Solar collaboration for Moroccan power plant

The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) said the project, which will have a total installed capacity of 800MW, is the world’s first advanced hybridisation of concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) technologies. Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said: “It is now cheaper to build renewable energy power plants than those based on fossil fuels, and this is increasingly evident in the region.” Masdar – UAE Website : www.masdar.ae Results in line with expectations Financial results in line with lower sales figures of the previous two years were approved at a meeting of Contin- uus-Properzi’s board in May this year. The results are not overly surprising as it is a technology-driven machinery manufacturer with delivery times around 12 months in the future.

ABU Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) said its consortium, comprising EDF Renewables and Green of Africa, has been awarded the tender for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Noor Midelt Phase One solar power plant. The 800MW plant will be located 20km north of the town of Midelt in central Morocco, between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. Construction on the project is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2019, with energy delivered to the grid in 2022. Noor Midelt Phase One is the third project collaboration between EDF Renewables and Masdar. EDF Renewables is a partner in Shua’a Energy 2, the joint venture led by Dubai Electricity Water Authority (DEWA) developing the 800MW third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai. The first 200MW stage was inaugurated in April 2018. The two companies are also partners in the recently announced Dumat Al Jandal wind farm, which at 400MW will be Saudi Arabia’s first wind energy project, and the Middle East and North African (MENA) region’s largest.

Bridging the cable industry’s skills gap IN 1982, the total number of jobs in UK manufacturing was nearly a quarter of the working population. Fast forward to 2002 and this figure dropped to 12 per cent. Recent statistics show that the figure has now dropped to eight per cent. This is not unique to the UK – all industrialised countries, with the exception of Brazil, have seen manufacturing jobs decline since the 1990s.

Over the last 20 years in particular, factories have automated many tasks on the production line, which have to some extent replaced jobs. Compared to the 1980s, there are three million fewer jobs in manufacturing in the UK. Government focus turned to industries which were seeing an increase in the value of GDP output. As a result, funding for and interest in STEM education dropped. This perfect storm led to only one outcome – the creation of a workforce with a stronger interest in other sectors. In recent years, there has been a renewed recognition of the importance of STEM to the national economy. The government’s industrial strategy has at its core a number of policies to help manufacturing ‘build a Britain fit for the future’. At the same time, the Industry 4.0 revolution has led to an evolution of employment in manufacturing.

Success on all fronts for Harting

TWENTY five years ago, the Harting Technology Group opened a subsidiary in Prague, Czech Republic, that has since enjoyed a successful development. This was a point that chairman Philip Harting emphasised during a gala evening celebrated with customers, employees and representatives of the German-Czech Board of Trade in Palais Martinic: “The decision to locate in the Czech Republic was a thoroughly worthwhile step.” “It quickly became clear to us, after the political changes and upheavals, that this region was a promising market for the future. It was therefore the obvious decision to strengthen our activities in Eastern Europe and, in the course of our internationalisation, which began in 1979, to gain a foothold here as well,” added Mr Harting. ESTABLISHED in 1929, Medek & Schörner has been producing cable marking machines and optical fibre coating lines for decades. Due to its close relations within the cable and wire industry, the company is always in touch with new requirements, which are rapidly converted into production concepts. This enables continuous further development. The company not only offers quality and high-performance machines, but its employees are also going a step further to provide reliable customer support and a high standard of after-sales service. Nearly all mechanical, electrical and electronic components are manufactured in-house, making Medek & Schörner largely independent of external suppliers and able to react to customer requirements quickly and efficiently. The company guarantees unlimited availability of spare parts for all its machines, including older and smaller models. The product range begins with simple coding machines and extends all the way to fully automated high-speed production lines using cutting-edge technology. Thanks to the modular construction, the capacity of any system can be increased quickly and significantly by adding or exchanging individual components, even if a system has already been in operation for several years. A German wholly owned subsidiary was established with the name Fortek GmbH. Initially, the office focused on Western Europe only and consisted of one salesman and one person in customer service. The company provided localised service to European customers – taking care of import procedures which were more complicated at the time, clearing the goods into the common market, and trans-shipping to the end customer. It would also invoice in the local currency, and provide localised inventory and general sales and support for the market. The strategy was successful and Fortek

Minimising die wear also affects the overall cost of production in regards to how much raw material is being given away when the die wears. Nano DCD dies wear very little and not in the traditional manner that carbide and polycrystalline diamond dies wear. Their failure occurs with sudden delamination of the diamond coating, minimising the amount of extra material being given away to the end customer. Other stranding die options available from FWWD are tungsten carbide dies, solid PCD dies and tungsten carbide split dies. Fort Wayne Wire Die has designed and manufactured high-precision wire drawing dies and hard-material components for the wire and cable industry for more than 80 years. Fort Wayne Wire Die Inc – USA Website : www.fwwd.com

FORT Wayne Wire Die has introduced a new product to its family of stranding die options, Nano Diamond Coated Dies (DCD), which is a solution for stranding, bunching and compacting applications of conductor cable. Nano DCDs offer a better surface finish, reduced die resistance, minimum die wear and longer life compared to tungsten carbide. DCDs are available in sizes up to 100mm (3.9"). Nano DCD dies are tungsten carbide dies coated with a 30-micron thick layer of nanocystalline diamond particles, which after polishing become extremely smooth compared to carbide or polycrystalline diamond dies. This highly polished die surface minimises die pull for improved energy efficiency in stranding machines, impacts safety concerns by reducing fines and dust generation, and creates

a smoother cable surface finish for better conductivity. When compared to carbide dies, Nano DCD die life is about ten times or more while the die cost is only three to five times, suggesting a strong value proposition for cable manufacturers to consider when purchasing stranding dies. ❍ DCD die launched by Fort Wayne

Better measurement of electrical conductors

After several years of research, AESA Cortaillod has developed a new method for current injection. Rather than injecting it transversely, current is injected axially. In this way, all conductors are in direct contact with the current source, minimising the contact resistance effect between wires. The reliability of the results is significantly improved. For insulated conductors, to reduce the skin effect, conductors with large cross sections are often insulated. Radial current injection does not allow this type of conductor to be measured. The same applies to waterproofing conductors. Therefore, axial injection opens up new possibilities for these types of conductors. Aesa-Cortaillod – France Website : www.aesa-cortaillod.com

THE new, patented method of measuring the linear resistance of electrical conductors by axial current injection provides cable manufacturers with an important advance in their measurement of metal conductors. It pushes back the limits of traditional methods while providing an improve- ment in measurement reliability. The measurement of the linear resistance of electrical conductors has always been problematic. The achievement of reliable results depends mainly on the conductor cross-section and the contact resistance between the different wires. The problem is even worse when using conductors such as aluminium because the seemingly instantaneous oxidation of the conductor significantly increases the contact resistance. To obtain a relatively homogeneous current distribution in the conductor, the injection points were moved away from the voltage knives, sometimes by

several metres. However, this solution has disadvantages both in the handling of samples and in the wasted material cost. ❍ A new, patented method of measuring the linear resistance of electrical conductors
