA’s Mars InSight spacecraft started its dramatic descent toward the Martian surface. After separating from the cruise stage it entered the upper Martian atmosphere at a height of 80 miles and a speed of 12,300mph (5.5km per second). As it slowed down during its descent the probe’s protective aeroshell reached temperatures of 2,700°F (1,500°C). At an altitude of 36,500 feet (11km) and a speed of 861mph, its parachute deployed, slowing it to 134mph before it fired its landing rockets at a height of 3,600 feet (1.1km) to land at a gentle 5mph (2m/s). At approximately 19:53 UTC, mission control received a signal that the spacecraft had successfully touched down at Elysium Planitia. What did go unnoticed is that UK company Spectrum Technologies, which celebrates its 30 th anniversary this year, played a part in the landing. Steel rope extrusion from Rosendahl

ROSENDAHL has extended its product portfolio with extrusion lines for steel ropes. Before jacketing the ropes, the bundle is opened to apply protective grease or wax. Extrusion technology is not only the line’s core, but Rosendahl’s core business. This is where it does most of its research and development activities. It is not only cables that the company extrudes. It has recently extended its know-how for steel rope extrusion, which, when it comes to the details, is quite different to cable extrusion. Jacketed steel ropes are commonly applied for stay cables or mono-strands. Stay cables are primarily used for cable-stayed bridges. Unbounded mono-strands are used in civil engineering in pre-stressed concrete structures (PT systems). Often, several single cables (mono-strands) are combined to form a bundle (multi-strand), as well. A single strand usually has a diameter of ¼" to 1 1/8 ". Other dimensions are also available. Before jacketing, these strands are coated with a special anti-corrosion material. Rosendahl applies permanent elastic corrosion protection, grease or wax, to those strands. This coating provides protection against corrosion and water penetration and reduces internal friction. The difficult part is to coat the individual steel wires with grease or wax. Specifically for this type of rope preservation, Rosendahl has developed a rope conservation machine, which

is used immediately prior to the application of the PE jacket. The company has introduced an on-line monitoring system for the grease/wax coating application. This ensures high quality and performance control during the entire conservation process. RosendahlNextrom – Austria Website : www.rosendahlnextrom.com

Investment in pushers at Polish site

The use of electric motors provides the additional benefit of the absence of smoke and fumes in the factory. After the demonstration of a drum pusher, Stanisław Wajs, head of maintenance services at Tele-Fonika Kable, said: “The Nu-Star dual-motor Super Power Pusher tug seems quite unique in the market; it’s very durable and generates enough power to easily push our largest cable drums. “Compared to other solutions, such as forklifts, the electric tug is a much smaller and cheaper solution to move heavy industrial loads. The Nu-Star electric tug is extremely easy to use and much safer than attempting to manually move the reels. “After positive feedback from our employees on the production floor, we invested in three. The Nu-Star electric tugs have revolutionised the efficient and safe movement of cable drums throughout our production lines, reducing labour costs or tasks that would normally require at least two members of staff.” Nu-Star Material Handling Ltd – UK Website : www.nu-starmhl.com

TELE-FONIKA Kable SA has invested in three Nu-Star high torque cable drum pushers to improve workplace safety and factory productivity. The company is a European manufacturer of cables and wires, operating globally, and supplying some of the largest companies in industries ranging from telecommunications to mining. The expansion of the Tele-Fonika operations across eight production plants and increasing changes to health and safety regulations prompted Tele-Fonika to review workplace safety and efficiency when moving cable drums. As part of the production of wire and cables, large cable drums of up to 60 tonnes need to be moved through the production lines. Tele-Fonika contacted Nu-Star’s Polish distributor to find a solution for pushing cable drums in a safe and easy way to reduce manual handling. Bartosz Sowiński, Nu-Star’s Polish distributor, explained: “In order to push heavy cable reels, a high starting torque is required to overcome rolling resistance; therefore I recommended a free demonstration of Nu-Star’s high-torque dual-motor Super Power Pusher electric tug.” The dual-motor Super Power Pusher is powered by two 1.5kW electric motors generating up to 17,600N of pushing force. The machine is equipped with a special roller application for moving both cable drums and paper rolls.

TO be Industry 4.0 ready means that production technology must be interoperable with other systems that speak the same industry protocols over a common Ethernet infrastructure. Smart factories require the utilisation of advance-prediction tools, so that data can be systematically processed into information that allows operators to make the right decisions. Beta LaserMike smart gauges provide industry-standard connectivity via common communication protocols, and built-in web server support provides mobile connectivity for smart diagnostics and smart service. For example, on a typical wire and cable production line, Beta LaserMike gauges keep ‘fingers on the pulse’ of the jacketing extrusion process. Gauges are integrated into production to accurately capture measurement data, product data and variables along critical points in the process for end-to-end inspection. Using a Beta LaserMike process controller, production personnel can intuitively visualise dimensional, SPC and trend data in real-time to maintain tighter product specifications. Closed-loop control with the extrusion line and integration with other networked systems enables material savings and improves product quality. At the enterprise level, the Beta LaserMike process controller provides OPC UA connectivity (the industrial network protocol for enabling Industry 4.0) across the organisational value chain via PLC, SCADA, MES and ERP systems. The process controller acts as an edge device when connecting to cloud services. Measurement and process data becomes part of ‘big data’ and enables organisations to use cloud analytics for data-driven decision making, increasing agility and competitiveness. From a global support perspective, NDC provides customers with 24-7 care via its customer service cloud portal – myNDC. “In this next phase of the industrial revolution, measurement technology plays a crucial role for quality-conscious organisations on the road to Industry 4.0,” said Ian Benson, vice president of marketing for NDC Technologies. “With the fusion of production technology and the Internet of Things (IoT), measurement technology requires strong connectivity and the capability to capture quality data faster, better and more flexibly and transfer it to networked devices and systems. “It is truly the framework for increasing process efficiency and realising bottom-line benefits in the smart factory. And, it not only pertains to on-line measurements but also includes the integration of at-line and off-line gauging technologies.” Beta LaserMike (an NDC Technologies brand) – USA Website : www.ndc.com/betalasermike Beta LaserMike networked measurement technology ready for Industry 4.0

New website for Fastec Imaging

FASTEC Imaging, a manufacturer of high-speed cameras for industrial troubleshooting and scientific applications, has announced the launch of a new video-rich website. an application-based approach, which enables engineers, scientists and others looking for high-speed imaging solutions to easily match their application needs with the products available. Slow-motion video is used throughout the Fastec website to exemplify the myriad applications for which Fastec high-speed cameras are used. On the homepage, normal-speed footage of a watch and mainspring is contrasted with a “slow-mo” version of the same, along with footage of a honey bee to demonstrate the relationship between what humans see with the naked eye vs what is seen with the aid of a high-speed video camera. “The fundamental focus of the new Fastec website,” explains Tim Brandt, product manager for Fastec, “is to provide resources for those looking for high-speed video camera solutions as well as those already using high-speed cameras.” To that end, the new Fastec website offers a guide, “High-Speed Cameras and Slow-Motion Video Terms and Concepts,” as well as application articles, blog posts and tutorials. A Camera Calculator Application can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets to enable the user to establish the best frame rates, resolutions, lens requirements, depth of field and illumination for their slow-motion application. An OEM and custom engineering page on the website is included for companies looking for any level of engineering development or product support for their high-speed imaging needs. This may range anywhere from a re-branded Fastec product to a fully integrated hardware and/or software solution.
