We take great pride in being ‘here to serve the industries we helped to shape’. Good news, bad news, celebrations, corporate mergers, the latest technological developments all feature in our magazine, which caters to the needs of the industry in general, and our readers and advertisers. The challenges remain, as with every business, in a fast-paced and ever-changing world, but we stand by our message in serving industries that are at the forefront of development and growth worldwide. There is a brief history of our company, starting on page 84. It is fitting that we celebrate this anniversary in the year of the staging of wire and Tube Düsseldorf. Our founder, John Hogg, played an instrumental role in setting up international wire and cable shows, including the founding of ‘wire’ – the leading international wire and cable exhibition, now organised by Messe Düsseldorf, and to which most of our readers and advertisers will be heading in a few short weeks. More than 1,400 wire exhibitors will occupy The Fairgrounds site on the side of the River Rhine from 15 to 19 April for the week-long exhibition, which attracts thousands of visitors from all corners of the world. It is a coming together of old friends, the meeting of new ones and all related to the wire and cable industries. New advancements in technology, ideas and changes will all be the centre of attention as companies announce new products and launches.

At Stand G27 in Hall 6 at Tube Düsseldorf, visitors will be able to discover the tube and wire bending technologies offered across the Unison and Pneuform machine tool ranges. One of Unison’s manually operated, CNC controlled EvBend machines will be on display. Developed for low-volume precision tube bending, EvBend models are used across the aerospace, MRO, motorsport and oil and gas industries. “We are incredibly pleased to be showcasing machines from all three Unison machine tool companies at MACH 2024, and to be presenting technologies from Unison and Pneuform at Tube Düsseldorf,” commented Unison Ltd’s joint managing director Alan Pickering. “With our world-class, British-built Unison tube bending machines, Nukon’s highly accessible premium-quality fibre laser machines, and our recent acquisition of Pneuform, we now offer what I believe is the most comprehensive choice of quality machine tool technologies

The Unison family of companies consists of all-electric tube manipulation specialist Unison Ltd; Nukon Lasers UK; and wire bending machinery manufacturer Pneuform Machines Ltd. MACH 2024, being staged in April in Birmingham, UK, will provide the first opportunity for the three companies’ respective technologies to be presented side by side since Pneuform was acquired by Unison Ltd in 2023. At the same time, at Tube Düsseldorf in Germany, the tube and wire bending capabilities of Unison and Pneuform machines will be showcased together. On show and operational at Stand 550 in Hall 20 at MACH 2024 will be an all electric Unison Breeze Twinhead tube bending machine; a Unison Synergy hybrid dual-stack tube bender; and a Pneuform 3D wire bending machine. A powerful European-built Nukon Rex 6kW flat sheet metal fibre laser machine will also be on display.

and our customers for their support,” said managing director Steve Mepsted. “Working closely with manufacturers to improve productivity, save resources and reduce costs has been a priority for the last four decades. We will continue to develop and deliver innovative cold welding solutions as the industry evolves.” Ongoing research and development enables PWM to meet manufacturers’ changing needs. The company introduced air/hydraulic cold welders on trolleys in the 1980s and 1990s. These user-friendly and energy-efficient mobile machines can be easily moved to the work area, saving effort and reducing downtime. The 1990s also saw a requirement for more powerful machines to weld large diameter rod. PWM says that its P1500 model, for non-ferrous material up to 30mm, was the first hydraulically powered, electronically controlled,

British company PWM, which manu- factures and supplies high-performance cold pressure welding machines and dies, celebrates 40 years of service to the global wire and cable industry in 2024. The company’s original 1984 portfolio featured a handheld cold welder for fine wire, a larger machine for medium wire and a pneumatically powered rod welder. Today, PWM produces a comprehensive range of manual and powered machines for a variety of applications. Cold welding dies are individually hand-made in matched sets, in standard or custom sizes to suit round or profile wire. As a specialist manufacturer, PWM designs and builds its cold welding equipment in-house to stringent quality standards. “We are proud to celebrate this milestone in the company’s history and I would like to thank the PWM team

WMC recognised with Planet Mark recertification Wrexham Mineral Cables (WMC), a manufacturer of fire survival mineral insulated copper cables (MICC), has been re-awarded the prestigious Planet Mark certification for its commitment to sustainable best practice throughout its operations. product from WMC, companies will benefit from the quality of its products and services as well as contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

“Our Planet Mark journey began a few years ago when we first achieved the certification,” said Colin Hughes, group manager at WMC. “Since then, our commitment to creating a better future for our planet has only grown stronger. Furthermore, an achievement like this is a testament to the unwavering efforts of our entire team and the positive impact we have made on the environment.” In the last 18 months, WMC’s efforts in the area of sustainability have been recognised by industry awards including finalist in the Made in Wales Award (sustainable/ethical manufacturer of the year), and the Make UK Manufacturing Awards for the Wales region (energy and sustainability category). It was also a finalist at the Materials Recycling World (MRW) and National Recycling Awards (circular economy initiative – business model and recycling excellence). Planet Mark is a sustainability certi- fication that recognises businesses that are taking positive action to reduce their environmental impact. To achieve certification, companies must measure their carbon footprint, set ambitious reduction targets and implement a comprehensive sustainability plan. WMC was re-certified by Planet Mark alongside its sister company Tamlite Lighting, an independent lighting manufacturer. Certification to Planet Mark required WMC to demonstrate evidence of its commitment to sustainability across a number of parameters. The company presented details of its efforts, progress to date and the initiatives it has put in place to reduce its environmental impact. These include investments in energy-efficient technologies; waste reduction measures; materials recycling; and the use of sustainable materials.

WMC’s MICC cable combines copper and magnesium oxide

WMC’s MICC cable combines just two elements – copper and magnesium oxide (MgO). Copper is an almost 100 per cent recyclable material and can be used repeatedly, while MgO is a natural element of great abundance. The use of pure raw materials makes the cables suitable for most environments, as they will not deteriorate or age. WMC states that this also reduces onward maintenance and replacement to practically zero. Planet Mark certification can also offer buyer confidence. By specification of

Employing technology to seize growth opportunities

The MTA, which organises the MACH event on behalf of the engineering based manufacturing industry, has been campaigning for greater adoption of new technology for some time. It will expand upon this at MACH 2024, which opens at the NEC in Birmingham, UK, on 15 April. A series of new Knowledge Hubs will focus on educating manufacturers in when and how to adopt new technologies. The hubs, which will have dedicated stands within the various exhibition zones, will each focus on a particular type of technology: automation and robotics; data and artificial intelligence; energy efficiency; additive manufacturing; and tooling. Each hub is being managed by one of the specialist centres from the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, such as the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). The Catapult network collaborates with thousands of businesses across a wide range of

Reversing UK manufacturing’s poor record for adopting new technology will be tackled at MACH 2024. The Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) aims to promote growth by using the event to launch its new Knowledge Hubs initiative. The programme will showcase the latest technology to exhibitors, helping manufacturers learn more about the potential offered by such technology, as well as when to adopt it and how to implement it to best effect. The initiative has been given a major boost with the announcement by UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt of £4.5bn of funding to support advanced manufacturing. This funding will directly benefit several of the exhibition’s key themes, especially energy efficiency, where £960mn has been earmarked for clean energy manufacturing through a Green Industries Growth Accelerator.

One-year MBO anniversary draws to £17.9mn close

of exotic alloys in just three weeks.

Export successes, security of supply and making every member of the business a shareholder have been just some of the highlights of a record-breaking year for Alloy Wire International (AWI). The UK-based manufacturer of round, flat and profile wire has delivered £17.9mn of sales since a management buy-out (MBO) twelve months ago – a near £5mn rise on the same period in 2022 and £3mn above anticipated revenues. The senior management team of managing director Tom Mander, finance director Adam Shaw and technical director Andrew Du Plessis have put the expansion down to a resurgence in oil and gas and aerospace volumes returning since the pandemic, plus ongoing growth in automotive and new opportunities in R&D and space exploration. They have also underlined the growing importance of AWI’s commitment to a 400-tonne stockholding in material and its ability to supply a 60-strong range

“The last year has surpassed all of our expectations and capped a tremendous twelve months since we completed the MBO,” explained Mr Mander, who has worked in the business since July 2005. “One of the first things we wanted to do when we took over was extend the employee ownership model to every member of staff, meaning all of our 33-strong workforce at the time became shareholders in the business. “This really set the scene and ensured everyone knew we wanted to take them on the journey with us, and they have responded by producing a record year of £17.9mn sales.” Mr Mander continued, “There has been strong domestic growth, but that has been outstripped by demand from overseas, with AWI material now sent to

more than 65 different countries – often beating off competition from low-cost rivals.” Alloy Wire International manufactures round, flat and profile wire in 60 exotic alloys, such as Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, Nimonic and Waspaloy. It supplies 6,000 customers across 15 different market sectors. A £1mn investment drive will be completed this year to strengthen its market position, with the installation of new wet drawing and single-hole dry drawing machines, as well as an annealing line spooler. Long-term power purchase agreement for renewable energy Borealis, a provider of advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions and a European supplier of base chemicals, has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Alpiq, a Swiss energy services provider and electricity producer, to source renewable electricity from the Finnish wind farm Merkkikallio, owned by Renewable Power Capital. Beginning this year, Alpiq will supply around 90 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year of renewable energy to power Borealis’s production facilities in Porvoo, Finland, over the course of nine years. This significant partnership takes both Borealis and Alpiq closer to achieving their climate neutrality goals. With the long-term PPA in place, both companies take a substantial step forward in the transition to cleaner energy. The new PPA also makes a contribution to the Finnish chemical sector’s aspirations to attain carbon neutrality by 2045. Borealis’s goal is to secure 100 per cent of its electricity consumption from renewable sources for its polyolefins and base chemicals divisions by boosting the proportion of renewable power used in its Finnish production facilities. Furthermore, through the PPA with Alpiq, the renewable electricity produced will lead to a reduction of Scope 2 emissions.

“With the signing of this agreement, Borealis takes a significant step toward realising its ambitious energy and climate goals, demonstrating its commitment to advancing the energy transition,” said Wolfram Krenn, Borealis executive vice president base chemicals and operations. “This partnership holds special significance, as it propels Borealis beyond the pivotal threshold of sourcing over 50 per cent of our electricity from renewable sources for our operations in Porvoo.” Borealis AG www.borealisgroup.com Alpiq www.alpiq.com
