German NDT supplier receives major order A PRODUCTION facility for seamless, hot rolled tubes with several finishing lines and an estimated production capacity of around 300,000 tons of steel tubes is currently under construction in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA. For the second construction phase of the $975mn project, the completion of a melt shop is planned. The principal for this project is Benteler GmbH, which has successfully partnered with Institut Dr Foerster GmbH & Co KG for its testing equipment in the past. As a result, the German producer of systems for non-destructive testing of products from the metal producing and metalworking industry was chosen for this project, and has received one of the largest orders in its 65 year corporate history. “Since we have already delivered testing units for Benteler in Germany and have enjoyed a successful partnership throughout these projects, the company again wanted to fall back on proven solutions for this major project,” said Dr Rainer Sailer, head of sales and marketing at Foerster’s test systems division. In order to ensure high quality standards for steel tubes, which Benteler will be producing in America for the first time, the company ordered the high-end technology for the testing of hot rolled tubes. Foerster will provide the extensive technology, including a Circoson WT, as well as the entire mechanics with tables and drivers, and automation. Foerster will also perform the software integration of all test instruments into the Benteler finishing lines. In Shreveport, Benteler will produce tube solutions for energy generation, oil and gas production, and chemical and petrochemical industry. In these fields, material properties need to be guaranteed under norms such as API and ASTM. “With the help of our instruments, multi test lines for non- destructive testing of hot rolled tubes in the finishing lines are being formed. They will ensure that wall thickness, as well as outer diameter of the tubes, will accurately meet all requirements, and eventual surface defects will be traced reliably,” reported Dr Sailer. The units will be delivered in 2015.
