The need for face-to-face meetings, conversation and gathering of expert knowledge was highlighted with the return of wire 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany, at the end of June. And with more than 1,000 exhibitors travelling from 51 countries, the industry emphasised the importance of doing business on a personal level. It is no surprise that the eagerly anticipated return of wire saw 1,057 exhibitors take 53,000m 2 of exhibition space for what is the largest exhibition in our industry calendar. Around 70 per cent of visitors were from abroad, with visitors from Europe and, farther afield, USA, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, India and Japan. “In-depth conversations about the current challenges associated with the global energy transition, new requirements made on machines and equipment – and all of this considering sustainability aspects – the need for discussion among exhibitors and visitors in the exhibition halls was enormous,” said Daniel Ryfisch, project director of wire/tube and flow technologies at organisers Messe Düsseldorf. Expansion on a grand scale can be highlighted in this issue of Wire & Cable ASIA with news from Delta Tecnic, a specialist in masterbatches for the cable and PVC industry, posting revenues of over €50mn in 2021 – up 12 per cent over the previous year. This resulted in the starting up of a masterbatch plant in Querétaro, Mexico, where the company has been selling its products for 25 years. It is also experiencing growth across Europe, and making inroads into Asia, especially India, as more than 75 per cent of its production is exported. Full story on page 8.

The global masterbatch market grew at a CAGR of 3.1 per cent from 2017 to 2021

The global masterbatch market grew at a CAGR of 3.1 per cent from 2017 to 2021, to a total figure of $14.933bn, according to a study by Precision Business Insights. Over the same four-year period, Delta Tecnic’s global business grew by 9 per cent. The same study shows that the European region recorded a masterbatch market share of 29 per cent in 2021, and is expected to grow by 5.2 per cent between 2022 and 2029. Spain is the fourth-largest European country in terms of masterbatch market share, at 13.7 per cent in 2021, and is expected to grow by more than 4 per cent between 2022 and 2029. The trend remains upward for the company in 2022, with turnover up 21.4 per cent in the first four months, compared to the same period last year. The company states that its progress is the result of its commitment to sectors of “prime necessity” or those that are currently undergoing technological change, such as electromobility, energy transition and telecommunications. The main sectors for the company are energy, construction and automotive. Borax-free lubricants ahead of new regulations Lubricant producer Condat is taking a lead in alerting the wire drawing industry about regulation changes occurring in the European Union regarding borax, which may impact investments and safety procedures. Borax has traditionally been used in two types of wire drawing products – surface coatings and dry drawing lubricants – but the substance has been controversial in the wire drawing industry for more than 15 years. Often employed in wire preparation after acid picking and phosphating, borax coating is used to improve the pick-up of the dry drawing lubricant and to neutralise any acid residues on the wire. It is sometimes incorporated as a high-performance additive in dry drawing lubricants. However, due to its chemical composition, it has been identified several times by the European Union for the potential reprotoxic danger it represents. Further to the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2021/849 published in the Official Journal of the European Union in May 2021, the regulation on Borax Classification, Labelling and Packaging will change from 17 December 2022. Products containing ≥0.3 per cent borax and/or boric acid will be classified as Reprotoxic Category 1B in the European Union. As a result, the hazard statement “H360FD: May damage fertility. May damage the unborn child” will be added to the safety data sheet and the label of these products, accompanied by the “exploding chest” hazard pictogram. In many EU countries the law will therefore require: substitution of products classified as Reprotoxic Cat 1B with non-CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, reprotoxic) products; the confinement of installations using reprotoxic products; or the health, safety and environment department of the concerned sites having to put in place collective/individual protective equipment suitable for the handling of CMR products. Other EU countries will have an incentive to substitute products classified as Reprotoxic Cat 1B without binding measures or equivalent law, but in all EU countries the disposal cost of used borax-containing soaps is likely to increase following their classification as reprotoxic. The REACH authorisation procedure is still pending but, if confirmed, all users of products containing borax or boric acid will be obliged to substitute these products or face very restrictive use measures that will involve factory investments to control the risks as well as a fee of a few tens of thousands of euros. Metalube ships to its 100 th country Industrial lubricant specialist Metalube has shipped a container of Alumol 195 aluminium wire drawing lubricant to Azerbaijan, making it the 100 th country on the company’s export list. Established in 1988, the lubricant producer has always been a sizable exporter, with more than 95 per cent of its production shipped globally each year. This year, however, the company is

Three-roll RSB for new greenfield rolling mill project Chinese steel producer Chengde Jianlong Iron & Steel Co Ltd has placed an order with Friedrich Kocks GmbH for a reducing and sizing block (RSB ® ) 500++/4 in star drive design, for its straight bar mill. intermediate train, and will produce straight bars within a dimension range of Ø 60 to 160mm.
