Mitchell rejuvenates draw bench exper tise THE George A Mitchell Company and its founder, George Mitchell, have always been associated with the tube drawing industry. Prior to producing over 700 push pointers and special cold forming machines, the company sold and produced draw benches of various capacities for steel, copper and aluminium.

Realising the experience Mitchell has in this field, and being familiar with the machines the company has produced over the past 55 years, prompted a copper tube producer in North America to approach Mitchell to engineer and manufacture a 50,000 lb three-tube draw bench. The bench is capable of developing well over its rated 50,000 lb capacity utilising a 350 Hp reversing motor and drive system. Incorporating a pull stroke in excess of 130 ft and a triple die head with spherical die pockets for accurate die adjustment enables this bench to produce very straight tubes. Much of the technology used in the 50,000 lb-rated bench was from original patented features George Mitchell developed over his 55 years of experience in the design and manufacture of equipment for the tube

The other produces superconductor rod prior to drawing, which is further processed into wire to be used in MRI machines for the health care industry, particle accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider, and other high-tech applications. Variable wall drawn tubing is another area in which Mitchell has been involved. Developed in 1985, Mitchell holds a patent on this process. The ‘tailored drawn tubes’ can be used for a variety of applications to service the automotive, sporting goods and energy industries. RISING oil prices have brought the focus back on the oil and gas sector in the Middle East with the pipe and tube sector standing to gain from the rise. The oil price has surged to a four- year high, boosting oil exports for GCC governments and encouraging them to spend more to stimulate growth. “Every rise in the price of oil boosts the budget position of regional governments. Now, apart from the revival of stalled projects, infrastructure, construction and transport projects are set to increase significantly across the Gulf region. Oil and gas projects account for a big chunk of active projects in the area and one segment that stands to benefit is pipes and tubes,” said Abdalla Sultan Mohamed Al Owais, chairman of

the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Expo Centre Sharjah. The buoyant market has resulted in a significant rise in queries from those interested in attending the upcoming edition of the region’s premier metal working industry event – SteelFab 2019. HYPERTHERM, a manufacturer of industrial cutting systems and software, has announced its selection as a Forbes magazine America’s Best honouree, taking 30 th place on the list of the 500 Best Midsize Employers, and second among engineering and manufacturing companies. Forbes worked with market research company Statista to pinpoint the companies liked best by employees. The rankings are divided into two lists: one for large companies with more than 5,000 employees, and the other for mid-sized companies like Hypertherm who employ between 1,000 and 5,000 people. To create the list, Statista surveyed 30,000 Americans working for both large and mid-sized employers. The surveys were anonymous, allowing participants to openly share their opinions. Respondents were asked to rate the likelihood of recommending

their employer to others, in addition to answering questions related to working conditions, salary, potential for development and company image. Respondents also had the opportunity to nominate organisations in industries outside their own. The final list ranks

In the case of stationary installations, EFD Induction offers the advanced and reliable Sinac universal heat generator, which can be custom engineered to optimally fit customer applications and integrate into existing production lines and processes. “Our exhibition stands will be manned with people who are experts in their field,” said Mr Runeborg. “So, if you have questions or things you would like to discuss with us, please drop by and we will do our best to find suitable solutions for your induction heating needs.”

“When we see that they will be of specific benefit to our customers, EFD Induction offers SiC transistors as an alternative to IGBT,” said global sales director for tube and pipe Peter Runeborg. “In fact, we have now delivered welders with SiC transistors to customers in North America, Europe and Asia. These have ranged in power from a couple of hundred kilowatts to an amazing 1,850 kW.” SiC transistors have proven to work efficiently in high frequency welders, which are suitable for smaller pipes where impeder size is limited. Weldac is EFD Induction’s family of high-output, solid-state tube and pipe welders, which covers a wide range of power sizes – from 50 to 2,200 kW. As one of the world’s largest induction heating manufacturers, EFD Induction is a leader in induction heating technology, solutions and application expertise.

Peter Runeborg

“Our heating solutions are employed throughout many demanding industries where they are renowned for their compactness, productivity, reliability and efficiency,” said Mr Runeborg. “Ultimately, of course, this is providing significant advantages to our customers.” Induction produces quick, accurate, controllable and repeatable heat, which makes it an excellent method for various applications used in the heating of metals. “For the tube and pipe industry, for example, induction is used not only for longitudinal seam welding but for annealing as well as pre- and post- heating,” said Mr Runeborg. EFD Induction has a comprehensive range of solutions for the tube and pipe industry, and through EHE Consumables it offers a full range of consumables including coils, ferrite, impeders and tube scarfing equipment. All of its products are supported by a global network of EFD Induction factories, workshops and offices, meaning after-sales service and support are available. EFD Induction will also be participating at several upcoming
