Measuring on the move WELDING engineering specialist Arc Energy Resources has invested in a Faro portable coordinate measuring arm (CMM), advancing the company’s inspection facilities for its weld overlay cladding and fabrication services. This enables the company to precisely measure the complex geometries often encountered in the valves, pumps, pipe work and fittings produced for the oil and gas, nuclear, renewable and related industries, even during the manufacturing process. Arc Energy’s FaroArm in action

recently made a major investment in two new rotating head welding machines, increasing productivity and extending the size and scope of work it can handle, which now includes complicated component geometries for the full or partial cladding and fabrication of a wide range of component sizes weighing up to 15 tonnes. The company’s in-house designed cladding workstations feature state-of- the-art control systems developed to suit its customers’ specialised engineering requirements, and can clad bores up to 4m diameter and areas of restricted access within bores as small as 20mm diameter. Arc Energy also offers in-house test weld, heat treatment, PMI and NDT facilities. Industry certifications include ISO 9001:2008 quality management. Energy to date being over 6m long. Arc Energy Resources is now able to produce full 3D ‘as built’ models of finished components, providing quality assurance data for clients. Reports can be tailored to customer requirements on dimensional accuracy, for components of unlimited size, without the need for the items to leave the company’s workshops in Gloucestershire, UK. Arc Energy Resources’ expertise provides protection against corrosion and wear for a variety of process and pipeline equipment for use in any hostile environment. The company also

The investment supplements Arc Energy’s ability to handle difficult-to- weld items for fabrication or cladding of a huge range of component sizes, and confirms for customers the quality of the process and of the finished components. The advanced software provides powerful features enabling a full range of geometrical and form tolerances to be verified. The device is also capable of being moved during use to give an unlimited range of measurement, the largest component measured at Arc

Laser gauges LASER measurement of product diameter has always been highly accurate. However, in non-thermally controlled environments, such as a workshop or on-line, there is a chance of incorrect readings due to thermal expansion. Small fluctuations in the ambient temperature can affect both the laser gauge and the part, and therefore the measurement. In order to address this problem, Scantron Industrial Products has introduced NO-VAR (no variation) technology. The thermal co-efficient of the gauge and the part are determined and then stored in the instrument’s memory. Sensors installed in the gauge then measure the ambient temperature, and smart software compensates for temperature changes and adjusts the reading accordingly. With high precision manufacturing requiring very tight tolerances, gauge repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) to a tenth of the tolerances or better is a requirement when demonstrating process capability. A 10mm diameter steel part will change by in excess of a tenth of a micron per degree change in temperature of the part (thermal expansion coefficient of steel is ~12 microns per metre per degree C). The 40mm high speed Xactum gauge offers R&R of ±0.1 microns (±3σ over 1 second) and, with a resolution of 10 nanometres, can accurately measure changes in diameter of this order.
