INDUSTRY Fully automatic coil end welder delivered to large pipe producer

The ME Zipwelder from Guild International with a combined MIG/TIG torch can handle strip

FOR more than 65 years Guild International has been engineering machinery for the tube and pipe manufacturing industry. Throughout its history, Guild has focused on evolving its product line to include more automation and safety options. “The goal has always been to separate personnel from the process,” said Mark Wagner, Guild’s vice president of sales. Guild’s most recent projects include a fully automatic coil end welder for a large pipe producer, which processes 5 / 8 " thick carbon steel, and includes smart vision systems, automatic shear and gap adjustment and a full maintenance package accessible via the welder’s HMI. Along with these automation features, Guild equipment can include a fully remote PLC module to monitor, diag- nose and troubleshoot machines from anywhere in the world. This minimises downtime and lost production by allowing Guild service engineers to immediately diagnose and remedy programming issues. With steel alloys constantly changing and advancing, Guild has developed machines with the flexibility to include

An internal team of controls engineers allows Guild to offer leading edge, fully automated systems. These on-staff controls engineers can design electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems as well as programming to meet each client’s exact requirements. Over the years Guild has become a single source supplier for entry equipment, providing a seamless, hands-free entry package to transfer and process coils from coil storage to the mill.

a host of options such as onboard milling stations, onboard induction annealing systems and combination TIG/MIG welding capabilities giving tube producers the tools to safely process these new steel grades. “With the advancement of steel grades, we needed to be sensitive to market expectations and pivot to provide the latest in automation and welding technology, which has pushed us into providing laser welding systems along with many other advancements on our equipment,” added Adam Butts, sales engineer, Guild.

Unison launches advanced tube bending application

displayed as either metric or imperial, while reports can be downloaded in PDF format for desktop filing, sharing, review and consideration. First introduced in 2012 for iPhone, Unison’s Tube Bending Application app quickly became a useful tool for application engineers and tooling designers. As the app grew in popularity, and requests for android and desktop operating systems were received, in 2018 it became fully web-based, with a mobile-friendly look and feel. “Since it was first launched ten years ago, our free app has revolutionised the way customers calculate bending criteria, providing them with a rapid insight into the necessary tooling setup, machine type and torque required to complete even the most complex of bends,” said Unison’s joint managing director, Alan Pickering. “In our latest app, we have made significant improvements to useability and navigation, as well as enabling users to organise files into a folder structure that can be accessed across all their devices. We will soon also be linking the data created by the app to our comprehensive bend tool quoting and manufacturing offer. This will provide users with a seamless, rapid means of costing and ordering any tooling they require. “Before creating our app, we consulted with a number of customers to ensure that it would bring greater value to their tube bending processes. The new app does precisely that and is a further reflection of our commitment to not only build tube bending machines, but also provide the finest software and support systems to maximise their usage. "We are proud that Unison software is considered to be the most user-friendly for tube manipulation tasks.”

UNISON Ltd, a manufacturer of tube and pipe bending machines based in the UK, has launched an all-new version of its free-to-use Tube Bending Application app. With intuitive new features, they believe it is the most advanced app of its kind for users of tube bending machinery. The app makes it straightforward for tube bending machinery operators to establish the required tooling type, mandrel style, size and material, as well as bend torque and machine size. As an additional benefit, a clear, simple indication of ‘application difficulty’ – the difficulty of bending virtually any metal, wall thickness and diameter – is also provided. Where customers are looking to bend new components or start new projects, but do not have the correct tooling or machinery, the app provides a valuable feasibility/viability check, detailing essential data regarding the equipment they will need to use. In creating its all-new Tube Bending Application app, Unison’s in-house software design team introduced a whole range of user-friendly, intelligent new features. These include a new project-specific filing system and a new dashboard for instant access to tube data, project notes, tooling setup, mandrel setup and machine power. There is an updated conversion tool for transforming XYZ coordinates into YBC bending data. As in previous versions of the app, units of measurement can be

Resilient UK manufacturing delivers strong year for Mazak

about the future, particularly those who have more technologically advanced machining operations. Anecdotally, we are hearing that there is still a 5-axis capacity gap in the market, which is a major opportunity for the UK’s subcontract manufacturing base. The message coming from the market is that if you’ve got the right technology, we’ll help you fill that machine.” Mr Mucklow said Mazak has demonstrated strong growth across multiple sectors and machine types. “We’ve seen growth in key sectors including defence, medical and energy, including renewables; as well as automotive, which is trying to fill a backlog of orders for new vehicles. The stand-out sector however has been aerospace, which is benefiting from the major aircraft OEMs increasing production, such as Airbus with the A320.” He continued: “We’ve also benefited from the introduction of new machines with a lower price point, such as the CV5-500 5-axis machining centre that continues to be a star performer among our UK-built machines. The VCE-600 vertical machining centre is opening up new opportunities among customers who have never previously acquired

THE continued resilience of the UK’s manufacturing base has delivered a strong sales year for Yamazaki Mazak in the UK. Despite challenging conditions, the company has reported strong sales in key markets and machine categories as UK manufacturers continued to invest in new technologies. Alan Mucklow, managing director UK, Eire and national distributors at Yamazaki Mazak, said the company’s strong UK sales demonstrate that UK manufacturing remains highly competitive. “Against a challenging backdrop of rising inflation, interest rates, skills shortages and energy costs, we have delivered a strong year for machine sales driven in large part by the continued resilience of the UK’s manufacturing base. The post-Covid upturn that started in H2 2021 continued into 2022 and we delivered a record month for production in late autumn. Our new machine sales figures are proof that UK manufacturing is willing to invest in new technology in order to remain productive and competitive. He added: “Our customers are telling us that they remain very busy, order books are full and they are confident

Mazak technology, and we’ve seen very strong interest in our new VCN-700 high performance machining centre.” Looking forward, Mr Mucklow said Mazak is responding to demand in the market with a number of initiatives. “We’re continuing to work closely with automation partners to deliver plug and play machine and automation solutions that are helping our customers respond to the deepening skills crisis. “Our automation solutions continue to go from strength to strength as customers see the value of freeing up high-value employees from low value tasks to concentrate on critical applications. “We’re also introducing a new sales structure that will be rolled out shortly and, the fact that it is an EMO year, will inevitably drive further innovation. There is much to look forward to and we remain very positive in our outlook.”

been improved and a breakthrough in intelligent manufacturing with centralised remote control has been achieved with the help of AI technology. Consequently, Daye is able to optimise its tube mill production processes from one control station. With the demand for smart factories increasing worldwide, the IOC has taken on a key role. An entire plant, from ironmaking to finished product, can be integrated into a central operating centre, not only for greenfield factories, but for existing complexes too. The IOC represents the pinnacle of excellence of the production complex, facilitating plant and logistics management by concentrating information and thereby significantly reducing the required manpower. Following implementation of the IOC, the 460mm tube plant at Daye Special Steel can be operated with the highest possible degree of automation. The number of discrete control elements across the entire rolling line has been reduced from 550 to 50. Only six operators manage the entire rolling line, a reduction of 10. The new IOC and the introduction of autonomous operation play an important part in improving both product yield and quality, SMS group said.

SMS GROUP has completed its first X-Pact ® integrated operating centre (IOC), a central monitoring room for the entire 460mm tube plant, at Daye Special Steel in Hubei Province, China. With the Daye 460 project, which also includes the enhancement of the tube plant’s existing automation systems, SMS group has achieved a breakthrough in its IOC application, an important milestone on the path to X-Pact ® Lights-out. Cameras installed along the production line provide the basis for centralised operator monitoring, eliminating the need for operating activities in the harsh environmental conditions commonly found in the metallurgical industry. The automation system utilises AI video analytics to respond to abnormal situations during production. The line’s level of automation has
