Shorter pipe lengths in themanufacturing process no longer have to be separated for testing at a later time, thus ensuring a substantial advantage for production logistics and throughput. The technology package is rounded off by a very fast and highly precise pressure control system,” said Michael Stark from PWS. Thanks to the use of modern technology the up-to-date hydrotesting facility provides high flexibility and a high level of efficiency. Due to the automated plant and quick filling of the pipes SMLP achieves a significant reduction of the cycle time of 30 per cent. The new hydrostatic press also meets future requirements with regard to safety, flexibility and productivity. During setup and commissioning of the new equipment the ongoing production was not interrupted. The facility came on stream in the second quarter of 2013.

Diary of Tube Events

George A Mitchell celebrates 50 th year THE George A Mitchell company, which specialises in the development and manufacture of a line of push pointers for the tube and pipe industries, has celebrated its 50 th year in business. George Mitchell, owner and president, started the business as a one-man company in 1963, after a highly active career in the design and manufacture of extrusion presses and draw benches. His insight into the need for a better way of pointing ends of tubes other than by rotary hammer swaging or heating and squeezing, as was done prior to 1963, resulted in Mitchell developing the push pointer. Over the past 50 years, the George A Mitchell company has produced more than 700 pointers and dozens of tube handling systems for producers of aluminium, copper, brass, steel, stainless steel, nickel and even titanium and zirconium tubing. Investment in new development facilities

Robotic installation with TIG torch

multi-directional and multi-tasking tool holders – are suited to welding by focusing on the torch, the decisive component in the tools developed by Polysoude. The ‘robotics’ approach is not a recent phenomenon at Polysoude. On numerous occasions over the last decade or more, the company has integrated different brands of robot to meet customer needs as closely as possible. Wherever irreproachable joint quality is a compulsory factor, the axes of movement and motion peripherals are designed on a case-by-case basis to transform the robot into a more suitable control device. The robot can accommodate all types of torch depending on the cold-wire or hot-wire TIG or plasma welding process adopted, not only for standard joints but also narrow gap applications. This approach has resulted in the acquisition of new programming skills within the company’s applications department for the development of welding procedures. At the Polysoude Future plans call for an expansion of the building to over 100,000ft 2 , enabling Rattunde to produce its entire finished length tube and solid bar production sys- tems there. This decision was reached after analysis of the current and antici- pated business needs of the company. According to Rattunde Corporation president Richard Stadler, growth of the company into diverse markets throughout North America made the new facility a logical choice. “There were several reasons why we wanted to remain in the greater Grand Rapids area, but one of the main reasons is the excellent talent base here. Companies are built on people and, whether you are looking for an experienced veteran

POLYSOUDE has been proposing comprehensive automated welding solutions for many years. Multi-axis CNC systems, and even robots, are designed to cope with demands for increasingly high welding or cladding speeds in numerous industrial sectors. Many industrial manufacturers faced with high output rates must also tackle difficulties relating to the complexity of the applications and the solutions available on the market. If the purchase and definition of components are within their grasp, the assembly and interfacing required to turn them into a functional machine can prove to be a more arduous task. Polysoude enables full integration through its commitment to supply turnkey systems. Conventional automated welding solutions are restricted in most cases to linear or rotary movements due to the torch holder. However, manufacturers increasingly have to deal with complex welding or cladding trajectories, limited accessibility, or environmental constraints. Robots – essentially multi-functional, RATTUNDE, a Germany-based manu- facturer of finished length tube and solid bar production systems, has been operating in the North American market for over seven years. The company is building a 30,000ft 2 facility near its current location in Grand Rapids, Michigan, scheduled to open in April. The plant will continue to house the North American sales and service operations and will allow for expanded spare parts inventory and manufacturing operations, including the production of tooling and various machine components. The new facility will also house a technical centre with a machine on-site at all times for demonstration and training.

The main characteristics of this technology are: simplicity and rapidity in changing diameter; very simple and easy maintenance; simplicity in the software utilisation; the mill allows users to produce both square and rectangular

The other line can produce square sections from 40x40 up to 120x120mm and rectangular sections from 40x30 mm to 160x80mm, in a thickness range from 1.5mm to 8mm with max speed 90m/min. Both lines will be assembled in Olimpia 80’s plant in Piacenza, Italy. Four similar lines with linear cage forming technology are installed in Italy, Turkey, USA and Germany, and in addition to the two lines described above, there was a recent order for a cage forming mill for round tube sections for the automotive industry at a European company. FABTECH fundraising campaign helps Illinois storm victims FABTECH has announced a campaign to raise funds from the manufacturing community for victims of the storms that devastated Washington, Illinois, and other areas of the state. The five FABTECH show partners are donating $10,000 to launch the campaign and California-based Sutherland Presses, an exhibitor at the show, has pledged to match other contributions up to a total of $5,000. The show partners are urging all show exhibitors and attendees to contribute to the campaign, with funds collected going to the American Red Cross to help victims of the storms. FABTECH, the largest metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing event in North America, took place at McCormick Place in Chicago. The show expected to attract 35,000 manufacturers to view 1,500 exhibits, including live equipment demonstrations, on more than 600,00ft 2 of floor space. “There are many people in our host state who are struggling to recover from the physical and economic damage caused by these storms that hit on a set-up day for FABTECH 2013,” said Bill Gaskin, president of the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA), on behalf of the show partners. “Some of our exhibitors and attendees were directly impacted by the storm, and we wanted to show the victims of this tragedy that the manufacturing community stands with them in their time of need.”
