Planning for the future is more important than ever, and Amtrak achieved its goal of creating one of the most modern and sophisticated telecommunications systems available when it converted the National Guard building in Washington DC into its new headquarters. The 82,000ft 2 building includes a converged network capable of providing high bandwidth and wireless connectivity for the up to 500 users housed across four floors of office space. A fiber optic network was the obvious choice to achieve its requirements, so Amtrak and its consulting engineers selected passive optical LAN due to its affordability, reliability, long life and reduced power consumption. You can read the full story on page 16. Davis-Standard LLC has strengthened its position in the market with the acquisition of Maillefer International Oy of Vantaa, Finland, and Ecublens, Switzerland. “We are proud to welcome the entire Maillefer team to the Davis-Standard family; together we become the market leading global extrusion systems and services provider to a world-class customer base,” said JimMurphy, Davis-Standard president and CEO. Solar initiative to cut costs for town M A K I N G T H E NEWS
EDF Renewable Energy company groSolar, and the town of Ontario, New York, have completed a solar project located on land shared with the town’s wastewater treatment facility. “The project is an excellent example of howmunicipalities, state agencies and private companies are collaborating to bring new sources of distributed power generation to communities across the country,” said Timothy Heinle, groSolar’s vice president. The project will generate approximately 3,500,000kWh of energy in its first full year of operation, and will provide power to the town at a fixed price for the next 25 years.

A new addition to the Han-Eco ® series
Small space cable installation
Harting has added two new products to its Han-Eco ® series.
Ultimately, this saves the user both time and money.
Two new hoods, in size 6B and 10B, with M40 cable entry enable the user to take advantage of larger cable cross sections and offer more cabling space while maintaining a compact size. The Han-Eco 10B lengthened hood is said to offer significantly more cabling space than the standard type, and so avoids the need for adapters or extensions.
The main advantages of the Han-Eco series have been retained: the light plastic connectors are easy to install, corrosion- resistant, and offer flexible assembly possibilities. The integrated frame and the optionally enclosed cable gland further reduce the number of required accessories.

Network in place
Amtrak chose VT Group to undertake the project. Aaron Reale, RCDD and director of operations at VT Group, explained: “This GPON solution is truly cutting edge. We use cable containing a single strand of single-mode fiber capable of providing hundreds of users’ unlimited bandwidth. People often think that fiber optic cabling is fragile, but it has a tensile strength almost three times that of traditional Category 6 copper cable, and it’s a fraction of the size and cost.”
In converting the National Guard building into its new 82,000ft 2 headquarters in Washington DC, Amtrak was determined to create a state-of-the-art facility. Its goal was to create one of the most modern and sophisticated telecommunications systems available to meet its present and future telecommunications requirements. Among the highest priorities was a converged network capable of providing high bandwidth and wireless connectivity for the up to 500 users housed across four floors of office space. A fiber optic network was the obvious choice to achieve its requirements, so Amtrak and its consulting engineers selected passive optical LAN due to its affordability, reliability, long life and reduced power consumption. Passive optical fiber networks (also known as GPON) are widely recognized as a solution for data bottlenecks and to leverage a cabling infrastructure with unlimited bandwidth potential. They are also easier to configure and have a smaller footprint. GPONare capable of protecting high-security communications through advanced data encryption, and offer cost savings over traditional networks, areeasily expandable, and have fewer energy and cooling/ventilation requirements.

Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois (ATXI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ameren Corporation, has selected a final route for the Mark Twain Transmission Project, a 345,000 volt transmission line and substation to be built in northeast Missouri. The approximately 100-mile route, which will be nearly 100 percent co-located on existing right of way, has received assents from the commissions of the five counties in which the line will be located. Specifically, the route will co-locate on existing right of way on Northeast Missouri Electric Power Cooperative’s (Northeast Power) 161,000 volt line between Palmyra and Kirksville, and Ameren Missouri’s 161,000 volt line from Kirksville to the Iowa border. Approximately 59 miles of Northeast Power’s 161,000 volt transmission line will be completely rebuilt, replacing the current wooden H-frame facilities with new steel, mainly monopole, structures. ATXI will pay for the poles, insulators and hardware. “Due to the age of Northeast Power’s current 161,000 volt line, it would need to be replaced within 10 to 15 years at a cost of approximately $30 million,” said Douglas Aeilts, CEO and general manager, Northeast Power. “WorkingwithATXI on this co-location project allows Northeast Power to save a significant amount of money while enhancing the reliability of our transmission system.” ATXI expects to invest approximately $250 million in the project, which is scheduled to be operational in December 2019.

Baltic power link
Although the Baltic power grid will eventually need to be synchronized with European power grids, the Estonian transmission system operator Elering believes the grid’s ability to function autonomously has to be increased. Elering’s chief of communications, Ain Köster, told a Baltic news service: “Since the three Baltic countries and Poland have been unable to reach an agreement regarding synchronization with the western European power grid, it would be reasonable to increase the capability to function as an energy island if Russia should cut us off from its power grid.” He added that if Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania increase that capacity, they would gain extra time to reach an agreement on synchronization. On 19 th September, European commission vice-president for energy union Maros Sefcovic visited emergency reserve power stations built by Elering to increase the reliability of the power grid. The main topic of the meeting was the desynchronization of power grids. Following the meeting, Elering CEO Taavi Veskimagi said: “Our first priority is to find a short-term solution which would keep lights on in Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian homes if, for some reason, we should
unexpectedly separate from the Russian joint power grid.”
Elering’s chief of communications, Ain Köster
The European Commission’s joint research center believes that the best synchronization option for the Baltic states is via two LitPol Link interconnections, costing up to €960 million.

Another world first?
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is thought to have achieved a world record by awarding the 700MW fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. It will be the largest single-site concentrated solar power (CSP) project in the world, basedon the independent power producer (IPP) model. The contract was awarded to a consortium of Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power andChina’s Shanghai Electric, who bid the lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) at $7.3 cents per kilowatt hour. The project, which will have the world’s tallest solar tower at 260m, will be commissioned in stages, beginning in late 2020.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said: “Our focus on renewable energy generation has led to a drop in prices worldwide, and has lowered the price of solar power bids in Europe and the Middle East. This was evident today when we received the lowest CSP project cost in the world.” The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is expected togenerate 1,000MW by 2020 and 5,000MW by 2030. The 13MW photovoltaic first phase became operational in 2013. The 200MW photovoltaic second phase of the solar park was launched in March 2017, and the 800MW photovoltaic third phase will be operational by 2020.

Cables app
5G cooperation
Kelani Cables PLC has introduced a wire calculator mobile app for selecting domestic or industrial electrical cables. The household component of the app has simple attributes that help find wires for single-phase wiring purposes. The consumer enters the electric current or rated power data of any item of equipment to find the cable with the best suited cross-sectional area. The electrical engineering component caters to project managers, engineers and electrical technical officers. Users can input more variables to this component, such as apparent power of a transformer (kVA) and voltage drop, length of the wire, determining whether it is single-core or multi-core, conductor material (copper or aluminum), wire type (armored or not) and especially the wire laying method (inside conduits or underground). Higher fiber production
Videx has introduced a new bending system concept
Furukawa Electric Company is planning to nearly double its fiber manufacturing capacity by 2019, and increase its capacity for optical fiber cable. Between 2014 and 2016, Furukawa Electric increased its fiber production capacity by 20 percent and planned to achieve another capacity increase of 20 percent by 2018. However, in order to meet strong customer demand for optical fiber and optical fiber cable, the Furukawa Electric board has approved capital spending of $150 million for further expansion in production, primarily in the US and Europe through its wholly owned subsidiary OFS. “The proliferation of hyper-scale and edge data centers, 5G wireless, and fiber-to-the- home, along with the greater digitization of communications in business, [is] creating the need for fiber in the network around the world,” said Timothy F Murray, head of the global optical fiber and cable business of Furukawa Electric and CEO of OFS. “Furukawa Electric is responding with greater capacity as we foresee this demand continuing into the next decade, with communication traffic estimated to increase during this period.”
Israel’s Videx has introducedanewbending system concept, using a slide bending die and integral stripper mechanism. Using the new line of VAS-DBQ machines, manufacturers will no longer need to make bending dies for each part. Videx Machine Engineering develops and builds machines for manufacturing U-bolts and other bent parts, working directly from wire coil. The new machines work with a floating bending die that covers the entire range of round and square bottom U-bolts, enabling the producer to make new sizes in minutes. VAS-DBQ types are equipped with a positive stripper system that allows running the machines at the fastest possible speed without the risk of parts jamming. The VAS line of machines pull wire from a coil, straighten, cut to length, chamfer and thread both ends, and then bend to shape. They can also perform cold forming operations, such as heading and extrusion, and material removing operations such as drilling and pointing.

Cable record for Australia
Withanexistingnetworkof fiber opticcabling set tobe removedduringconstructionworks on Canberra’s Stage One light rail project, an Australian manufacturing plant has created an entirely new cabling solution to significantly improve the network’s current capacity to provide secure communications between Canberra’s federal government departments. Prysmian Australia CEO Frederick Persson said government body ICON, which manages the 1,000kmgovernment network of fiber optic cables, was looking for a faster, reliable and cost-effective solution to replace the current assortment of cabling that stretches along the 12km Stage One light rail path.
Grameenphone’s exclusivity in using the Bangladesh Railway’s fiber optic network will end as the government looks to make the most of the resources available to realize its Digital Bangladesh vision. In 1989 Bangladesh Railway (BR), under a signalling modernization project, installed the optical fiber network at 300 stations with financial assistance from the Norwegian government. In 1997, as the capacity of the fiber optic remained mostly unused, Grameenphone signed an agreement with the railway division to use, maintain and run the business operation of the fiber optic cable. The government has now taken an initiative to withdraw the exclusivity agreement between Grameenphone and BR, citing the cable as a public resource that, as such, should be open to all. A joint committee of representatives from Grameenphone and BR is reviewing the terms of agreement between the two. 20-year

New compliant compounds
With the EU’s latest construction products regulations (CPR) taking effect, Teknor Apex has developed new Halguard ® low-smoke halogen-free flame-retardant compounds to enable cable manufacturers to comply with CPR for fire performance. The new regulations affect products used as permanent installations in a building structure, such as data cables, control cables and building wire. Cable manufacturers supplying such products to European markets must make a formal declaration of performance to certify that a particular product meets CPR performance standards, validated in testing by an independent body. CPR focuses on the fire reaction of a cable, its contribution to fire propagation through heat given off in combustion, the amount and transparency of the smoke emitted, and the acidity of the produced gases. The fire reaction of a cable is indicated by a classification system, with cables ranked from B2ca to Fca. Class B2ca requires the lowest heat release, lowest fire growth rate, and lowest flame spread performance from cable testing.
