Ultra-Mix one-step process compounding unit
TRADITIONAL XLPE cables are produced with ready-made compounds from various suppliers. These compounds have predefined recipes of base LDPE, silane or antioxidants and peroxide. Ultra-Mix © has been developed for combining separate compounds on-line during extrusion. offers improvements in several aspects. There is a wide range of suppliers offering base LDPE grades for cable insulation without silane or peroxide and antioxidants. Customers have a large freedom of choice. Traditional XLPE compounds are limited to using chemicals that are solid at room temperatures; otherwise the compound would suffer from chemical sweat out. Shelf life makes storing premix compounds a concern. The use of on-line dosing removes some of these restrictions and gives the cable manufacturer a wider selection of silane or peroxides and antioxidants. On-line dosing offers a significantly longer shelf life. Using alternative peroxides can even result in increased extruder outputs and longer production runs. The E-Xhead system for silane or peroxide and antioxidant dosing consists of one to seven feeders with gravimetric measurement for accurate dosing. When different solid compounds are ready as a batch, precision injection of silane or peroxide and antioxidant is effected. While liquid and solid are mixed together, the next batch is under preparation. 350°F bench oven from Grieve No 1024 is a 350°F (177°C) bench oven from Grieve, currently used for curing the plug- on end of long cables at the customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions of the oven measure 28" W x 24" D x 18" H. 2 kW is installed in Incoloy-sheathed tubular heating elements. The Grieve bench oven has a modified roof, which provides seven slots with adjustable covers, and 2" insulated walls. Additional features include Type 304 2B finish stainless steel interior and Type 304 #4 brushed finish stainless steel exterior.
Controls on the No 1024 include a digital indicating temperature controller.
