Interview – Dmitry Goroshkov Severstal’s director, sales and business development, energy sector

Russia is also our primary market, and in 2019 we held a 17.4 per cent share of the large-diameter pipe (LDP) market, equivalent to 338.5 thousand tonnes. Since 2019, I have been leading Severstal’s campaign to develop sales in European markets, where we see huge potential to expand. What makes the European pipe market attractive to Severstal? We see a lot of opportunities on the European pipe market. The European market is a region with exciting current and future prospects for pipeline construction and liquified natural gas; while the EU has progressive climate change policies, natural gas is currently viewed by the EU as an important ‘bridging fuel’ in the energy transition. It is displacing coal’s role in baseload electricity generation and is also a key fuel for meeting spikes in demand, therefore there will be significant demand for the fuel and its infrastructure for many years to come.

“While we are already a major pipe supplier to our domestic market in Russia, it is our ambition to become one of the leading suppliers in Europe in the coming years. We are already seeing progress and we hope to benefit from increasing activity in the natural gas market. I am really excited to be part of this journey.”

Can you tell us about your role at Severstal?

I am director of sales and business development for the energy sector at Severstal, a fully vertically integrated steel producer focused primarily on meeting the needs of customers in three target segments: construction, machinery and energy. We are a leading manufacturer of large diameter longitudinal seam (LSAW) pipe in Russia, with a production capacity of about 600 thousand tonnes per year.

How is Severstal’s offer differentiated from peers in the EU market? There are three main factors that set us apart from other companies. The first is our cost efficiency. We are the most cost-efficient Russian steel supplier to international companies. This is largely helped by our position as a vertically integrated company, which means we have control over the whole of our production chain, from raw materials to finished pipe products, in addition to the strategic location of our operations – our main large-diameter LSAW production facility is based right beside the port facilities in St Petersburg, Russia, enabling us to export to Europe conveniently and efficiently. The second factor is our product offerings; we offer product packages, meaning we offer our clients in the energy sector not only large diameter LSAW pipes, but also the steel products they might need for their projects – such as fittings, ball-valves and other flat and long steel products. The third differentiating factor is our ability to provide customised solutions, product innovations and advanced engineering throughout the value chain; from steel to finished products. We can modify our product specifications to fit our customers’ needs and we can do this right from the start of the manufacturing process. This enables us to provide our customers with the best fit solutions for their projects. Severstal has its own R&D department that can develops unique, tailor-made products and value-added engineering solutions based on specific client requirements. In 2019-2020, the company sold approximately 150 thousand tonnes of highly innovative products to customers in the energy industry. What kind of products are you hoping to sell to the EU market – will they include high-tech products or tailored customer solutions? We have a broad product offering, from a range of dimensions and materials and grades for LSAW pipe, to many different products for LNG transportation and use such as storage tanks, production facilities and ships,

and also equipment for factories, including a particularly significant item – coil-wound heat exchangers, which we produce at our joint venture with Linde in St Petersburg. We are open to selling all these products on the European market. In terms of high-tech solutions, our R&D department also develops tailor-made products and engineering solutions. The R&D department integrates Industry 4.0 tools into its work, such as computer modelling (the ability to test product properties using a mathematical model) and prototyping (product sampling), among others. What kind of demand is Severstal seeing from energy majors in the EU market in terms of their supply chain? Energy majors are generally seeking products of the highest quality, which comply fully to the technical specifications of their projects and are delivered in a timely manner, adhering to all contractual conditions, which is something Severstal excels at. We also understand that major oil and gas companies are increasingly concerned about their environmental impact, and we are also working with solutions for this. For example – we are aware that methane leakage from pipes carrying natural gas is a major contributor to

44

TUBE PRODUCTS INTERNATIONAL January 2021

www.read-tpi.com

climate change; due to our product quality and wide- ranging product offerings and partnerships, we are able to minimise methane leakage levels in the pipe we supply, contributing to reduction of natural gas’ harmful effects on the environment. New solutions, such as the use of fibre optics along a pipeline to monitor for leaks, are exactly the sort of technologies we hope to offer customers in the future. Is Severstal already supplying to any energy majors or have you participated in any major projects in Europe? Absolutely, we already have a good deal of experience supplying to major pipeline infrastructure projects. For example, Severstal has supplied LSAW for projects such as the Turkstream export offshore gas pipeline, where Gazprom transports gas from Russia to countries such as Bulgaria and North Macedonia. Severstal supplied over 260 thousand tonnes of LDP for the project, including concrete- coated pipe. We also produced and delivered over 11 thousand tons of large diameter pipe for Eustream AS, the European Poland-Slovakia interconnector gas pipeline, as well as the Bulgartransgaz project – a gas transmission network across Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria. Is Severstal involved in any partnerships in Europe already? We are pleased to have several European partners. In Russia, we have a distribution agreement with leading Italian valve producer Valvitalia to be the sole distributor of its products and solutions to Russian companies. This partnership will provide Russian customers in the energy sector with a broad product offering, based on the expertise and experience of both companies. At the same time, we are always open to new opportunities and partnerships. We already have joint ventures with a

number of European companies, including Linde (Germany), Tenaris (Italy), Air Liquide (France), and Windar Renovables (Spain); all of these JVs are located in Russia, but we are very keen to expand both our network of partners and our geographical reach. What is next for Severstal? What is your ambition for Severstal’s pipe offering? Our energy sector focus is an important part of Severstal’s growth strategy. While we are already a major pipe supplier to our domestic market in Russia, it is our ambition to become one of the leading suppliers in Europe in the coming years. We are already seeing progress – our customer-oriented approach and value offerings are gaining recognition in Europe and we hope to benefit from increasing activity in the natural gas market. I am really excited to be part of this journey.

Eaton’s CMT expands CMA advanced mobile valve family

Power management company Eaton has launched the CMT mobile valve section, a streamlined new section option for the CMA advanced mobile valve. With the capability to control two bidirectional services from one section – an industry first the company claims – the CMT valve section increases design flexibility and reduces CMA valve bank size, weight and overall system cost. Like the existing CMA mobile valve section, the new CMT section is

software-configurable and features CAN communication, on-board sensors, digital flow-sharing and electronic load-sensing to provide precise flow control and high responsiveness. While the CMA section features independent metering, the CMT section utilises the twin-spool architecture to control two services instead of one. This can reduce the total number of sections needed in a valve bank by as much as 50 per cent, minimising valve-bank size and weight. CMTmobile valve sections are stackable with CMA sections, which increases the design flexibility of the CMA advanced mobile valve. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can optimise the valve for all vehicle requirements by specifying sophisticated CMA sections for services that demand superior precision and control and streamlined CMT sections for standard machine functions. The availability of two

Jakob Antriebstechnik introduces the innovative Simple-Flex tube series

The Simple-Flex series from Jakob Antriebstechnik is an innovative distance coupling that can be manufactured up to 6m in length and requires no additional intermediate support.

A composite tube with a multi-layer, angle-specific fibre configuration allows for a particularly simple design that works without the otherwise necessary coupling compensation elements on

the two tube ends. With elaborate simulation calculations and test series, this composite tubing has been developed, which has both flexural flexibility and high torsional rigidity. The very low weight and the associated low moments of inertia can guarantee the highest operating speeds and torques with excellent smoothness, without neglecting the compensation of shaft misalignments. Simple-Flex is available with either rotationally symmetrical cone clamping ring clamping or with assembly-friendly splitted hub design. The two available composite pipe sizes cover torque

ranges up to 1000Nm. Jakob Antriebstechnik www.jakobantriebstechnik.de

Tube irrigation technology in agriculture: how new technology can help to overcome challenges By Mark Trapolino, agriculture and irrigation market manager, Krohne Inc

As the world’s population continues to increase at a rapid pace, more food and water will be needed to sustain humanity. In the past 50 years, we have tripled our need for water and food, and there are no signs of this trend slowing down. As a result of these conditions, smart, innovative agricultural practices are needed now more than ever. Technology can, and already does, aid agriculture in innumerable ways. One prominent part of agriculture that can use technological innovation to increase efficiency and effectiveness is irrigation.

Irrigation is the method in which a controlled amount of water is supplied to plants at regular intervals for agriculture. It is used to assist in the growing of agricultural crops, maintenance of landscapes, and revegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of inadequate rainfall. Additionally, irrigation also has a few other uses in crop production, which include protecting plants against frost, suppressing weed growth in grain fields and preventing soil consolidation. Irrigation systems are also used for dust suppression, disposal of sewage, and in mining. Irrigation is often studied together with drainage, which is the natural or artificial removal of surface and sub-surface water from a given area. Irrigation has been a central feature of agriculture for over 5,000 years and is the product of many cultures. Historically, it was the basis for economies and societies across the globe, from Asia to the Southwestern US. Agricultural irrigation accounts for roughly 80 per cent of the ground and surface water used in the US, and could account for up to 90 per cent of water used in western states. Some 53.5 billion gallons of groundwater are used daily for agricultural irrigation from 475,796 wells. Irrigated agriculture is an indispensable part of the US economy as it contributes significantly to the value of US agricultural crop production, as well as supporting livestock and poultry production through irrigated animal forage and feed crops. (United States Geological Survey, 2015) However, all of this freshwater use in irrigation is wasteful. Worldwide, agriculture accounts for 70 per cent of all water consumption, compared to 20 per cent for industry and 10 per cent for domestic use (http://www.worldometers.info/water). Roughly 15-35 per cent of irrigation withdrawals are estimated to be unsustainable, and the agriculture industry wastes 60 per cent or 396 trillion gallons, of the 660 trillion gallons of water it uses each year. Water measurement The key to a sustainable agriculture looking to the future is in water use, and it is clear that the current standards in place are

52

much too wasteful to rely on. Water metering and measuring technology is at the heart of this issue, but there is not only one method or technology used to measure water flow in irrigation systems. In irrigation systems, water used to irrigate land is carried under pressure to its destination via pipes. Flow occurs in a pipeline when a pressure difference exists between the two ends of the pipe. The rate or discharge that occurs depends mainly on the difference in pressure that exists from the inlet of the pipe to the outlet, the friction or resistance to flow caused by the pipe’s length, pipe roughness, bends, restrictions, changes in pipe shape and size, and the cross-sectional area of the pipe.

Flow velocity through pipes under ideal conditions (top row), and disturbed flow conditions (bottom row

A well-used Krohne Waterflux 3070 magnetic water meter in the field

Most flow measurement devices measure flow, or discharge, indirectly. These devices are commonly classified into two types – those that measure velocity and those that measure pressure. Regardless of the type of device, the pressure or velocity is measured, and then charts, tables, or equations are used to obtain the discharge, or flow. Some water measuring devices that use measurement of pressure to determine discharge include weirs, flumes, orifices and Venturi meters. Other devices that work differently from those that measure water pressure include acoustic water metres, magnetic water meters, pitot tubes, and rotametres. All of these non-pressure-based devices work differently to determine water discharge.

In some acoustic or ultrasonic meters such as transit time meters, the velocity of sound pulses in the direction of water flow is compared to the velocity of sound pulses opposite to the direction of flow to determine the mean velocity and, thus, discharge. With Doppler acoustic meters, sound pulses are reflected from moving particles within the water mass, like radar. Pitot tubes measure water flow by relating velocity pressure, V2/2g, to discharge, and rotametres do via flow indicators suspended in tapered sections of pipe. Lastly, in magnetic meters, flowing water acts like a moving electrical conductor passing through a magnetic field to produce a voltage that is proportional to discharge. Ideally, a water meter is accurate, reliable, efficient, and compatible with the rest of the irrigation system it is part of. Accuracy is an

life and its connection box is made from stainless steel. In addition, the Waterflux 3070 features no internal moving parts, making it virtually maintenance-free. • Efficient : Installing the Waterflux 3070 is quick and easy. It has no inlet or outlet installation requirements, features plug-and-play connectors, and can be installed virtually anywhere. Technologically compatible: the Waterflux 3070 is fully data logging compatible and features multiple power and converter options. To solve the water-use problems currently affecting the agricultural industry, better water metering technology is a necessity. Among the many types of water metering devices, innovative magnetic metering devices like Krohne’s Waterflux 3070 check all the boxes for ideal water metering technology, and are showing the way towards more efficient and effective water use in agricultural irrigation applications.

obvious characteristic. Water needs to be accurately metered to avoid waste. Water meters need to be reliable for a similar reason – if the meter is breaking down frequently, there is no accurate way to measure water usage, which will result in waste. Water meters need to be efficient in terms of their installation and operation. Special requirements for installation only result in wasted time during the installation process, which, in a general sense, results in more wasted. Lastly, a good water meter is compatible with its irrigation or crop control system. Todays integrated irrigation and crop control systems vary in communication requirements. Using a meter that is compatible with data logging and telemetry software is hugely important in terms of the meter’s accuracy, operation, and maintenance. Krohne’s Waterflux 3070 meter Of all the types of water meters listed above, magnetic meters are innovating more than others, and are more completely meeting the requirements for an ideal water meter. One magnetic meter in particular that is perfect for irrigation applications in agriculture is Krohne’s Waterflux 3070 magnetic meter. The Waterflux 3070 is a battery powered all-in-one (integrated flow, pressure, and temperature measurements) electromagnetic water meter. Unlike mechanical water meters, the Waterflux 3070 is maintenance-free and offers a much larger turn down ratio (1000:1). Its measuring tube with a rectangular and reduced cross-section enables a stable measurement even at low flow rates. Due to the optimised flow profile, the Waterflux 3070 can be installed virtually anywhere without straight inlet or outlet runs – behind pipe bends, slide valves or a reduction in the pipe. Even burial installation or use in flooded areas is possible. The Waterflux 3070 has several key advantages for agricultural applications due to its rectangular reduced bore design. This unique reduced bore design acts as its own internal flow straightener, and also results in the meter creating a smaller magnetic field, which has less power consumption, extending battery power life to up to 15 years with a KROHNE dual battery pack. The rectangular bore of the Waterflux 3070 is also effective in that it contracts flow profile disturbances, has an ideal coil arrangement for a strong and homogenous magnetic field, results in a doubled mean flow velocity, and enables a measurement that is stable and independent of the flow profile. • Accurate : it features bi-directional flow measurement over a wide dynamic range and its unique rectangular sensor design gives good low-flow performance. • Reliable : the Waterflux 3070 features a robust construction, with its sensor tube coated in Rilsan ® to guarantee a long To conclude the Waterflux 3070 is:
