competitors who are shipping rebar into the region from long distances.”

The $240 million investment is the second rebar micro mill that Nucor is constructing. In November 2017, Nucor announced a rebar micro mill project in Sedalia, Missouri. “We are building this rebar micro mill in a great and growing market where demand is strong and there is currently an abundant supply of scrap, a good portion of which is handled by our scrap business, the David J Joseph Company,” explained John Ferriola, chairman, CEO and president of Nucor Corporation. “Consistent with our planned strategy of being a low-cost producer, this micro mill will give us a cost advantage over our

The micro mill is expected to employ around 250 people.

The mill will have an estimated annual capacity of 350,000 tons and construction is expected to take two years, pending permit and regulatory approvals. “We would like to thank the many state and local officials, leaders and partners who have assisted us with the project,” said Dave Sumoski, executive vice president of merchant and rebar products. “Identifying the right location is an essential part of our rebar micro mill strategy, and this part of central Florida met all the criteria we evaluate.”

Directing bandwidth traffic

Lumos Networks Corporation is working on a project that will enable it to route bandwidth traffic from two undersea cables to data centers in Ashburn. Lumos plans to connect its fiber network to a co-location facility operated by Globalinx Data Centers. The Globalinx facility is a short distance from the cable landing stationwhere, later this year, undersea cables will connect Virginia Beach with Spain and Brazil. Once the Lumos network is connected to the Globalinx building it will also be linked to the cable landing station. With that development, explained Timothy GBiltz, Lumos CEO: “Wewill have the ability to route bandwidth traffic from the cable landing station all the way to numerous data centers in Ashburn. It is estimated that 70 percent of total global Internet traffic passes through the Ashburn area.”

Greg Twitt, president of Globalinx, said: “Virginia Beach is becoming the new continental edge, where the subsea networks from around the world can hand-off the international traffic, directly and seamlessly, to terrestrial networks at a Globalinx co-location facility.” The two undersea cables are Marea, jointly owned by Telefonica (Telxius), Microsoft and Facebook, and Brusa, totally owned by Telefonica. Marea was expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2018, with Brusa, which will connect the station with Brazil, expected to begin operating during the second half of 2018. Lumos, which serves markets in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and Kentucky, has a fiber network of 11,028 route miles.

Urban Bollö (right), CEO and partner of Windak AB, shakes hands with Jacob Nilsson, CEO and owner of Axjo Plastic to celebrate the deal

Packaging acquisition

Axjo Plastic AB is to acquire 24 percent of Windak AB.

Axjo Plastic, like Windak, is a privately owned Swedish company, manufacturing, marketing and selling cable drums and other round packaging for cable, fiber and string products. “After working with Windak since 2003, it’s extra fun to integrate our business more. There will be great advantages for our customers that themachines, already at the design table, are adapted to the correct cable drums. We will also come up with new concepts where customers can “pay by unit” and thus rent the machines, instead of buying them,” said Jacob Nilsson, CEO and owner of Axjo Plastic.

The acquisition is in Windak Holding AB and the sister companies Windak AB, Windak Inc, Windak Australia and Windak OU in Estonia. “For Windak, and for our customers, there are great benefits of closer cooperation. For example, we can construct concepts that reduce shipping costs for the coils properly by mounting the coils directly in the Windak machine. Axjo also has a good sales staff who can reach out…and inform about all the new technical possibilities Windak has to offer,” explained Urban Bollö, CEO and partner of Windak AB.

Specialist winches

Flat wire profits expected

Greek company Assodivers Underwater Contractors has taken delivery of two MERMAC winches from MacArtney: one 19.5-tonAHC (active heave compensation) winch and one 6-ton umbilical winch. The winches will be part of a project relating to Denmark’s biggest offshore wind farm, Kriegers Flak, located in a shallow area in the Baltic Sea between Denmark, Sweden and Germany. The AHCwinch is intended to relocate huge stones on the seafloor, and the umbilical winch will pull a cable plow. Electric AHC winch solutions are often preferred for ROV systems and for handling equipment that is to operate near or on the seabed. Within this context, these MERMAC winches are used extensively by major work class ROV operators and service providers offering their customers optimal system safety and operational efficiency when being involved in the launch and recovery of ROVs, towed systems, corers, drills, plows, pumps, sonars, sensors, diving systems and other equipment types. AHC immediately compensates for vessel movement caused by waves, even in heavy seas. This feature reduces weather- related downtime and facilitates launch and recovery of tethered equipment. The Belgian steel wire maker Bekaert is anticipating no increase in profit in 2018 following a lower than expected profit decline in 2017. The business climate in Latin America is described as “difficult”, and higher wire rod costs are set to cap margins. The company, whose steel wire is said to reinforce nearly a third of the world’s automotive tires, forecast strength in most other regions with good demand for its wire in automotive, mining and construction markets. Rising oil price is also improving prospects in the oil and gas sector. The difficult economic climate in Latin America, volatile wire rod prices, low demand for loose abrasive sawing wire, and a possible impact from US trade policy will limit the company’s margins for 2018. However: “We are confident we will improve our profitability progressively during the year to achieve the same profitability level of 2017,” the company said.

Towering solar plant China’s cable clearances

The task of removing overhead hanging cables has begun, with officials saying some key areas in Hongkou, Xuhui and Huangpu districts will be clear within weeks. A new type of street lamp is being introduced in which the cables will run through the poles. The multifunctional lamp is over 8m high. At the top of the pole will be the lamp, with traffic signals below it, followed by pedestrian walking lights. Combining different functions into the street lamps will not only save resources and space, but will also make them pleasing to the eye, said a spokesman from the Shanghai Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Shanghai first started to remove the cables in the 1990s but, due to the complicated ownership of the space and limited underground area, only about 600km of cables could be removed in the past two decades and the project was basically shelved after 2011. This year alone, 100km of overhead cables will be removed. A worker on a ladder sorts out overhead cables in Shanghai. Photograph courtesy of Wang Rongjiang
