East meets west at TEL

East meets west as Istanbul, Europe’s largest city, plays host to TEL at the end of February. Historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul is the most populous city in Turkey and the country’s economic, cultural and historic centre. The city itself straddles the Bosporus strait, which separates Europe and Asia, and exhibitors and visitors alike from both continents are expected to head to the city’s Expo Center for the three-day event, which runs from 28 th February to 2 nd March. Our coverage of the event starts on page 40 and you can collect your free copy of Wire & Cable ASIA and sister publication EuroWire from our stand. If any numbers were needed to back up the importance of the industry in both regions, it is news that more than 45,000 visitors attended the recent wire and Tube China in Shanghai, China. Turn to page 6 for more details. Buyers from 91 countries – an increase of nearly seven per cent from two years ago – attended the four-day exhibition, and there was strong approval from two UK companies attending – Alloy Wire International (see page 9) and Cimteq (see page 11).

It was the first time Alloy Wire had attended the event, and staff returned home after having completed more than 140 meetings during their debut show.

Alloy Wire’s successful wire China debut

ALLOY Wire International’s debut at wire China 2018 was hailed a major success after the company conducted more than 140 meetings with new customers on its exhibition stand. Managing director Mark Venables and sales director Angus Hogarth were joined by four members of the Shanghai sales team and it was a real joint effort as interest in the company’s ‘high performance’ nickel alloys was huge. The value of having native speakers on hand was evident as the majority of the thousands of visitors spoke in Chinese, with 50 per cent of the company’s Far East customers taking the time out to visit AWI during the four days. “We have been growing in this territory for a while now and felt it was the right time to put a marker in the sand by taking a sizeable presence at wire China,” explained Mr Hogarth. “This represented a significant investment, but it was one well worth making after being inundated by existing and new customers, all interested to find out more about our 200 tonnes of stock, the 60 nickel alloys in our range and our unrivalled three-week delivery lead times.” He continued: “A lot of feedback centred around how great it was to see us in China and the fact that they all equate Alloy Wire with ‘quality’ and ‘reliability’.

“And these messages were not just from clients, but also from suppliers of machinery and equipment who are all keen to be associated with us. “Demand was so high for AWI’s technical literature that we had all but run out by the end of the first day so had to go back to Shanghai for emergency supplies.” ❍ Members of the Alloy Wire team on the stand at wire China

New superconducting cable sets records for power transmission

progress to overcome technological barriers for a complete engineering of power transmission superconductive cables. Criteria usually adopted by Terna for the use of innovative cables are based on four pillars: technological aspects, environmental criteria, resiliency and grid integration. Part of them have been investigated and addressed in the Best Paths project.” Jean-Yves Astic, R&D programme manager, Réseau de Transport d’Électricité, said: “To get TSOs on board for investing in superconducting links, we would need customised use cases, ranging from 63 to 320 kV, including details on the exact costs, practical system operation as well as long-term maintenance.” Nexans – France Website : www.nexans.com Columbus Superconductors – Italy Website : www.columbussuperconductors.com

“At Columbus we are committed to increase the performance of these wires and we work on making them mechanically robust, reproducible and low cost. Thanks to projects like Best Paths, the transition from demonstrators to products in the energy sector will be faster and targeted to customers’ needs.” Several transmission system operators (TSOs) have been involved in the project. As future customers, they articulated their vision on future grids in a panel discussion. Massimo Rebolini, representative of Terna and chairman of CIGRE Italian National Committee, said: “Terna has always been interested in R&D activities on superconductive cables with the first experiences dated back to the nineties. “According to the strategies of sustainable development, we have continuously monitored research

MAJOR wire manufacturers, including Nexans and Columbus Superconductors, together with transmission system operators such as Terna and Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE), have disclosed the results of ground-breaking research on a superconducting cable system. The technological solutions for superconducting wires are setting new records. They are able to carry 500 times more electricity than copper wires and can transport up to 3.2 GW of electric power. The experts of ten European countries designed a cable system that includes high-voltage insulations and terminations. These results were presented to 60 participants at an international workshop in La Spezia, Italy, hosted by ASG Superconductors and co-organised by Nexans and IASS Potsdam. The breakthroughs were achieved within Demonstration No 5 of Best Paths, the largest research project funded by the European Union in the energy field in the last decade. Christian-Eric Bruzek, senior project manager at Nexans, said: “We have for the first time designed a high-voltage superconducting cable system capable of operating in direct current, while all the existing projects only deal with alternating current. The most challenging task is to manage the connection between the cable and the existing grid using high-voltage terminations. This will set the standards of the future for high-voltage grids.” The other innovation in the superconducting technology is that the cable is manufactured using magnesium diboride as a superconductor, which is very economical to produce. Giovanni Grasso, sales and business development manager Columbus Superconductors, said: “The reliability of our magnesium diboride wires has already been demonstrated by a number of full-scale prototype devices, such as MRI systems, induction heaters and fault current limiters. cable and

Rosendahl’s smart line control system RIO Information determines Rosendahl Nextrom’s success in the industry. The right information consists of collecting, organising and preparing it on a regular basis in order to subsequently draw conclusions and take the appropriate measures. In principle, that sounds easy, but what is becoming increasingly important is that this process functions in an analogue and automated fashion. The relevant information is now made available. That is the new premise according to which Rosendahl Nextrom now designs its production solutions. The so-called Smart Factory is already becoming a reality to the companies. RIO (Rosendahl Integrated Operation system) is a solution that meets these requirements and automatically organises and makes information available. Here, the information about production is automatically collected, aggregated, saved locally or optionally via the cloud, analysed, reported and optimised. For instance, each reel produced has its own special ID, which makes direct access to its data possible. From the process parameters and production times all the way to the machine operator, all the information about a reel can be read. The advantage is that information can automatically be accessed about production performance, quality reports, reel protocols, error message-related statistics, energy reports, OEE figures, etc. In addition, smart package add-ons for consumption measurement, extruder screw identification marking and integration in ERP/MES systems are available. “The key is communication”

Sikora pursues a growth strategy of diversification and, in addition to the wire and cable market, is active in four other business areas. How important is the wire and cable market for the company? The wire and cable market is one of our core markets. Since 1973, we have been providing our customers with innovative measuring and control devices to optimise production lines with regard to costs, quality and material consumption. According to requirements, we have been sharpening our profile and extending our product portfolio through the years. 45 years ago, we started with optical diameter and eccentricity measuring devices for insulating and sheathing lines. This was followed by laser measuring systems for diameter measurement of cables as well as measuring systems based on X-ray technology for wall thickness measurement of the insulation of high voltage cables. Customer requirements gave, in particular, impulses for technological innovations. Therefore, manufacturers of high voltage cables benefit, for example, from our measuring systems for dimension measurement and control of cables in CV lines. Furthermore, with our inspection, analysis and sorting technologies we offer manufacturers the possibility to inspect online and offline the purity of the material that is used for the cable insulation, as product quality starts with material purity. We see the production process as one whole and invest our knowledge where customers expect solutions. By developing new business areas, such as the plastics market, we create a win-win situation for our customers as they benefit from the variety of our technologies as well as the know-how we gathered from other markets. In addition, we also promote new and further developments of technologies within each of the business divisions. What was the reason for the development of the X-Ray 8000 Advanced? What are the customers’ advantages of this system? The story of our X-ray measuring systems started in the 1990s. Back then, the X-Ray 8000 for the non-contact measurement of diameter, ovality, eccentricity and wall thickness of cables in CV lines celebrated its premiere.

HARRY Prunk has been working for Sikora since 1975, and therefore is one of the company’s first employees. Today, he is a member of the managing board and supervises the business fields of wire and cable, optical fibre as well as hose and tube, and is responsible for sales, marketing and service. During this interview, he talks about the importance of the wire and cable market, product innovation, as well as the company’s future direction.

communication mean for your company? The key to a good customer relationship is communication. All forms of communication have their value but personal dialogue is essential. Therefore, Sikora established its first subsidiary 27 years ago. The Sikora teams in the subsidiaries have a strong understanding of customer processes, their requirements as well as the corresponding solutions offered by the company. Furthermore, they speak with customers in their native language and customer satisfaction is their main objective. Ten of 14 subsidiaries have their own service department. The way you communicate with customers is decisive to build a long-standing, trustful partnership. Which trends and challenges do you see in the future for measuring technologies and how will Sikora respond? When Harald Sikora founded the company we had a clear aim – capturing the market with innovative technology. We knew that the customer focus is on quality and efficiency in order to achieve a financial added value for his company. Thus, we have always invested sustainably in research and development at the headquarters in Bremen and nowadays compose of a team of almost 50 employees. Only with a strong team can new products with practically oriented features be realised in short cycles. In addition to technical innovations, the topics Industry 4.0 and digitalisation will challenge us in the long term. Manufacturers use measuring technology to generate production data that has an influence on business contexts in the company. In consequence, they directly contribute to product quality, process optimisation and increasing efficiency of the production. Sikora AG – Germany Website : www.sikora.net

In the year 2007, we launched the X-Ray 8000 NXT including several new features as the “next generation”. Highlights are the eight-point visualisation of the wall thickness and the concentricity for three insulation layers, the usage of ceramic respectively NXT windows (non-toxic) instead of beryllium that separate the scanners of the measuring system from the pressure room of the CV line as well as the multi-sensor technology. Today, in the era of Industry 4.0, there are further requirements towards the measuring technology. With the X-Ray 8000 Advanced, we have given the X-ray measurement another technical edge. The system measures with a measuring rate of up to ten times faster than the X-Ray 8000 NXT. This so-called High-Speed Technology (HST) provides all measuring and statistical data fast and comprehensively and thus offers even more transparency of the production process. The advantage of the faster measuring value and data logging is especially visible during the centring and control. How do you inform customers about new technologies and how do you start-up a dialogue? What does ❍ Harry Prunk, executive board member of Sikora AG

New web home for Ridgway

IN an emergency, fires can have disastrous consequences for both human lives and buildings. Highly combustible materials in buildings advance the rapid spread of fire and not only destroy stock and buildings but also put people’s lives at risk. Public buildings have a high user‐traffic flow and, in the event of fire, need to ensure an optimum and quick evacuation. Since 2017, the Construction Products Regulation for cables and conductors (BauPVO, EN 50575) has set a new standard, in which the fire performance requirements for cables also play a major role. Manufacturers and distributors must reclassify the performance of their products with regard to fire behaviour. Minor fire spread and the prevention of smoke gas development are included on the performance certificate. For example, a low‐smoke layer must be guaranteed for the duration of the evacuation. For these cases of application, Melos has developed compounds with low fire propagation properties and that release minimal toxic fumes and gases. This ensures more time for evacuation in the event of fire, and is less harmful for protective equipment, thereby making it easier to save people’s lives. Melos’s Mecoline compounds and filler materials use halogen‐free fireproofing materials that prevent the spread of flames and the development of smoke and flaming droplets. Consequently, precious time is saved and can be used to Ridgway Machines has launched its new website. quickly flee the area affected by fire, allowing rescue workers to carry out a safe evacuation. Melos GmbH – Germany Website : www.melos-gmbh.com Balance of power ABB has received an order from Transpower New Zealand Ltd to upgrade the HVDC link that interconnects the transmission grids and acts as an energy-balancing system between the North and South islands. Demand for power on the North Island, which has a population of over three times the population of the South Island, is substantially higher and relies on power generated on the South Island. The 600km North-South HVDC interconnection enables power transmission to areas of high demand, and plays an important role in the New Zealand electricity market by allowing power trading between the two islands. The first New Zealand link was commissioned in 1965 by ABB (then ASEA) as one of the earliest HVDC transmission systems in the world. It was originally a bipolar 600 MW link with mercury arc valves, until the original equipment was paralleled onto a single pole in 1992, and a new thyristor-based pole was commissioned to increase capacity to 1,040 MW. The first installation was decommissioned in 2012. The scope of the project includes a valve upgrade of pole two consisting of capacitors, fibre optics and valve control units based on the latest ABB Ability MACH control system.
