Hot on theheels of America sorting its financial woes – or at least reaching agreement on its debt ceiling – Europe’s financial power masters have done the same, sending a wave of relief not only across the continent, but US and Asia. On the day the deal was completed (Thursday, 27th October) stocks, futures and company shares shot in an upwards direction, reaching their highest point in the last three months. In a nutshell (it apparently took 90 meetings over ten hours to arrive at this point!) the European emergency bail-out fund has been quadrupled to €1 trillion ($1.4 trilliion) and half the Greek debt has been written off. Since 2009 the instability of the Euro has sent shockwaves across the globe, with American companies and economy feeling the uncertainty from the lack of faith in the European currency. Let us all hope that this is the start of the end for the doubts and allows companies worldwide to plan and prosper for a brighter 2012. David Bell Editor

Making the switch to smoothwall

Featuring a patented microcell dielectric and foam-filled inner conductor, Heliax FXL is a lighter, stronger and more flexible cable that offers lower freight costs and minimal maintenance. Attenuation is lower, so data moves faster and more efficiently across networks, and the system is de- signed for high weather resistance. Competition for subscribers is intense in the rapidly expanding Indian wireless marketplace, raising the stakes for operators as they balance the need for high performance while keeping costs low. The smoothwall Heliax FXL cable recently won the Golden Award for Green Communication Energy-Efficient Technology in China. Compared with traditional all-copper cables it requires less electric power and fuel to manufacture and transport and, with its aluminum outer conductor, it is a less attractive target for the thefts that have been affecting network components made entirely from copper.

India’s third largest wireless operator, Idea Cellular, has chosen CommScope’s smoothwall RF feeder coaxial cable, replacing most of the traditional corrugated copper cabling in its network. In choosing Heliax TM FXL smooth- wall cable, Idea will utilize the coaxial cable in its base station sites in India. The FXL smoothwall cable, already installed in more than 100,000 sites throughout In- dia and in use around the world, is said to deliver a new level of benefits in wireless network per- formance and reliability com- pared to its corrugated copper predecessor Heliax VXL.

FastWeb, one of Italy’s largest broadband providers, is deploying the country’s first 100 Gigabit per second (100G) per channel optical fiber network between Milan and Rome. Using Nokia Siemens Networks’ technology, the network will be capable of simultaneously transmitting up to 40 wavelengths of light, each carrying data at 100G. This will allow a total data transfer speed of up to 4 Terabits per second. The new 100G link will be operational in the last quarter of 2011. Its deployment will ensure an improved experience for people using the connection, with greater bandwidth and lower latency, or delay, in data transmission. (A 2008 report by TABB Group showed that a lower latency advantage of 1 millisecond (ms) is equivalent to more than $100 million in financial transaction revenue per year for NYSE Euronext trading partners.) First 100G optical network for Italy

“The transition to a 100G channel optical transport network will enable us to fulfill the demands of our existing users as well as attract new subscribers by offering differentiated services,” said Mario Mella, chief technology officer, FastWeb. Nokia Siemens Networks’ dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution comprises the hiT 7300 optical network platform and its network management system for planning and automation. The hiT 7300 platform will ensure cost savings by either adopting no dispersion compensation (DCM-free) techniques on new fiber or simply by utilizing the operator’s installed DWDM network infrastructure. The latter option enables operators to benefit from higher capacity without the costly and time-consuming fiber measurement required by conventional systems.

Green power for Portugal

A recent report by market research company CRU is suggesting that replacement of copper with other materials may reduce demand for the metal by about 500,000 metric tons this year. Use of plastic for tube production, aluminum for high-voltage energy cables and fiber optics for communications cabling is driving substitution, CRU’s non-ferrous metals group manager Paul Robinson said, estimating that aluminum may replace about 250,000 tons of copper. Copper more than tripled in two years through 2010 on the London Metal Exchange, exceeding aluminum’s 60 percent climb. Concern that copper supply would fall short of demand helped prices to reach a record high of $10,190 a ton in February 2011, discouraging consumption of the metal. Lost copper demand “constrains longer-term growth rates,” Mr Robinson said. “As copper loses these sectors, it also loses any growth potential in the future.” Replacing copper may reduce usage by 500,000 tons

Enel Green Power Espana has begun operation on the 12MW Alto do Marco wind farm in Portugal. The wind power plant comprises six 2MW turbines for a total installed capacity of 12MW. The new wind plant will generate approximately 32 million kWh, enough to meet the needs of around 12,000 households, as well as avoiding the emission of around 24,000 metric tons of CO 2 , per year. Enel Green Power claims the company’s total installed capacity in Portugal now exceeds 191MW, of which 155 MW are generated from wind. Enel Green Power Espana is a subsidiary of Enel Green Power, a developer of energy generation from renewable sources.

Good news for Greece

CTC Marine laying down deals

The cable-laying firm CTC Marine has secured orders worth over £20 million from the UK and overseas markets. The Darlington UK-based company has won work on a renewable energy venture in Germany, projects in Korea and Australia and a sub-sea scheme in Aberdeen. Most recently, it has also won an order from SBM France to install and bury cables off the coast of West Africa. CTC has teamed up with Teesside manufacturer JDR Cables to carry out the work involved in the SBM contract. JDR has made the power cable at its Hartlepool site and CTC has been commissioned to transport it to the Anguille oil field near West Africa. CTC said the work would not create new jobs on Teesside, but will safeguard existing roles at the company. The firm is now eyeing further work from the growing renewable energy market.

Photovoltaic system integrator Phoenix Solar is constructing a 1.1MWp solar power plant in Central Macedonia, Greece. Phoenix Solar’s Greece subsidiary Phoenix Solar EPE has secured an EPC contract for the solar facility from US-based Sol Power, Production and Trading Electricity. Phoenix Solar has agreed to deliver modules, inverters and components as well as design and construct the solar park in Kolindros. Construction work began in September and grid connection was scheduled before the end of October. The power plant consists of nearly 5,600 crystalline solar modules that will deliver around 1,400MWh of environmentally compatible electricity annually. The electricity generated by the solar modules is enough to power 450 average Greek households and avoid about 1,600 tons of CO 2 emissions a year. Phoenix Solar in Greece general manager Christos Protogeropoulos said the financing by Cypriot investors, together with German expertise, are the ideal preconditions for new green investments in Greece. “The country is currently searching for foreign investors to help overcome the difficult economic situation,” he added.

Beta LaserMike will be demonstrating a comprehensive range of non-contact measurement systems, including the patent pending LayScan measurement system for accurate and consistent on-line measurement of the lay length of twisted pairs used in telecommunication cables. Providing high-data rate capabilities, LayScan precisely determines the variations in lay length within each lay. Systematic lay variations, typically caused by twinning and cabling operations, can be readily observed and measured. A data acquisition system collects and processes the lay length data, and reports the measurement results. Beta LaserMike will also exhibit its latest CenterScan 2010 system. CenterScan 2010 provides on-line, high-speed eccentricity measurement of wire and cable insulation over a solid or stranded core without touching the product. Highly sensitive magnetic and optical technology precisely determines the location of the conductor and insulated wire. This information is instantly processed to provide eccentricity, diameter, and ovality measurements, and can be used to detect product flaws.

technique requires minimal modification to existing manufacturing processes, without introducing any new materials, and is cost-effective for high volume production. Hoowaki custom designs the micro-features according to material and application. The company’s design process takes material shrinkage and drawdown into account to provide features that give the optimal geometry on the final product. The company has demonstrated up to 20% reduction in dry sliding, and up to 80% reduction in lubricated sliding, significantly boosting the surface capabilities of standard polymers. Low-friction surfaces have already been applied to polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon, silicones and fluoropolymers using this process. Hoowaki’s surfaces can also be used to increase extruder productivity, and to reduce drag between the die surface and the polymer without changing the process parameters. The surfaces allow polymers to flow smoothly.
