Towards a decarbonised future Tenova, a developer and provider of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, will supply an electric arc furnace (EAF) equipped with Consteel® and electromagnetic stirrer Consteerrer® to POSCO for its Gwangyang plant in South Korea. The South Korean steelmaker, the sixth largest worldwide, is pursuing the decarbonisation of its steel products, which mostly include grades traditionally produced via the integral cycle only, such as interstitial-free grades for the automotive industries and the steel grades required by providers of electrical mobility and green power generation solutions.

towards electric steelmaking based on EAF. Following a two year process of co-engineering and competitive comparison, POSCO has selected Tenova’s equipment: a full-platform EAF capable of tapping 280t of liquid steel, equipped with the Consteel continuous scrap charging system and the Consterrer electromagnetic stirring system – jointly patented by Tenova and ABB. The new EAF will be designed to match the steelmaker’s needs for quality, productivity and efficiency, and will be equipped with a full set of robotic applications and enhanced safety solu tions, including the Safe+ EAF water leakage detection system to dispel concerns about EAF safety and user-friendliness. “Besides requiring a radical re-thinking of the production pro cess, an EAF of this size and power is an entirely new machine for most integral steelmakers and may understandably scare away engineers who are accustomed to the relative quietness of most BOF converters halls,” said Paolo Stagnoli, sales direc tor at Tenova for EAF and LF. “We are committed to become a long-standing partner of POSCO as we build together a new environmentally friendly and record-breaking furnace.” The new EAF’s product will be merged with the stream of liquid iron produced by the existing blast furnaces. It will be installed in a dedicated new section of the plant and is scheduled to enter production by the end of 2025. Tenova www.tenova.com

A key part of this transformation towards sustainability consists of the gradual conversion from the BF-BOF route

Altana acquires stake in technology start-up Saralon The Elantas division of speciality chemicals group Altana has entered into an innovation partnership with Saralon in the growth market of printed electronics. Altana has acquired a stake in Saralon – a young company that specialises in the development of inks for printing electronics. Saralon also offers prefabricated electronic components that enable printers to quickly build capacities for printing electronics. The parties have agreed not to disclose the investment sum. Since its founding in Chemnitz, Germany, in 2015, Saralon has continued to expand its portfolio of solutions for printed electronics. “With its conductive inks and electronic components, Saralon has developed innovative and sustainable solutions that are already in use today,” said Dr Gerd Krämer, chief technology officer at Elantas. “With its years of market experience, Elantas supports Saralon in the further development of its products and their introduction to the printed electronics market across the board.” Saralon’s functional inks can already be used to print batteries, for example. The products are also utilised in the logistics industry. Printed electronic sensors in packaging can measure humidity, temperature and pressure, among other things, enabling efficient and sustainable monitoring. “With Altana, we are gaining a strong and innovative partner for our business model who will help us fully tap the growth potential of our products,” said Dr Moazzam Ali, CEO and co-founder of Saralon.
