EDITORIAL INDEX

Inside you will discover a full list of exhibitors and their stand numbers to help guide you around the vast exhibition (see page 120). We also have in-depth information on many of the innovative new products that are being exhibited, in our Düsseldorf Exhibitor Section, which starts on page 138. The magazine is a media partner of the show and is being distributed in several key locations. We will be in the main entrance hall (EN03) and I will be based in Hall 4, Stand B27. Do come and pick up some extra copies or to say hello and rest your weary feet. The event never fails to impress me with its outstanding levels of organisation. Nothing else offers such a multitude of international networking opportunities. With well in excess of 1,000 exhibiting companies, Tube once again broke its exhibitor record in 2014 (and has grown eight- fold since the first show in 1988). I fully expect 2016 to be equally spectacular.

and coil processing equipment. Its business was initially based on second-hand equipment sales but soon expanded into servicing, repair and the overhaul of machinery and lines sold in order to guarantee customers a complete and reliable experience. The implementation of a full technical department followed this, which was allowed to develop new machinery and to adapt and improve second-hand lines in order to offer a more high quality product at a competitive price. The results achieved by the company during recent years confirm that the choice, made just a few years ago, to focus its activity on engineering and manufacturing of brand-new equipment, instead of overhauling and servicing second-hand lines, was a successful and important step. With expert know-how and a clear orientation towards the international market, Adda Fer Meccanica has supplied several production plants around the world, increasing the popularity of the brand, which is now synonymous with quality and reliability. Movable dies are combined to form a continuous tool surface and work like a huge roll or moving press machine. This unique concept makes the forming process very gentle and stable, resulting in good adaptability to a wide range of product sizes and material properties, excellent surface quality and lower work hardening level in the material. Metalube recognised for sustainable business practices

As a business, we’re committed to reducing our impact on the environ- ment and having an Environmental Management System in place is not only helping us to do this, it’s also allowing us to make continuous improvements to our systems and procedures. And improving our performance doesn’t just benefit us, it benefits our customers too.” Metalube manufactures a range of non-ferrous drawing oils and maintenance lubricants as well as a variety of corrosion protection and forming oils. It has offices in China, India and Brazil.

LUBRICANTS manufacturer Metalube has been recognised for its commitment to sustainable business practices and awarded the ISO 14001 certification. Over 14,000 organisations are certified in the UK alone and over 250,000 certificates issued globally. ISO 14001 is the principal management system standard, and specifies the requirements for the formulation and maintenance of an EMS. This helps to control environmental aspects, reduce impacts and ensure legal compliance. Chris Nettleship, technical director at Metalube, said: “We’re extremely proud to have achieved certification. ─ including hundreds of new products and technologies ─ and had one-on-one exchanges with exhibitors and industry leaders. Energy projects have involved clients supplying free issue materials, but recent trends indicate an increasing requirement to source and supply material,” said Mr Robinson. “Our clients are seeking to maximise production and offload risk. Many customers are keen for us to get involved in full turnkey supply packages and these projects fit nicely within our strategic plan to grow this aspect of the business.” Since his appointment to the board of directors in 2013 Mr Robinson has worked with Cranfield University to develop Arc Energy’s five-year business plan. “This period was particularly exciting, mixing with other leaders from a wide range of business sectors and talking about how we could drive our business forward. The thrust of the plan is growth,” explained Mr Robinson. “We are targeting 15 per cent year- on-year growth, expanding both our cladding and fabrication facilities, while also seeking inroads into new markets.” As part of this plan, the company is building an additional 500m 2 of workshop space on its site in the UK to house additional cladding stations and is taking on extra welders to support this expansion.

finance director, are still involved as directors in the running of the UK-based engineering company. Its highly trained welding teams provide fabrication and weld overlay cladding services to the oil and gas, defence and water treatment industries. Mr Robinson started working for the company in 2008 and an opportunity was identified to benefit from his economics background to develop a purchasing department, an area in which Arc Energy was deficient. Mr Robinson said: “Many technical products were dictated by commodity markets and we were buying them at spot prices, which I felt could be improved.” The introduction turned out to be an outstanding success, with cost reductions of up to 25 per cent on key spends such as welding consumables and industrial gas, and a halving of stock days within the first two years. He went on to develop Arc Energy’s environmental management system and won accreditation to the international standard ISO 14001 in 2010. He then set his sights on the company’s shop floor scheduling system. “It was time well spent as it enabled me to experience all aspects of the business,” he said. He has a growing interest in full supply projects where Arc Energy is involved in buying materials and ancillary components, which exercises his purchasing background. “Most Arc

Automated tube bending cell doubles output A UK-based wheelbarrow manufacturer has installed a second custom-designed automated production cell from Unison to help meet demand for its ‘barrow in a box’ product. the company to increase manufacturing throughput from 1,800 to 3,500 wheelbarrows per day.

volume production and freed up skilled staff for future product development. The success of our barrow in a box range is due in no small part to the manufacturing flexibility that the cell introduced. Increasing demand meant that we needed to expand capacity even further, so in 2014 we invested in a six-robot press line for wheelbarrow pans, followed about six months later by this second Unison cell for frame manufacturing.” Launched in 2012, the barrow in a box line of products are supplied in flat-pack form for easy transportation. The concept has proved popular with both retailers and customers, and the company recently sought to further increase manufacturing capacity with another production line, to keep up with demand. The new production cell comprises a tube bundle loader, tube orientation station, intermediate dual-arm loader, bending machine and a five-axis articulated robotic handler. All five stages are controlled by a central PC. The tube bender is based on a customised 30mm (1.25") single-stack all-electric model from Unison’s Breeze range. It features a long, narrow neck and bend head that is specifically designed to facilitate precision fabrication of the tight wheel-end bend of wheelbarrow frames, without causing the tube to collide with machine architecture during the process. Once the bundle loader’s hopper has been filled and the operating program has been selected, the production cell operates entirely automatically. The bundle loader feeds tubes individually to the tubeorientationstation, whichdetects the weld seam and rotates the tube to the optimum position for bending. The tube is then transferred to the bending machine by the intermediate loader, and after being bent to shape is removed by the robotic handler and placed in a multiple rack storage scheme, ready for hole punching and powder coating. This latest Unison cell forms an integral part of a new production line that is primarily designed to manufacture frames for Walsall Wheelbarrow’s barrow in a box products. However, the cell is programmable and can also be configured for a variety of tube bending tasks to help handle peak production of other products.

Jonathan Thacker, operations director at The Walsall Wheelbarrow Company, commented, “Our first Unison production cell was the catalyst for production expansion. It enabled us to re-engineer our manufacturing operations for high-

Brazilian trade fairs confirm positions in South American market

trade fairs primarily came from the oil and gas, automotive, construction industries, metal construction and mining. Innovative trends and technologies from the fields of pipe and tube making, finishing and processing as well as pipe and tube trade were centre stage at TUBOTECH. Since its debut in 2001 the tube trade fair has developed into a top event for experts from the tube sector in Latin America. Just under 500 exhibitors from 15 nations introduced their innovations in 2015. TUBOTECH and wire South America will again be held concurrently, from 3 to 5 October 2017 at the São Paulo Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. Messe Düsseldorf GmbH – Germany Email: info@messe-duesseldorf.de Website: www.messe-duesseldorf.de

THE international trade fairsTUBOTECH and wire South America were held jointly at the São Paulo Expo Exhibition & Convention Center in Brazil late last year. TUBOTECH, a trade fair for tubes, valves, pumps, fittings and components, took place for the eighth time, while the second wire South America confirmed the trade fair concept after a successful premiere in 2013. Although Brazil’s economic growth has slowed down, and despite the negative growth expected for 2016, the products of the wire, cable and tube industries are of the same importance for Brazilian industry. This is especially true for the construction and automotive industries, as well as for household electronics in general. “The Brazilian market continues to be highly attractive for our exhibitors,” said Erhard Wienkamp, division director at Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. “Even in

tense economic times it is important to fly your flag, make contacts, strengthen partnerships and to prepare business deals. We rely on the Brazilian market and will do our utmost to develop wire South America further, turning it into an established name in South America.” Together wire South America and TUBOTECH occupied 32,000m 2 of gross exhibition space, with approximately 500 exhibitors. The 11,000 international trade visitors attending the three-day

Contract for two 500-tonne under-rollers SPARROWS Group, and its cable and pipe-lay solutions (CPLS) division, reinforced its footprint in the USA after being awarded a contract byOceaneering International, Inc, a global provider of engineered services and products to the offshore oil and gas industry, to design and manufacture two 500-tonne powered and jack-able under-rollers.

Group in that not only are the under- rollers believed to be the first of the design and capacity in the marketplace but it underlines the added value we bring through our integrated services, responsiveness and after-care support.” The complete under-roller unit, when attached to a set of cradles, can be lifted via four lifting points. With packing structures for differing reel diameters the system can be used for different reel cradles. This enables the unit to be versatile in terms of the reel dimensions it can be used with. Both the drive and idler units can be moved to the location of the reel and cradles. The units can then be fastened to the cradles and, with the use of hydraulic cylinders, the idler wheels can push against and under the reel, effectively lifting the reel off the cradle. Sparrows Group – UK Website: www.sparrowsgroup.com Oceaneering International, Inc – USA Website: www.oceaneering.com

The new under-roller system, through its versatility and mobility, offers a wide range of benefits. Suitable for use with reels of up to 11.4m outer diameter, it provides up to 10 tonnes of line pull at the outer reel diameter, which is particularly beneficial for steel-tubed umbilicals – a more rigid product that requires greater effort to spool around the reel. Key to Sparrows Group securing the contract was the company’s in-house engineering expertise and facilities in Aberdeen, UK, where the under-rollers are to be designed and manufactured before undergoing testing. The under-rollers will then be delivered to Oceaneering in Panama City, Florida,

USA, where Sparrows Group will perform the assembly and site acceptance testing. Local after-care support for the under-rollers will be supplied by Sparrows Group’s service centre in Slidell, Louisiana, where the company has a number of specialist technicians with the capability to maintain and repair this type of equipment. Sparrows Group CEO Stewart Mitchell commented, “This contract award marks a significant milestone for Sparrows
