Jointing compound HELDITE sealant can prevent the leakage and seepage of water, steam, gases and oils where tubes and pipes are joined. It was formulated in 1918 to fulfil an increasing demand for a versatile and universal sealant in the established shipbuilding industry and embryonic aircraft industry. By 1922 Heldite had been approved by the various government departments responsible for quality control in the UK and throughout the commonwealth.

a joint, which can cause damage to interior working parts. Heldite is non-abrasive with inherent plasticity – its thermoplastic and adhesive factors combat the effects of vibration and temperature change, with a temperature range from -40ºC to +350ºC. It is inert and does not affect other materials, and is suitable in the assembly of dissimilar metals. It is also waterproof and anti-corrosive, and is completely unaffected by seawater. Heldite is made in the UK from sustainable raw materials.

the Spitfire. When the oil industry built pipelines to transport oil thousands of miles, across desserts, through forests, tundra and beneath oceans, Heldite became an important component due to its universal properties, and it is still used extensively worldwide. Heldite is universal, so there is no need to carry a selection of different products. It is suitable for flanged, screwed and compression joints, and will act as a locking agent during joint assembly. It can be used for joining pipework, tubes and rubber hoses with or without a gasket. Because it is a liquid jointing compound, unlike a silicone paste it will not squeeze out of/break off within

The real test for Heldite came in 1929 when it was used by Supermarine in Southampton to effectively seal the complex fuel, oil and water cooling systems of the Schneider Trophy winning S6B seaplane – forerunner to

Cross section measurement accelerates tensile tests

the label into the software by means of a barcode scanner. The tensile test can be started within seconds, without further input into the software. The reading and noting of measurements and the transfer of data from machine to machine by means of handwritten paper is now replaced by the cross section measuring unit. This makes the specimen preparation process quicker and more reliable. The main components of the unit – a high precision scale and a sophisticated length measuring system – are mounted in a stainless steel enclosure. The length measuring system consists of two moveable anvils that are guided precisely. The measuring force is provided by a spring. The position of the specimen is determined by supporting guides, and the touching points between the anvils and the tube ends are defined. A high precision magnetostrictive length sensor connected to the anvils measures the length, and a Doli EDC 220 controller collects the measured data and communicates with the PC. measurement of the tube. The function of the new testing unit is to determine the cross section area by weight, length and density of a tube specimen. The operator places the specimen into the unit and inputs its charge number into the PC. Shortly after, the scale confirms a successful weighing with a beep. The operator then moves a lever to measure the length of the tube. The cross section area computation will be needed later to calculate the current stress during the tensile test of the sample. All measured data can be checked on the PC screen. A barcode printer prints a label to be attached to the tube; the label contains all the data acquired as a barcode, and also in text form. The specimen can

DOLI, a manufacturer of controllers for material testers, has installed a semi- automatic cross section measuring unit in the testing laboratory of a large tube manufacturer in Germany. The measurement of tube specimens is now more productive than before. The manager of the lab assigned the project to Doli because of his positive experiences with Doli withmodernisation of his material testers. Virtually every minute test specimens of just-produced tubes undergo a tensile test in the testing laboratory. The task for Doli was to improve the cross section
