Welcome to the latest Tube Products INTERNATIONAL magazine, which is a special Tube Düsseldorf issue. If you are attending the event then I hope that within these 100 or so pages you will find all of the information you require during your stay in Germany. Inside you will discover a full list of exhibitors and their stand numbers to guide you around the vast exhibition (see page 56) and help you plan who you wish to visit over the five days of the show. We also have in-depth information on many of the innovative new products that are being exhibited, in our Düsseldorf Exhibitors section, which starts on page 70, as well as all of the usual tube industry and product news from around the globe. The magazine is being distributed in several key locations at the event in Germany. We will be in the main entrance hall (EN03) and I will be based in Hall 4, Stand B23 all week. Do come and pick up some extra copies or just say hello. The entire INTRAS team will be there in force so it would be a pleasure to meet you or to say hello to some old friends at what will be my fourth Tube show in Germany and hopefully the best yet. Even though I am now a veteran of Tube Düsseldorf it never fails to impress me with its scale and oustanding levels of organisation, while still remaining a friendly and informal place to make priceless connections. Nothing else in the industry offers such a multitude of face-to-face international networking opportunites. With well in excess of 1,000 exhibiting companies, Tube once again broke its exhibitor record in 2016 (and has grown eight-fold since the first show in 1988). Last time several thousand extra visitors attended, so hopefully 2018 should be equally spectacular.

Enjoy the magazine and have a fantastic stay in Düsseldorf in what will hopefully prove to be a successful 2018 for the industry.

China’s shipments of plumbing products to exceed $20bn in 2021

Construction spending directly drives gains for plumbing products, as a wide variety of fixtures and fittings are installed in newly constructed buildings and as replacements in existing building construction activity in the large plumbing markets of North America and the Asia/Pacific region will help fuel overall sales advances. Rebounding construction spending in Europe will structures. Sustained growth in

Through to 2021, shipments of plumbing products in China are forecast to rise 5.2 per cent annually to $20.3bn, moderating from the 2011-2016 period. According to analyst Nick Cunningham, “Gains will be primarily driven by a growth in domestic demand for plumbing products.” China will maintain its large trade surplus in exports as it continues to be a significant supplier for the large plumbing markets of the United States and Western Europe. Global demand for plumbing fixtures and fittings is forecast to grow 4.7 per cent annually through to 2021, accelerating from the 2011-2016 period.

China is by far the largest exporter of plumbing products in the world, running a $3.4bn trade surplus for 2016. It is also the leading exporter of these products to the United States, which is the second largest consumer of plumbing products in the world. China also exports a substantial amount of plumbing fixtures and fittings to other countries in the Asia/Pacific region, including South Korea. China’s imports of plumbing products are fairly minimal. These and other trends are presented in Global Plumbing Fixtures & Fittings Market, 6 th Edition , a new study from The Freedonia Group.

ASTM standard for HDPE conduit updated The Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc (PPI) has commented on the updating of the ASTM F2160 standard, saying that, among other changes, the scope of the standard has now been expanded to include more SDR sizes and applications of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit. Schedule 80, ‘True-sized’ and SIDR dimensions. Typical applications include telecom, highway lighting, supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA) command and control, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and underground utilities, including wind power and solar energy farms. as the addition of SDR sizes and new applications. 11 dimensional tables are now consolidated into four for ease of use; the cell classification descriptions are harmonised with ASTM D3350; improved slow crack growth resistance (ESCR) is required; and pipe stiffness, compression and recovery requirements have been added.

“This is a significant update to the controlling ASTM standard used for HDPE conduit,” said Lance MacNevin, P Eng, director of engineering for the power and communications division (PCD) of PPI. He also explained that the effort to make the revisions to F2160 was led by PPI’s PCD, which resulted in significant improvements to the standard, such The revised ASTM F2160 standard helps ensure that HDPE conduit will stand up to tough installations and provide a long life

ASTM F2160 Standard Specification for Solid Wall High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Conduit Based on Controlled Outside Diameter (OD) is applicable to coilable HDPE conduit, duct and innerduct for the protection of fibre optic and power cables. It applies to HDPE conduit in IPS types SDR 9, SDR 11, SDR 13.5, DR 15.5, Schedule 40,

According to the PPI, the use of conduit and especially cable in conduit is growing. Its data shows that sales of HDPE underground cable increased in 2016 due to more fibre optic networks, additional utilities putting power lines underground and the increase in solar and wind farms. “Today’s conduit must be able to stand up to aggressive installation methods such as horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and provide years of underground life,” said Mr MacNevin. “Working with ASTM is one part of our division’s goal to establish consistent, high-quality performance of polyethylene pipe for all these growing conduit applications.” The publication TN-50 Guide to Specifying HDPE Conduit is available on the PPI website. Well-Sense wins ICoTA innovation award Well-Sense Technology has been awarded Intervention and Coiled Tubing Association (ICoTA) Europe’s Innovation Award in recognition of its FibreLine Intervention (FLI) tech- nology. The award was presented at the SPE ICoTA European Well Intervention Conference in Aberdeen, UK.

award is one of the most prestigious accolades in the industry and we are thrilled that our technology has been recognised by ICoTA as a revolutionary innovation. The ben- efits of FLI are vast but still growing, which is why it’s such a significant and disruptive technology. It offers distributed temperature, acoustic and pressure measurements to be captured over the length of a well, and in future we will offer additional features such as single point measurements including optical data, as well as improved access to deviated and horizontal wells.” Well-Sense is part of FrontRow Energy Technology Group. Well-Sense Technology Ltd – UK info@well-sense.co.uk FrontRow Energy Technology Group Ltd – UK

FLI presents a new approach to well intervention for data profiling, using a bare, disposable fibre optic line for distributed temperature and acoustic sensing. The fibre is dropped through the vertical section of a well using an innovative deployment tool and delivers real-time measurements, over its full length, for an extended period of time. FLI differs from traditional fibre line measurement devices as it is run into the well as bare line instead of encased within an intervention media such as wireline. Once it is run and has delivered the necessary data, it is disposed of into

the well. FLI is claimed to be the world’s only disposable fibre line intervention method, and provides time, space and cost savings. It can be deployed within a couple of hours of arriving on site and removes the need for complicated rig up and rig down procedures, the footprint taken up by spools of wireline and lubricators, additional personnel and associated non-productive time. Commenting on the award win, Well- Sense CEO Craig Feherty said, “This

Bibby-Ste-Croix earns Declare label for cast iron soil pipe and fittings

It’s through this kind of transparency that change for the better will occur.” Bibby is a manufacturer of cast iron soil pipe and fittings for storm and sanitary plumbing systems. The company states that specifiers should understand the importance of choosing products that do not off-gas toxins when burned.

“Transparency is an important ingredient to all Bibby’s products,” said Tom Leonard, president of Bibby-Ste-Croix. “The IFLI’s Declare programme offers an important opportunity for us to share our company’s industry leadership in products that contribute to healthy and environmentally safe design. Declare is designed to transform the way buildings are designed and built, making them safer for occupants and first responders.

Bibby-Ste-Croix has earned the Declare label from the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). The ILFI created Declare, a ‘nutrition label’ for products that gives a clear, informative method to disclose a product’s ingredients, to provide product manufacturers with the option for an additional level of confidence: third-party validation from trusted third- party verifiers.

London’s ‘Vase’ building enters final phase for Western Thermal Western Thermal, a specialist engineer in thermal and acoustic insulation, ventilation ductwork, trace heating and fire stopping, has entered into its final phase of thermal insulation and trace heating work for Number One Blackfriars, the London building known as ‘The Vase’. Thermal insulation and trace heating work is being completed by the company on a wide range of mechanical and public health systems throughout the 54-storey building and its basements. Western Thermal is working on the former Sainsbury’s Group headquarters and other core elements of the £140mn project, which spans 74,925m 2 and includes 274 homes, with commercial space at ground level. The company has also been working on the building’s new hotel, which is located on the lower three levels. Michael Slater, executive operations director of Western Thermal, said, “The Vase skyscraper is a rich addition to London’s skyline and adds to our fast-growing residential project portfolio. We have enjoyed our role in this iconic project. Our clients are asking increasingly for our thermal insulation offering in conjunction with our trace heating specialism. This trend toward a multi-disciplined approach to thermal engineering solutions in the construction industry is growing, and Western Thermal’s complementary nature between the different divisions is what makes the company stand out.” As a heating and ventilation insulation contractor, Western Thermal’s services meet the increasing demands for both economic and environmental efficiency, while meeting client specification and manufacturers’ recommendations, for both internal and external applications. The company has also pioneered specialist insulation jackets using the latest thermal materials, which are both removable and reusable. These include valve and flange jackets, bespoke plate heat exchanger jackets, and bespoke trace heated jackets, which are predominantly used in the food processing industry. Western Thermal’s trace heating division specialises in providing water at a constant temperature through a building’s pipes, and also protection from frost, which is now a commonplace function for thermal insulation solutions. The trace heating systems include self-limiting heating cables, flexible resistant series heating cables, and metal-sheathed resistant series heating cables. Saddle socket fusion machine Prisma Up 90 is a PP-R saddle socket fusion machine, designed to weld special PP-R joints such as collectors and reduced branches. The machine is composed of two assembly parts: a main jaws bracket and a frame with fitting carriage jaws. The main jaws bracket is light, for easy fixing on the main pipe. The fitting carriage jaws are designed to mount a driller with hole saw and fitting. The welding machine makes a perfect centring of drilling and socket weld, as well as the perfect alignment between pipe and fitting. The saddle sockets installed on a manual socket welder heat up the pipe and fitting surfaces. After the heating phase, the fitting is pushed inside the pipe by a screw system that ensures alignment. The working range for main pipe is Ø 40 to 250mm (or up to 630mm on request); and 20 to 90mm for branch pipe. Ritmo SpA – Italy

active components, which react exothermically with the sprayed base coat. The heat released from this stored chemical energy enhances diffusion and intermetallic formation with the basecoat, producing a sealed surface with a bespoke chemical gradient capable of resisting fireside corrosion and high-temperature oxidation in aggressive conditions such as biomass/ waste-fired advanced thermal power plants. The ER-Sealcoat system would result in improved performance through its functional gradient design and ability to close surface breaking porosity and seal the coating, as a result reducing direct and indirect processing costs compared to current industrial coating methods. Dr Spyros Kamnis, the research and development manager of Monitor

Surface engineering specialist Monitor Coatings Ltd has been co-funded by the UK innovation agency Innovate UK to work in collaboration with Cranfield University. The study, which started in September 2017, will use the process of exothermic reaction synthesis to modify low-cost sprayed metallic surface coatings. The need to reduce CO 2 emissions is pushing thermal power plants to use higher operating temperatures and biomass/waste-derived fuels, increasing the demand on heat exchanger tubes. The ER-Sealcoat project aims to develop a low-cost method of producing customisable coatings that can coat 3D geometries (internal and external) and protect against aggressive high- temperature environments. The seal coating is produced as a tailored slurry mix containing chemically

Shared location for Gastech and GPEX Gastech, an exhibition and conference for the international gas, LNG and energy industries, and GPEX (Global Power & Energy Exhibition), the new hub for the international power and energy community, will share the same location in Barcelona, Spain, later this year.

The co-location of the events, which will be held in adjoining halls in the Fira Gran Via from 17 to 20 September, supports the public-private drive towards a lower carbon environment, with the synergies between the two creating further opportunities for exhibitors, delegates and visitors. Gastech is a place for upstream, midstream and downstream gas and LNG professionals to convene and do business, and for more than 45 years has been at the forefront of the international gas and LNG markets. The GPEX exhibition and conference will focus on the transition of the electricity network, looking at the changing utility business model, as new technologies disrupt the centralised approach to power generation, transmission and distribution, with residential consumers and industrial and commercial energy users taking more control of their own energy production and consumption. It will bring together the global power and energy community, including governments, commercial and industrial power users, integrated energy companies, power producers and distributors, energy retailers and renewables, providing solutions for

Gastech governing body and programme director Gavin Sutcliffe said, “As the international energy focus moves towards lower carbon energy we are seeing a greater alignment between the gas and power industries. Gastech has a tradition of being the place where gas conversations are made, and the co-location of GPEX with Gastech facilitates an extension of that important energy transition debate. “Holding both events at the same location will allow 30,000 global energy professionals to access both Gastech and GPEX. This will bring together the gas and power communities who form the central core of the energy transition.” A call for papers is underway for both events, and industry professionals who are interested in speaking at the
