Contirod plants produce copper wire rod in a fully integrated casting and rolling process

SMS commissioned to supply 11 copper wire rod plants to China

The overhauled cooling section features two separate media circuits and provides the basis for the wire rod surface quality. In the first phase, the wire rod is deoxidised by treating it with a water alcohol mixture. It is then cooled down further with water. A large number of sensors and control elements work in conjunction with specially developed software to ensure process reliability and reproducible quality. Commissioning of the new facilities is scheduled for 2022 to 2024. SMS group GmbH www.sms-group.com

since 2009. The new orders underline the customer’s confidence in the technology. With an additional 11 Contirod plants, Amer expects to be well positioned in a growth market. Contirod (a registered trademark of Aurubis Belgium) is a manufacturing process for cast wire rod that utilises a Hazelett twin-belt casting machine. The near-horizontal casting method can physically preclude porosity in the casting bar’s core. The Contirod rolling mill with individual drives shapes the casting bar into fine grained copper wire rod.

The Amer International Group, based in Shenzhen, China, has placed an order with SMS group for 11 Contirod® copper wire rod plants. The new plants will produce 8mm copper wire rod to be used in the production of a range of different electrical conductors – particularly required in the Chinese market for the expansion of wind power and energy networks. By expanding its production capacities, Amer Group aims to meet the increase in demand for high-quality copper wire rod. Four Contirod plants have already been put into operation by the Amer Group

75 years of Eder-Austria Eder Engineering-Austria is celebrating its 75 th anniversary as a pioneer in supplying the international wire and cable industry with new products and technologies. Siegfried Eder, who worked as a key technical manager of a large wire and cable manufacturing plant in Vienna, Austria, founded Eder Engineering in January 1947. The company started out with the production of tungsten carbide drawing die tools, later including natural diamond, then began also designing and making die processing equipment. In the years following the end of World War II, all of these products were widely needed, and considerable expansion in both production scope and exports abroad took place, beginning with neighbouring countries such as Germany, Hungary and Yugoslavia. The production scope at the time was around 80 per cent die tools, 15 per cent machines and 5 per cent technical assistance. Dr Kurt Eder – the founder’s son and now CEO of the company – in the late 1960s produced the first Compax/PCD drawing die tools, and a specifically designed new line of more powerful equipment. Soon after, Eder-Austria shifted its portfolio tomainly making advanced die-tool working machines and software. With an export quota of around 98 per cent, Eder Engineering now supplies regular customers in more than 80 countries, offering semi- and fully automatic concepts for the production and/or reconditioning of ultra-hard precision die tools made from tungsten carbide, natural diamond and synthetic PCD.

Siegfried Eder in 1952

Dr Kurt Eder, CEO

The regular reconditioning of drawing dies is essential to the production of consistent high-quality wire. Tens of thousands of costly diamond/PCD die tools are in permanent use in wire drawingmills and cable plants, particularly inmulti-wire drawing operations. A high degree of machine automation helps to lower the cost of die repair, making all operations easily performed and limiting the intervention of human personnel. Dr Eder says that his insistence on innovation has kept the company at the forefront: “The requirements of the wire and cable industry worldwide keep changing and it is crucial for us to reinvent the wheel all the time.” The next generation of the Eder family is standing by to continue serving the international wire and cable industry with advanced die-tool processing equipment. Largest hydrogen-based DRI facility in China Sinosteel Engineering & Technology, located in Beijing, China, has contracted Tenova for the design and supply of a hydrogen based Energiron direct reduction (DR) plant. The plant will be installed at Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel in the Zhanjiang Economic and Technological Zone, Guangdong Province, and its capacity of 1mn ton/year will make it the largest hydrogen-based DRI (direct reduction iron) facility in China. As global efforts to lower carbon emissions continue, the replacement of traditional blast furnace steelmaking tech- nologies – often characterised by the intensive use of coal – is currently the new trend for a sustainable steel industry, and the use of gas-based ironmaking technologies is an alternative. Energiron, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, is a flexible DR technology for virgin metallic unit production in terms of make-up gases utilisation, and is already designed to maximise the reduction of CO 2 emissions. The new Energiron plant will mainly use hydrogen as a reducing gas, with the possibility to mix it with natural gas (NG) and coke oven gas (COG). The plant has the flexibility to use different reducing gases in any combination or proportion, using the same Energiron ZR scheme. It will also be designed to have the capability to capture and sell CO 2 on the commercial market, further reducing the overall plant emissions and providing an additional revenue stream.

The new plant will primarily use hydrogen as a reducing gas

The plant will produce cold DRI pellets through an external cooler for potential future hot DRI production and transport (using the Hytemp system) to a new EAF mill to be located next to the Energiron plant. “This is the first direct reduction iron production line integrating hydrogen, natural gas and coke oven gas for industrial production,” said Stefano Maggiolino, president and CEO at Tenova HYL. “Thanks to our technology, Baowu group can proceed towards the path of reducing carbon emission and reaching carbon neutrality in 2050, and Tenova is very proud to be part of this journey.” Tenova www.tenova.com

Optimising power cables on the route to zero carbon emissions Delta Tecnic is a supplier of technology for optimising power cable colouring. The company collaborates with major players on the development of renewable energies, the electric car and the increasingly important medium- and low-voltage grids in built-up areas, through a complete range of masterbatches. Cables for power transmission are generally designed to withstand specific conditions in electrical distribution and must therefore meet high quality, safety and performance specifications. The growth of markets such as electric vehicles, robotics, automation, solar panels and wind power installations has led to an increase in demand for medium- and low-voltage cables. This demand will increase due to the targets set for CO 2 emission reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. Delta Tecnic produces colour masterbatches and additives that are used to colour all of these electrical cables, using a series of pigments that are selected and tested to ensure they do not affect the cables’ dielectric properties. By carefully selecting these raw materials, Delta Tecnic is able to offer colour uniformity and high production speed to companies that produce power cables, owing to the regularity in the colour grain size, and eliminating possible problems during dosing in the latest extruders on the market, which are becoming faster and shorter. In the pursuit of zero carbon emissions, renewable energies are on their way to replacing polluting energies. In 2021 the share of renewables reached a record high of nearly 47 per cent, while coal accounted for less than 2 per cent, according to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), as wind and solar PV installed capacity increased. This is a trend that will continue in the coming years. Delta Tecnic demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and environmental improvement through its colour solutions and additives with UV filters, used in cables for the renewable energy industry, considering the protection against degradation of polymers exposed to the sun and the consequent long-term discolouration in outdoor conditions. The pigments used in their formulations meet high values for light fastness and external conditions such as temperature and humidity (weathering). For halogen-free cables used by the industry since the intro- duction of CPR regulations in construction, the company has a micro bead masterbatch range based on polyethylene (PE) and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) that has the capacity to improve dilution in plastic compounds, owing to its spherical shape and reduced size – characteristics that improve colour uniformity compared to traditional standard-sized granules. Delta Tecnic provides colouring for charging cables that connect vehicles to charging stations at street level, or for community or private installations of power cables to correctly charge cars in car parks. Developments in this sector will require an increase in the capacity of the medium- and low-voltage power grids in cities, given the increased energy consumption that the cables will have to support. This will have an impact on the distribution of building wire. Existing infrastructures are half a century old in Europe and the USA. The construction industry faces a major renovation and

refurbishment cycle in which there will be room for modern electrical installations. Delta Tecnic collaborates with companies that need masterbatches for power cables inside buildings, and offers product ranges with different polymers (PE, EVA, PA, etc) to meet demanding requirements. Technology News Quality control in automotive extrusion lines

For more than four decades, manufactur- ers in automotive cable lines worldwide have used Sikora’s measuring devices to ensure the quality and dimensional accuracy of the core while reducing material consumption to a minimum. Sikora offers two models of the Center view 8000 for different cable dimensions. The Centerview 8010 is mainly suitable for the measurement of small coaxial, data or automotive cables with a diameter from 0.25 to 10mm (0.01" to 0.39"). Optionally – for micro coaxial cables, for example – the system is available for diameters from 0.1mm (0.004"). The Centerview 8025 measures larger products with diameters from 0.5 to 25mm (0.02" to 1"), such as thick battery cables, which are increasingly installed in electric cars. The Centerview 8000 is flexible in terms of its position in the production line. As an alternative to the classic cold measurement at the end of the line, the gauge head can be installed directly after the extruder, and before the cooling section. This allows fast measurement and control for production efficiency with high quality demands. The system combines optical and inductive measuring methods. The inductive measuring circuit measures the exact position of the conductor, while the optical system measures the outer position of the core. The optical part is based on the principle of diffraction analysis combined with pulse-driven laser diodes, which project an image of the cable on the respective CCD line in each measuring axis. Two optical systems measure the position and width of the shadows over four axes at eight points. From the position of the shadows in relation to the inductively measured position of the conductor, the eccentricity is calculated within microseconds directly in the gauge head. From the width of the four shadows, the optical systems also precisely determine the respective outer diameters and ovality. circuit automatically positions the gauge head so that the conductor always passes through the centre of the gauge head, where the measuring accuracy is highest. The system also independently detects The inductive measuring

measurement on the Ecocontrol. The scatter plot, which consists of a total of 5,000 points, graphically shows the distribution of short-term fluctuations in eccentricity. Each point corresponds to a single value of the eccentricity with respect to magnitude and direction. The extent of the scatter plot characterises the standard deviation of the eccentricity. This visualisation enables the operator to recognise which eccentricity values persist even after optimal centring, and which fluctuation range is present. The Centerview 8000 can be combined with the hot/cold control module of the Ecocontrol 6000 or 1000. The module continuously calculates the material shrinkage and automatically takes it into account when controlling the diameter. Sikora AG www.sikora.net

and automatically compensates for slanted positions of the conductor. This eliminates the need for guide rollers, manual pre-setting or readjustment of the system. The Centerview 8000 is available with an integrated 7" TFT touchscreen monitor on which the production data is displayed. Alternatively, the system can be connected to a Sikora Ecocontrol processor system via common interfaces. By means of a sectional view of the core, the operator receives a standard display of the eccentricity, enabling the crosshead to be centred. The low exposure time of 0.25μs allows the Centerview 8000 to capture oscillat- ing eccentricity values with a high single value accuracy. These are displayed in the form of a scatter plot, which is an alternative display mode of the ongoing

Set up to save energy Rosendahl Nextrom is recommending that power cable producers looking to improve energy efficiency should take a closer look at polypropylene. The company has put the thermoplastic material to the test and developed a whole manufacturing concept for it. One of the main assets of polypropylene (PP) is that it can be fully recycled, but it has further advantages when looking at the whole product cycle and manufacturing process. Producing the PP raw material consumes around ten per cent less energy compared to polyethylene (PE), which is traditionally used for power cable production. Using PP instead of XLPE also simplifies the line setup. The complex process of crosslinking is eliminated, leading to energy reduction and a more compact line layout. PP allows manufacturers to dispense with the energy-intensive degassing at the end of the manufacturing process, which also results in shorter lead times. The R&D unit of Rosendahl Nextrom worked with HV Cable Solutions Ltd to investigate and test polypropylene-based compounds (PPC) in comparison with the established XLPE insulation material in medium-voltage cables. A large volume of test cables was produced using Rosendahl’s RM-A line under real manufacturing conditions. The positive results verified the properties of PPC: electrical behaviour equal to or better than XLPE; reduced scrap rates; reduced operating costs; and typically lower insulation system costs.

RoSET equipment from Rosendahl Nextrom

Rosendahl’s Superior Extrusion Technology (RoSET) is an all-in one setup for MV power cables up to 30kV. It combines the above advantages while also saving energy. The system provides not only a triple-layer insulation line, but also intensive process and material know-how and a PPC starter package. RoSET will be featured on Rosendahl Nextrom’s stand at wire 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Rosendahl Nextrom GmbH www.rosendahlnextrom.com
