Exhibition double-header The month of September firmly switches its attention to exhibitions in Asia as two of the biggest in the area – wire China and wire Southeast Asia – feature in this issue of Wire & Cable ASIA . wire China is being staged from 4 to 7 September in Shanghai in its first staging since 2020. And if exhibitor interest is anything to go by, the appetite for exhibitions has reached a new level, with the original allocation of stands sold out some time ago. One of the most influential trade fairs in the region, wire China will feature industry-leading brands from the mainland, as state-of-the-art equipment, technologies and solutions will be on display to the domestic market. Demand was such that organisers Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co Ltd and Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute Co Ltd (SECRI) increased space in the Shanghai New International Expo Centre to accommodate burgeoning interest from home and abroad. Our coverage of wire China starts on page 54, and exhibitors and visitors alike can get their free copy of Wire & Cable ASIA and sister publication EuroWire from our stand at E5 C07.

Measuring technology specialist celebrates 50 th anniversary Sikora is looking back on its company history as it celebrates its 50 th anniversary this year. Since 1973, it has been developing and producing measuring and control technology to increase customers’ productivity.

Worldwide, approximately 1,800 devices are installed to ensure reliable quality control. The success of the X-ray measuring system for CV lines was the basis for the development of an advanced new series of X-ray devices for the measurement of wall thicknesses in core and sheathing lines. With the next generation of X-ray measuring systems for high-voltage cable

The first Sikora company building

In 1972, Harald Sikora invented a non-contact measuring device for the continuous measurement of cable insulation, wall thickness and concentricity during manufacturing. This technology became the basis for a start-up. On 1 November 1973, Mr Sikora founded his one-man business. An inductive measuring method for power cables that measures the position of the cable, the so-called sag, made the company well known in the high voltage cable industry. Laser technology, using line sensors to enable non-contact diameter measurement of wires and cables in the production process, also gained popularity. The company grew, and in 1979 changed its name to Sikora Industrieelektronik GmbH. In the 1990s, Sikora added many more products to its portfolio, including X-ray devices for measuring the wall thickness of three-layer medium, high and extra high voltage cables during production. These devices display the measuring results in fractions of a second and enable the operator to immediately make any needed adjustments. Metalube, a manufacturer and supplier of lubricants, will be showcasing its wire and cable products along with OCG, a specialist grease range for overhead power cables at wire Middle East Africa. Albert Molloy, global product manager – OCG and non-ferrous drawing lubricants, will be attending the event. With extensive knowledge and expertise in the wire and cable lubrication industry, Mr Molloy is looking forward to networking with fellow professionals and forging new partnerships. “We are thrilled to be part of wire Middle East Africa 2023,” said Mr Molloy. “This event provides an excellent platform for us to connect with industry leaders, share our latest innovations, and TBC

increase in employees were influential in the 2011 decision to construct a new building for R&D and service at the headquarters. At the same time, in line with the succession plan, the company was divided into two business segments: Sikora Holding GmbH & Co KG and Sikora AG. For the first time, Sikora launched a system for the inspection and sorting of plastic pellets, marking its entry into the plastics industry. In the tube, pipe and hose market, a millimetre wave-based measuring system for plastic pipes was introduced. The company continued to grow, and in 2019 opened a new four-storey building in Bremen, Germany, for production, R&D and other employees to have spacious and creative working environments. Within 50 years, the one-man operation has grown into a globally active manu- facturer and supplier of measurement, control and inspection technologies. With the help of its measuring systems, manufacturers can save plastic material, making production more economical and simultaneously protecting the environment. The company states that by using its measuring devices, up to five million fewer tons of carbon dioxide are released annually, because less plastic material is produced. “I am very proud and humbled by how the company has developed over the 50 years,” said Harald Sikora. “Then, as now, the secret of Sikora’s success is characterised by innovations that always keep the customer one step ahead in the market; our passion for the products and the consistent focus of all activities are on the customers.”

production, Sikora gained a market share of approximately 90 per cent worldwide in the power cable segment. In 2000, the company’s first subsidiary opened in the USA, followed by China and Italy. In the following years, numerous other international locations opened. In 2002, the decision was made to transform Sikora Industrieelektronik GmbH into the stock corporation Sikora AG. Since 2004, Sikora has applied the experience gained in the cable industry to the hose, pipe and tube market, where X-ray and laser technologies also became standard. In 2009, the company entered the glass fibre market with measuring devices for quality control in the drawing tower. understand the evolving demands of the market.” Metalube states that its participation in wire Middle East Africa reflects its ongo ing commitment to delivering solutions that surpass industry standards. The company is dedicated to providing envi ronmentally friendly and performance driven products that meet the needs of its global client base. Wire machinery manufacturer Lämneå Bruk, located among forests and lakes in Ljusfallshammar, central Sweden, has taken several measures for a greener future. The company was established in 1727 as an ironworks with a royal warrant, and started to specialise in the manufacture of machines for the wire industry in 1823. It designs, develops and manufactures all parts and components for its machines in-house, using advanced systems technology, to provide a wide range of machinery for different wire types, from small single machines to complete lines and entire factories. Lämneå Bruk has a long history of utilising hydraulic power – a clean and renewable energy source. The company operates its own hydropower station, sourced from the lake next to its facility. This was the primary reason the company built its premises in this location more than 200 years ago. Sikora among Germany’s innovation leaders Bremen-based Sikora AG has been awarded as “Germany’s innovation leader 2023” by the FAZ-Institut. For the study, the worldwide patent applications of companies operating in Germany were analysed. As a measuring and control technology company, Sikora is again among the winners this year. The survey evaluated patent families from more than 500 technology and knowledge areas, looking at not only the number of patents submitted in the last ten years, but also their relevance. Index points were given for the companies analysed, taking into account whether the invention influences other inventions and how often a patent cites another patent family. The less often this is the case, the more innovative the patent is perceived. Sikora had already been awarded as innovation leader last year, and can now consolidate its success. In addition to the renewed award in the “Measuring, testing” category, Sikora convinced in “Processing of plastics”. Each year, Sikora invests around ten per cent of its turnover in the research and development of new measuring and control technology, as well as inspection, analysis and sorting systems for quality control during the production of wires and cables, hoses, tubes, pipes and sheets, optical fibres or plastics. Individual cable carrier system for hydropower plant

The project, for hydroelectric power plant company CNR, included the largest travel length that Kabelschlepp France has ever implemented. The hydroelectric power plant was to be equipped with the new cable carrier system as part of maintenance work. “It guides the power, communication and sensor cables to the valve,” explained

An international team at Kabelschlepp France has implemented a robust cable carrier system for the safety valve at the Châteauneuf du Rhône hydroelectric power plant in the South of France. The purpose of the valve, which moves across the entire power plant, is to prevent over-speed of the turbines. In an emergency, a heavy barrier is used to block the ingress of water.

than the rail, as there is no risk of bad contacts. The extreme conditions at the site required a robust design. Installed on the retaining dam, the cable carrier system is exposed to high winds, and optimum functioning has to be ensured even at temperatures below freezing in winter. In addition to the RSC MC0950 cable carrier, the solution included all required cables, the guide channel, floating TKFMD drivers including driver arm, the substructure/wall brackets and the roof system.

AWI extends employee ownership scheme

Two of AWI’s manufacturing staff, Stuart Hardwick (left) and Daniel Holyhead

All staff at a UK manufacturer of round, flat and profile wire are now shareholders, following a recently completed management buy-out (MBO). Alloy Wire International (AWI), which has two sites in the West Midlands and Yorkshire, was purchased by directors Tom Mander, Andrew Du Plessis and Adam Shaw in January, with the new management team immediately extend- ing the firm’s employee ownership scheme to include all 33 employees. This has been a long-term commitment that first started in 1999, when Bill Graham fulfilled a 23-year vision of putting staff at the heart of the business by giving them share ownership and the same opportunity to benefit from its growth. Mander commented, “Bill’s decision at the start of the millennium gave us a distinctive edge to our business and this was something Mark Venables took on when he led the previous MBO in 2013. “Working our way up in the business, we have seen first-hand what the employee ownership scheme has meant and the sense of commitment and pride it brings. It was a natural decision to use our own MBO to include the new members of staff and get all 33 employees on the same scheme.” Mr Mander added, “There’s a real togetherness across the business, with employees also enjoying a renewed profit share, dividends and [health insurance] membership. Customers even comment about the family atmosphere when they visit.” Alloy Wire International manufactures round, flat and profile wire in more than 60 exotic alloys, such as Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, Nimonic and Waspaloy. Founded in 1946 by John Stockdale in an old ambulance station, the firm now operates across 15 different market sectors and, despite global supply chain disruption, is still delivering material in four weeks from the order being placed. Towards a decarbonised future Tenova, a developer and provider of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, will supply an electric arc furnace (EAF) equipped with Consteel® and electromagnetic stirrer Consteerrer® to POSCO for its Gwangyang plant in South Korea. The South Korean steelmaker, the sixth largest worldwide, is pursuing the decarbonisation of its steel products, which mostly include grades traditionally produced via the integral cycle only, such as interstitial-free grades for the automotive industries and the steel grades required by providers of electrical mobility and green power generation solutions.

towards electric steelmaking based on EAF. Following a two year process of co-engineering and competitive comparison, POSCO has selected Tenova’s equipment: a full-platform EAF capable of tapping 280t of liquid steel, equipped with the Consteel continuous scrap charging system and the Consterrer electromagnetic stirring system – jointly patented by Tenova and ABB. The new EAF will be designed to match the steelmaker’s needs for quality, productivity and efficiency, and will be equipped with a full set of robotic applications and enhanced safety solu tions, including the Safe+ EAF water leakage detection system to dispel concerns about EAF safety and user-friendliness. “Besides requiring a radical re-thinking of the production pro cess, an EAF of this size and power is an entirely new machine for most integral steelmakers and may understandably scare away engineers who are accustomed to the relative quietness of most BOF converters halls,” said Paolo Stagnoli, sales direc tor at Tenova for EAF and LF. “We are committed to become a long-standing partner of POSCO as we build together a new environmentally friendly and record-breaking furnace.” The new EAF’s product will be merged with the stream of liquid iron produced by the existing blast furnaces. It will be installed in a dedicated new section of the plant and is scheduled to enter production by the end of 2025. Tenova www.tenova.com

A key part of this transformation towards sustainability consists of the gradual conversion from the BF-BOF route
