Innovation leads the way at wire Change is something we have all had to contend with over the last year. Our industries thrive on the many exhibitions worldwide, which have been curtailed. However, the successful staging of wire China in September reflects recovery that is slowly, but surely, spreading worldwide. In accommodating more than 36,500 visitors, wire China acted as a barometer in Asia for recovery. Travel restrictions may have meant there were decreased numbers of foreign visitors in Shanghai, but the optimism spreading throughout the halls, which saw 725 exhibitors occupy 581,000ft 2 of exhibition space, was a sign that the world is ready to do business once again. This has been echoed by industry associations and companies from the wire and cable world as the leading international exhibition – wire – prepares to stage a delayed week-long fair in Düsseldorf, Germany. “Our industry is synonymous with innovation, sustainability and a long-term orientation,“ said Ralf Kappertz, CEO of Maschinenfabrik Niehoff and president of the IWCEA. “We will now be doing our utmost to also make this wire and Tube – despite being held under special circumstances – what they have always been: the communication and business platforms of the wire, cable and tube industries.” These sentiments were also echoed by other association leaders. “We are confident that personal conversation and live demonstrations of machinery offered by a trade fair cannot be replaced by video conferences,” said Dr Uwe-Peter Weigmann, CEO of WAFIOS and president of VDKM.

Successful wire China 2020 reflects industry recovery

The latest staging of wire China was held in Shanghai within strict hygiene protocols, and closed successfully. At the influential international trade fair for the wire and cable industry, 725 exhibitors showcased their products and technologies on 581,200ft 2 of exhibit space. A total of 36,552 trade visitors participated in wire China and the concurrently held Tube China trade fair. wire China also welcomed 49 buyer groups. Due to the COVID-19 related travel restrictions, foreign participation decreased this year, but in addition to 640 Chinese companies, wire China 2020 featured two overseas pavilions – from Germany and France – where the companies’ branch offices or agents in China presented the latest innovations. With these results, wire China confirmed its status as a “barometer” for the wire and cable industry in Asia, and

provided the industry with an important communication platform, especially in these difficult times. Marius Berlemann, general manager of event organiser Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co, Ltd, stated, “I would like to thank our partners, exhibitors and all participants for their support of wire China. It is the joint efforts of all parties that make the exhibition run successfully ... I believe that wire China will keep growing and look forward to meeting more participants in 2022.” Slavko Panzalovic, area sales manager at Maschinenfabrik Niehoff, commented, “During the exhibition, we met a lot of valuable customers. There were more visitors than I expected and our important buyers were there. This is a perfect platform to get close to customers, to present machines and technologies and to acquire new clients.” The president of Sikora (Fuzhou) Electronic Technology Co, Wanbin Chen, said, “This is the ninth time that Sikora

has participated in wire China. During the four-day exhibition we talked to many high-quality buyers and potential partners.” Mao Xingwang, board director and GM of Rosendahl Nextrom Oy Shanghai Representative Office, also shared positive feedback: “Since 2004, we continue to participate in every wire China. The customers we meet here account for almost 90 per cent of the total. Our optical fibre and cable business department has established contacts with many potential customers during the show.” The exhibits were complemented by seminars and conferences in cooperation with industry associations from China and abroad. The next edition of wire China is scheduled for September 2022, at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

In 2016, the Clinton Instrument Company introduced the B-Series HF-15B high frequency spark tester. This year, the company has expanded the B-Series model line to include three additional models: DC-B, AC-30B and TST-B. The direct current DC-B is available in 1kV, 10kV and 20kV models and is suited to testing very small cables or cables with delicate insulation. The DC-B is also equipped to test products with high capacitance, such as wide, flat cables. The mains frequency AC-30B is designed to test large cables at voltages up to 30kV. Clinton offers a variety of electrodes capable of testing cables up to 8" in diameter or for testing smaller cables at up to 1,200 feet per minute to UL standards. The TST-B is a specialised DC spark tester that mounts inside the bow of a double turn buncher. It allows for a spark test directly before take-up, which would not be possible with a traditional tester.

The TST-B communicates wirelessly with a control unit placed outside the buncher. features DSP-based fault detection and the ability to differentiate between four different fault types: pinhole, multi-pinhole, direct metal contact and gross bare wire. The equipment is capable of direct communication with a PLC via direct 0-10V analogue, or over Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, Ethernet IP, Profibus, Profinet or DeviceNET. Clinton is also debuting the IB-A series of communication modules. The IB-A will allow Clinton A-Series spark testers to take advantage of the same communication options as the newer B-Series equipment. Clinton’s model FL-20A can accurately locate either direct or high voltage shorts between conductors in multi-conductor cables, or locate broken conductors. The FL-20A is fully automatic and provides results with the push of a button. All B-Series equipment

Until recently, systems for measuring the quality of products inline during the process were used almost exclusively for process control. Process variables were measured and compared with target values, and the settings of the production plant were optimised with the deviations determined. With the development of Industry 4.0, this is often no longer sufficient – the quality of the production processes should not only be regulated, but also analysed and documented. In order to fulfil these requirements Fuhr has brought its F-MAS data acquisition and evaluation system to the market. measurement acquisition system) is available as an additional option to tactile measuring systems but can also be retrofitted to existing digital or analogue measuring systems. During development, special attention was paid to compatibility with third-party systems, especially with regard to retrofitting. Two wire dimensions (eg width and thickness of a rectangular profile) are The F-MAS (Fuhr

measured with a measuring frequency of 250 Hz. This real data is displayed in diagrams, statistical values are calculated, and frequency distributions are displayed. Reports are generated and raw data is exported, with integration into customer networks. Data export to standard data analysis software is possible via an OPC-UA interface. Also integrated is an FFT analysis, which detects cyclical dimensional fluctuations. For example, the concentricity error of a roller or the defect of a bearing or gearbox is identified as the cause of a quality problem based on the frequency of occurrence of the error. As a manufacturer of wire profile rolling mills, Fuhr faces increasing demands on geometric precision. Its modern high-speed rolling mills are equipped with several measuring systems. Conventional laser shadow measurement systems, typically used in the drawing of round wires, have not proven to be successful in profiling lines: even a slight tilting of the wire changes the size of the shadow, and laser systems cannot

Fuhr therefore relies on tactile mea- suring in which the wire is scanned with diamond-studded, high-resolution displacement measuring systems. Alternatively, instead of diamond styli, stylus rollers adapted to the wire geometry are available.

NDC Technologies will exhibit its complete line of intelligent, connected measurement and control solutions from the Beta LaserMike Products range at wire 2020. The line-up includes new products that advance process and quality control. Visitors will get a first-hand view of a complete end-to-end measurement system solution – from the extruder through to the puller – for producing higher quality products, increasing productivity and realising production savings. NDC Technologies’ LayScan is a solution for accurately and consistently measuring the lay length of twisted pairs at the cabler. The latest innovation – LayScan Pro – takes lay length measurement a step further, enabling cable makers to precisely monitor and control the lay length as twisted pairs are being made inside the bow of a twinning machine. LayScan Pro enables manufacturers to confidently transform lay length data into intelligence to optimise twisted-pair cable production. It maximises product quality through greater accuracy, ensures

lay length consistency from run to run, drives cost efficiencies with true lay length control and improves processes with data-driven analytics. The new LaserSpeed ® Pro M Series gauge accurately and reliably measures the length and speed of long, continuous cylindrical products that bounce and cannot be well-guided, or that move off-axis and out of the measurement range. The patent-pending gauge uses a laser Doppler velocimetry optical technique to perform measurements on bare conductor wire, insulated primary wire, metal bar/rod and metal cord, among other products. With over 25 years in service, there are more than 10,000 LaserSpeed gauges installed worldwide. NDC’s new AccuScan Pro gauge provides 100 per cent on-line inspection of multi-strand wire. The system accurately measures the diameter of multiple wires simultaneously and instantly detects any missing and broken strands. Manufacturers can monitor the process in real time for a complete view of product quality, and can benefit from material savings.

International Wire and Machinery Association

Stand: 11 D22

The International Wire and Machinery Association (IWMA) celebrates its 50 th anniversary year at wire Düsseldorf by showing off a bold new look for the new decade. The world’s largest and most influential corporate membership body for the wire and cable industries will sport a new logo, new corporate colours and an entire brand tool kit, among other changes. The IWMA was founded in the UK in 1970 by a group of industry leaders, and today promotes the interests of hundreds of corporate members, from global, billion-dollar industries to micro-companies offering specialist services on a small scale. The IWMA includes one of the world’s oldest wire- making companies as a member – Webster and Horsfall of Birmingham, UK – this year celebrating its 300 th anniversary. Explaining the rebrand as part of a forward-looking strategy, executive manager Andy Lewis said, “Over the past couple of years we have been changing our internal structures to make ourselves more useful and vital to members, and the rebrand is the IWMA pointing

itself at the 2020s and beyond, so we can be a broader, even more involved association.” The rebrand also extends to a redesign of the exhibition stand seen at major wire and cable exhibitions around the world, and the IWMA newsletter, WCN , has also been given a new look. Van Der Zwan commented, “This a major milestone in the life of a body that started very small, with just a handful of industry leaders who saw that wire and cable was an under-represented sector of a growing industry. Today we see just how much the industry has grown in that 50 years, Association chairman Martin

driving modern communication systems, transport infrastructure and the Internet – wire and cable products literally connect both the world and the sum of human knowledge. It’s an extraordinary progression. “The IWMA is right there with the industry, disseminating technical know- ledge, helping members at exhibitions and with international representation, and taking a role in the education of tomorrow’s wire and cable engineers and scientists.” International Wire and Machinery Association www.iwma.org
