Editor

Rory McBride

The May Issue Welcome to the latest issue of Tube & Pipe Technology magazine. This issue we have features on cutting, the increasingly significant world of environmentally friendly tube technology and also washing and cleaning technology. We also have an in-depth technical article that looks at how pipe manufacturers can replace conventional hydraulic controllers with technology controllers from the experts at Siemens. Our show focus this month is on Tube Russia 2013 so I hope everyone heading out to Moscow has a great trip and that they do not experience some of the unseasonally cold weather we have been facing this ‘spring’ in the UK. Over the coming weeks we will have members of the team jetting all over the world to meet you and to hand out the magazine – from Boru in Turkey to Made in Steel in Italy, and later in the year I will be in at Tubotech in Brazil and looking forward to the usual warm welcome at Fabtech in Chicago. Next issue we will be focusing on the Tube Southeast Asia 2013 show, the interesting area of bending, end forming and swaging as well as hydroforming and as always all the latest news about the tube and pipe technology industry from every corner of the globe.

Front Cover Story: EFD The roots of EFD Induction go back to the launch in 1950 of a universal induction hardening machine by the German company Induktionserwärmung Fritz Düsseldorf GmbH (FDF). While FDF was expanding in the 1970s, an induction revolution was taking place in Norway, where engineers had figured out how to transistorise frequency converters for induction heating. In 1981 three of those engineers founded ELVA Induksjon. In 1983 they unveiled the Minac range of mobile converters. Workpieces no longer had to

be brought at great cost to a stationary induction heater – the heater could now go to the piece. In 1991 the managing directors of FDF and ELVA met by chance. They talked… and speculated. FDF was strong in stationary induction hardening machines. ELVA was the agile innovator with a track record in finding new applications for induction heating. What if the two companies got together? In January 1996 FDF and ELVA merged to create EFD Induction. And the rest is, as they say, history. Today, EFD Induction is Europe’s largest supplier of induction solutions for industry (number two worldwide, but they aim to change that!). If you’d like to know more about them, their products, and how they can help boost your productivity, just get in touch.

completed the design for the Cascade Chinook field and, as part of the development programme, sent a team of engineers to Arc Energy’s facility to discuss the critical welding elements of the project and carry out a design review for manufacture. Arc Energy’s welding engineers, led by managing director Alan Robinson, who has a Master’s degree in welding and is one of a small number of UK registered International Welding Engineers, helped the Vector team develop its drawings to a ‘designed for manufacture’ stage. The two companies then worked on a joint-venture basis to produce the fabrications that connect to the Vector PLR, which is 3.5m tall, 2m wide and weighs approximately five tonnes. Arc Energy Resources is a specialist in weld overlay cladding and fabrication for the oil and gas industry. The company’s expertise provides protection against corrosion and wear for a variety of process and pipeline equipment for use in hostile environments. Arc Energy also offers in-house test weld, heat treatment, PMI and NDT facilities. Industry certifications include ISO 9001:2008 quality management, ISO 3834-2 fusion welding of metallic materials, and the internationally renowned ASME U and R Stamps, as well as ISO 14001:2004 environment management, Investors in People and OHSAS 18001:2007 Health & Safety management system.

of the pipe quickly become coated with hard scale and wax deposits, reducing production by restricting the delivery of oil ashore. ‘Pigs’ are introduced into the pipeline using specially designed launching and receiving vessels to clear debris, and to batch and clear residual product. Frequent pigging is required to ensure that production is optimised. Vector’s subsea division, which was awarded the contract for the 15,000psi rated pig launcher by Technip Group,

ARC Energy Resources has completed a contract to carry out specialised welding and fabrication services on a pig launcher and retrieval system (PLR) destined for a time-critical application in the Cascade Chinook oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico, where operator Petrobras is laying an additional subsea pipeline to increase production. The contract, for the subsea division of Vector Technology Group, involved Arc Energy welding a soft landing arm system to the PLR as well as fabricating a structural split flange support to enable the hub of a Vector OPTIMA subsea connector to be attached to pipeline end terminations (PLETs). In addition, Arc Energy fabricated and welded a number of specialised components to produce lifting brackets and control panels that needed to meet similarly demanding welding procedures for the Vector specification. All components were fabricated to high standards and close tolerances by Arc Energy in accordance with American structural welding codes AWS D1.1 and ASME VIII. Output from the Cascade Chinook field has a high hydrogen sulphide content, which necessitates the use of very tight welding parameters in order to adhere to the demands of NACE. As a result of the long pipe lengths, the internal surfaces

Armacell awarded BuildingConfidence accreditation

the financial stability of suppliers and sub-contractors. The scheme in turn benefits suppliers and sub-contractors by providing reassurance that main contractors using the scheme will take a fair, open and transparent approach to sub-contractor and product selection. Armacell’s product range covers insulation products, covering systems, acoustic solutions, fire protection, ancillaries and accessories, foams for OEM applications and PET foam cores. The company’s flexible, foamed rubber tubes and sheets are used to insulate pipes and ductwork in buildings, but they are also of use in demanding industrial applications. The products prevent condensation forming, absorb sound and vibrations and protect installations against energy losses. This is a growth market as, in view of the rapid pace of climate change and rising energy prices, the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations will play an even more important role in the future. The requirements made in national rules and regulations on energy saving in buildings are being tightened, and measures to increase energy efficiency are becoming increasingly important for economic reasons. When buildings are refurbished to improve their energy efficiency, the insulation of installations is considered to be one of the most effective and cost-efficient single measures. Armacell also sees opportunities for growth in the global oil and gas business, which is now served by a separate international team.

Post-weld solution for record-breaking pipeline

induced stress cracking (HISC). Such cracking is caused by the presence of hydrogen in the pipe’s heat affected zone. Although precautions are taken during the fabrication and welding stages to minimise hydrogen content, PWHT is still deemed the best way to achieve safe levels. “A big factor behind Bonatti’s decision is our proven experience in this specialised PWHT area,” added Mr Migliavacca. “Our colleagues at EFD Induction in the UK, Jon Philpott in particular, had previously devised a PWHT solution for another In Salah contractor. It involved the supply of three truck-mounted PWHT units, which have now been operating in the tough Algerian environment for months.” The PWHT units built for Bonatti are currently undergoing final testing. “We hope to get the units into action as soon as possible,” said Mr Migliavacca. “ISG is after all a critical project. Its seven fields not only supply key foreign and local markets with gas, it also involves the world’s first full-scale carbon dioxide capture undertaking at a gas field. It’s an honour to be part of such an exciting and meaningful initiative.”

The Bonatti order involves two complete PWHT systems for on-site operation in the Saharan desert. Each system is truck-mounted, and consists of an EFD Induction ‘Minac’ 70/110 power source, specially designed induction coils for 8"-12" and 16" pipe, and chiller and quench units. The two PWHT systems will be used for butt-to-butt welding of 13% Cr and 13% Cr to duplex steel. “Welding these heterogeneous materials is a technically advanced task,” said Mr Migliavacca. “But when used in conjunction with PWHT, such welding offers tremendous benefits. 13% Cr pipe, for example is extremely cost-effective because its strength means that lighter wall thicknesses can be used. Duplex on the other hand is extremely resistant to corrosion.” Post-weld heat treatment of 13% Cr and Duplex flowlines is necessary in order to minimise the risk of hydrogen

OIL and gas contractor Bonatti has selected an EFD Induction post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) solution to help build the world’s longest 13% Cr onshore pipeline. The corrosion resistant pipeline is part of the In Salah Southern Fields project (ISSF) in theAlgerian Sahara desert. This in turn is phase two of the larger In Salah Gas (ISG) project, which first came on- stream in July 2004. ISG – a joint venture between Statoil, BP and Sonatrach – is Algeria’s third largest gas development, and currently has an annual production capacity of around 9bn cubic metres. “This is a significant project for several reasons,” said Stefano Migliavacca of EFD Induction in Italy. “To be selected by such a prestigious company as Bonatti confirms our ability to satisfy the most stringent criteria. The project also underscores the industry-wide acceptance of our PWHT solution for corrosion resistant alloys.”

Bead removal technology from EPI

EPI’s bead remover has been developed to remove bead on the top and bottom of the strip by milling at the same time. Under the strict and non- compromised customer’s inspection, the bead remover has shipped to Japan successfully with finishing floor equipment, inside bead flusher (IBF), end facing and bevelling M/C and bundling M/C for 5.5" ERW line. THE largest ERW pipe producer in Japan, Nisshine Kokan, has awarded EPI an order to supply a bead remover. The bead remover from EPI not only increases the yield but also decreases the damage of forming rolls. Top and bottom bead after the butt welding of strip is a burden on the production of an ERW line. The bead impacts on the stand and scratches forming rolls. To remove the bead after coil joining, the operator grinds the bead by manual skill or using a bead remover. Most bead removers operating on-site only remove the top of strip, not the bottom.

safety: the project has been realised in order to ensure the operators have easy access to all the various components, and granting at the same time their maximum safety. As an example, the mill is supplied with a special OD bead chopper, and dedicated fences with interlocks all over the mill. This is the second machine in this specific range already built by OTO; the first was made in 2009. Three other heavy duty tube mills in the range 8" to 16", mostly for API tubes, are to be manufactured and delivered before the end of 2013.

round, with a thickness range up to ½". Most of the material to be processed will be from J55 to X100 grade pipe, and the mill is able to reach speeds faster than 200fpm. The customer will use the mill to implement productivity and efficiency in order to satisfy recent important orders. The new concept design of the whole mill (highly automated entry line, special modular rapid tool change, high performance orbital cold saw cut-off) confirms OTO as a leading manufacturer of heavy thickness/ large diameter tube mills. Particular care has been addressed to

ITA terminates 30-year management contract

The president also advised INTRAS that the ITA would be appointing its own executive secretary, basing him in an office in Germany. These changes were accepted by INTRAS while the existing contract ran to its termination. However, during this time INTRAS became increasingly aware that the overall direction and philosophy of the ITA was changing. During the transfer of management to the ITA president and executive secre- tary in Germany, all membership data was forwarded to them upon request. At this time, INTRAS offered to continue to produce ITAN newsletters for the ITAand to supply subscriptions of INTRAS tube magazines Tube & Pipe Technology

Tube & Pipe Technology readers and many long-standing members of the International Tube Association (ITA) will know that INTRAS Ltd has been the management company for the association for over 30 years, since the ITA was founded by the late INTRAS chairman, Mr John C Hogg, in 1979. However, in February 2012 the current ITA president, Dr Gunther Voswinckel, wrote a letter to INTRAS serving notice to terminate the long-standing management contract, with effect from 30 September 2012. During the following months discussions took place between INTRAS and several ITA officers to try to implement a ‘replacement’ contract to restore the relationship.

With the previously used stationary process, casting took one or two days, as it had to pass through twelve different stations. Mr Rossi’s continuous casting process required only five stations and took just one hour to complete, with a material yield of over 90 per cent. Mr Rossi took his know-how to Europe and in 1954 founded Concast in Zurich, together with the later managing director Heinrich Tanner. As a pioneer in continuous casting technology in the western world – the Soviet Union had already developed continuous casters earlier – Concast was for a time the only supplier of plants of this kind. Mr Rossi died in 1990 at the age of 101. In this year, 455.17 million tons of steel were cast continuously, corresponding to 59.15 per cent of the world steel production.

higher productivity to be achieved. Irving Rossi, founder of the Swiss company Concast, launched the technology on the market. For his achievements, he has now been awarded a place in the Hall of Fame of the American trade journal American Metal Market . Mr Rossi was considered an astute businessman with a good instinct for technical innovations. 235 patents were registered in his name, some of which did not develop their potential until decades later. In 1949, Mr Rossi transferred the casting process from non-ferrous metals to steel for the first time. This required a great deal of courage and perseverance. For the first production plants in the USA, the entrepreneur guaranteed the steel quantity and quality, and the investments turned out to be profitable. The process enabled the American steel industry to achieve an immense boost in productivity.
