In this bumper issue we feature two great trade shows – FABTECH, which this year returns to Chicago, and the São Paulo-based Tubotech, which is held every two years. After some recent nervous activity in stockmarkets around the world, which thankfully seem to have now stabilised, it is good to hear that attendances at both events are predicted to be record breaking, which just about sums up the positive and proactive attitude that the tube and pipe technology market has taken around the globe over the past three or four years. I recently celebrated my second year working in the industry and the main thing I have learnt in that time is what a truly global and dynamic industry this is – packed full of experienced and wise heads that have seen these sort of economic problems before and know how to battle through and come out stronger at the other side. Next issue we have features on bending as well as software so get your articles to me as soon as you can. Rory McBride – Editor

FABTECH 2011 The FABTECH International and AWS Welding Show, including METALFORM, is well established as the US industry event of the year. This year’s show, held once again at the outstanding McCormick Place, Chicago, is perfectly timed to provide attendees with the opportunity to emerge with the latest metal fabricating solutions in order to improve production as well as new business connections to help support plans for a successful 2011 and 2012.

Welding It is very difficult to achieve the highest standards of quality and safety using manual welding. This is due to certain welding positions, overhead and down-hand welds for example, often leading to faulty welds due to restricted access the user has in these welding positions. In order to have complete control over the weld pool, a perfect balance must be maintained between gravitational force and surface tension at every position of the torch.

Tubotech

In the first week of October, tube and pipe professionals will be streaming back to São Paulo, Brazil, from all points of the compass for the 2011 edition of Tubotech – the sixth International Tube, Fittings, and Components Fair and the leading such event anywhere. With all due respect to the glamour of Brazil, it represents a practical choice of venue too, never more so than in this year of bracing economic conditions worldwide.

Leading API pipe producer in Ukraine selects Radyne systems

SIKORA AG has opened a new technology centre at the headquarters in Bremen- Mahndorf. The new building with a total area of 2,500m 2 offers more space for research and development, sales, marketing and procurement over four floors. The reason for the company expansion is the positive development and growth of the company in the last few years. Besides Sikora employees and their families, important figures from the economy and culture of Bremen participated in the exercises. “With the new building we made a strategically important step into the future,” says Harry Prunk, chairman of Sikora AG. “With the expansion we are able to further extend our innovation activities. We have more space for new employees and offer a modern and comfortable working WITH six sets of Radyne precision induction heating systems supplied, installed and in regular operation since 2007, a leading producer of API grade SAW pipe based in Ukraine has recently installed a further two sets of Radyne induction power supplies and associated heat coils. This latest generation of Radyne induction heating system makes use of a new, modified design of heat coil box. The result is that they weigh slightly less than earlier units, a definite benefit when heat coils need to be moved from one line and installed onto another. The Radyne systems on site are used to pre-heat SAW pipe sections prior to the application of multi-layered PE and MARCEGAGLIA China celebrated its Yangzhou plant opening ceremony recently. The company aims to produce, in the first stage, 400,000 tons per year of high-end steel products at the Yangzhou plant, and relied upon Mair Research SpA for the supply of twelve custom-made, fully integrated tube finishing lines. The equipment supplied by Mair included two complete and integrated finishing lines for ERW tubing from 89 to 250mm OD to

FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) protective coatings. Line speeds ranging from 0.8m/ min up to 3m/min have been achieved, depending upon both the diameter and thickness of the pipe being induction heated. The system has been designed for pre-heating both SAW and conventional, longitudinal welded pipe sections. The Radyne solution is efficient and highly reliable and the process is easy to control and, unlike heating by natural gas, heat is applied instantaneously on demand. Most important of all is the net benefit to the environment due to the fact that induction pre-heating is environmentally clean and avoids the need to burn costly fossil fuels. produce mother pipes for the cold drawing process (DOM); an 80 ton tube drawing bench for tubing up to 89mm OD, complete with pointing machine, ten-roll straightener, cutting machine (HM blades) and tube collecting systems; a 300 ton tube drawing bench for tubing up to 230mm OD; a ten-roll straightener for tubing up to 230mm OD, integrated with cutting (HM blades) and brushing machines; and two finishing lines for tubing of 120 to 230mm OD, including

Seamless tube plant delivered

SMS Meer, Germany, has started delivery of the world’s largest PQF ® (premium quality finishing) plant for seamless tubes with diameters up to 20". The customer is a Chinese consortium consisting of the Tianjin Pipe Corporation (TPCO) and the Jiangsu Shagang Group Huaigang Special Steel Company. Erection was scheduled to start in August in the Huai’an works in Jiangsu province, with production due to start at the beginning of 2012. The capacity of the new PQF plant is 500,000 tons of seamless tubes per year. The main customers are the oil and gas industry. SMS Meer project manager Roland Preuten commented: “The project has a signal effect for the whole tube industry. This plant will represent the largest production facility for seamless tubes in China. The maximum diameter of 20" is a record. PQF seamless tubes are thus breaking into a new performance dimension.” In the PQF mill, three rolls are positioned uniformly around the tube. As a result, the forces acting on the tube are distributed more uniformly around the circumference than with a two-roll arrangement. Benefits of PQF plants include low energy and material consumptions. The PQF process allows smaller tolerance deviations in the roll gap, minimum material load and fewer disruptive influences during the rolling process. For tube mill owners this means that tube production runs in a more stable manner and is easier to master, and the lower material stress makes it possible for the product range to be extended to thin- walled dimensions and higher steel grades. The Chinese consortium decided in favour of the PQF technology developed by SMS Meer because it assures not only a new spectrum of dimensions, but also a consistently high tube quality within the closest tolerances, plus a dependably high productivity. For the 20" tubes SMS Meer has developed the world’s largest conetype piercer with a roll diameter of 1,700mm. SMS Meer GmbH – Germany Fax: +49 42148 90090

RAFTER Equipment Corporation has successfully replaced a raft set on a competitor’s tube mill. The customer came to the company looking to replace the original rafts (both primary and spare sets) because they were no longer able to make quality tubing consistently and efficiently. The project was complicated by the use of a custom raft exchange system and the lack of any engineering details. Rafter had to rely mainly on measurements on Monday morning. Rafter Equipment Corporation manufactures tube and pipe mills, roll forming machines, cut- off machines, auxiliary and other related tube and pipe mill machinery. Additional services include rebuilding and upgrading mill equipment. Rafter Equipment Corporation – USA Fax: +1 440 572 3703 Website: www.rafterequipment.com Rafter replaces raft set on competitor’s mill obtained on-site. In addition to replacing the rafts, the customer decided to remove the original third-stand style drive shaft disconnect system and original automatic top-shaft positioning system, both of which had failed to live up to expectations. Rafter assisted with this conversion by supplying new universal drive shafts with quick-disconnect couplings. The customer installed the new raft sets over a weekend shutdown, and was back in production

EuroBLECH: success in a global market

STAND reservation for EuroBLECH 2012, the 22 nd International Technology Exhibition for Sheet Metal Working, has begun. Taking place from 23 to 27 October 2012 in Hanover, Germany, the exhibition will occupy eight halls at the Hanover Exhibition Grounds: halls 11 to 17 and hall 27. The exhibitor brochure, published in five languages, is now available and includes important information for companies interested in participating in the leading international trade show for the sheet metal working industry. With a total of 1,455 exhibitors from 43 countries and 61,500 visitors from 98 countries, EuroBLECH 2010 was more international than ever and covered a net exhibition space of 78,600m 2 . EuroBLECH is audited by FKM, Society for Voluntary Control of Fair and Exhibition Statistics. The show had an above average increase in visitors from outside Germany, in particular from Asia, North America and the Middle East. EuroBLECH therefore reflects the general development of an

ever more international orientation of this industry sector. ‘Sustainable success in a global market’ is the theme for exhibiting companies at EuroBLECH 2012. The sheet metal working industry is a high-performance industry sector; this has become clear in the past few years: the industry was able to cope with the economic crisis by expertise, flexibility and continued innovation. Now companies have to closely watch industry trends and global markets. Only those companies that know their markets and seize their chances early enough will be able to profit from new business opportunities. This applies to small companies seeking to expand their business in a particular region as well as to global players continuously developing their worldwide networks. “Since the previous EuroBLECH the economic situation within the sheet metal working industry has clearly stabilised. Although stand reservation for 2012 has just started we are already able to announce very positive demand for stand space at the next EuroBLECH,” explains Nicola Hamann, exhibition director of EuroBLECH on behalf of the organisers, Mack Brooks Exhibitions. “While most of the companies were quite cautious for the previous show and preferred to book their usual stand space, now many exhibitors are asking for bigger stand sizes again at the leading industry event for the sheet metal working industry. As the central hub for international

business and the first point of contact for cutting edge technology, EuroBLECH is considered the key exhibition for a successful future by small companies as well as the big players,” says Nicola Hamann. The exhibition layout reflects the complete sheet metal working technology chain and covers 15 exhibition categories: sheet metal, semi-finished and finished products; handling; separation; forming; flexible sheet metal working; tube/section working; processing of hybrid structures; joining/ welding; surface technology; tool technology; machine elements; process control and quality assurance; CAD/CAM applications; factory equipment and R&D. To reflect the growing importance of hybrid structures in sheet metal working, processing of sheet metal/plastic hybrid structures has now been included in the EuroBLECH exhibition profile as a separate category. Companies interested in participating at EuroBLECH 2012 can order the exhibitor brochure and find detailed information about the exhibition on the freshly designed multi-lingual show website. The website also includes photos and videos from the previous exhibition as well as the latest news on the show and the industry – eg the regular online newsletter EuroBLECH Bulletin.

I ndustry N ews OMS appoints sales agent for Brazil OPTICAL Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd, a specialist pipe measurement technology company for the oil and gas industry, has appointed Nortech as its sales agent for Brazil. Established in 1999 and based in Rio de Janeiro, Nortech is a provider of innovative calibration and leak detection products and services to the natural gas, petroleum and power generation industries. Adriano Camino, managing director at Nortech, commented on the new agreement: “Nortech has very quickly established a reputation for partnering only with those companies who are seen as market leaders in their industry sector. measurement, combined with Nortech’s experience in providing pipeline leak detection systems and pressure monitoring of natural gas pipelines, our agreement makes complete sense and should create some very interesting synergies.” OMS’s pipe measurement products and services provide benefits for major oil and gas companies around the world. The company is currently providing services for two projects in Brazil: for Petrobras on one of its onshore pipeline projects; and for Subsea 7 on its offshore P55 project. Nortech secured its first contract with Petrobras in 2010, for the provision of leak detection services on natural gas projects. Hugh Davies, director of client solutions at OMS, commented: “Having a local agent in Brazil will help OMS to secure more business from what is fast becoming a key growth area in the international oil and gas market.” OMS’s Smart-Fit™ software uses pipe measurement data to predict and control fit-up, before the pipes are brought into the bead stall for welding. This prevents production problems due to poor fit-up, and manages the assembly of problem pipes to maximise welding productivity. For end dimensioning of pipes, OMS uses its own automatic Pipe Checker™ laser measurement tool, which is capable of measuring more than 2,000 IDs and 2,000 ODs, as well as being able to accurately measure the WTs for each pipe end in less than 20 seconds. The tool is accurate to 0.05mm and enables just two OMS staff to measure a minimum of 200 pipe ends in a single shift. This means less time on site, minimising project delays and costs for the customer. Optical Metrology Services Ltd – UK Fax: +44 8700 940014

Renewing Kansas City water distribution system WACHS Water Services, a provider of solutions for the management of aging water infrastructure in North America, has announced a service contract worth up to $6mn over a renewable multi-year period, awarded by the Water Services Department of Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO), to perform asset location, operational condition assessment and GPS location mapping services of more than 35,000 water main valves in the Kansas City water distribution system. Valves are installed in water mains to control the flow of water. However with a high percentage of water mains reaching the end of their useful life in many urban areas, the operability of valves has become one of the most critical concerns for utilities dealing with sustainability, main breaks, repair and replacement activities. Working closely with KCMO, Wachs Water Services will be primarily focused on improving the reliability of the small and large valves in the water network and creating an accurate information knowledge base for each asset that is accessible to all water utility stakeholders, including engineering, operations and field personnel. “The Kansas City Water Department has taken another big step toward ensuring water distribution sustainability and we are proud to be supporting the utility in their efforts,” said Cliff Wilson, president, Wachs Water Services. “More and more utilities are discovering that gaining control of their water network and obtaining accurate system information is the critical first step in results-oriented asset management. Wachs Water Services has a proven track record, with successful programmes in over 200 utilities, including Baltimore, Washington DC, Atlanta and Houston.” According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there are about 240,000 water main breaks in the United

States each year. The US Geological Survey estimates that these water main breaks waste more than 1.7 trillion gallons of water at a cost of about $2.6bn annually. An additional challenge facing utilities is the operability of aging water main valves to help control and minimise the consequences of these main breaks. Wachs Water Services has seen an average initial water main valve operability of only 60% in more than 500,000 inspections nationwide. This means that up to 40% of a utility’s water main valves are likely to be inoperable and either cannot

be located, accessed or opened/closed. “Aging water networks are becoming more challenging to manage with each passing year,” added Mr Wilson. “The good news is that with the support of Wachs Water Services, utilities are boosting their water main valve operability as high as 97% and achieving significant and measurable efficiency gains as well.” Wachs Water Services – USA Fax: +1 847 415 2196

Tolexpo 2011: recovery and innovations

For the first time this year, in partnership with the Tolexpo show, Tôlerie magazine is organising a competition for students in the various areas that involve sheet metal working. The Tol&Design Challenge has been created to put the spotlight on the expertise of young people who have chosen the various subjects which involve sheet metal working, and aims to promote these subjects and the production chain itself, by bringing students together to work on an industrial project. It is also an opportunity for the students to present their expertise to industry professionals by creating finished products – in this case a chair – using precise specifications. The organisers of Tolexpo, Midest, the global sub-contracting show, and Maintenance Expo, the maintenance solutions show, are continuing to work THE world pipe market is projected to expand 5.8 per cent per year to 31.5bn metres in 2015, a mild deceleration relative to the 2005-2010 period. This slowdown can be almost entirely attributed to China, the world’s largest consumer of pipe. After increasing rapidly from 2000 to 2010, Chinese pipe demand is expected to rise at about the average worldwide rate through 2015. Advances in North America, Eastern Europe and Western Europe are expected to accelerate through 2015, as these regions recover from the global financial crisis. The Africa/Mideast region and the rest of the Asia/Pacific region will also record faster growth, as local construction firms and industrial enterprises use pipe more intensely. These and other trends are presented in World Plastic Pipe, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc, a Cleveland-based industry market research firm. World plastic pipe demand is forecast to increase 7.3 per cent annually to 20.3 million metric tons in 2015. Consumption of smaller-volume plastic pipe products – such as ABS, GRP and PP pipe – will expand at an above-average pace, as end users become more familiar with their technical characteristics and performance features. Increases in global construction activity and process manufacturing output

together in order to create communication synergies and boost their industry sectors. The major objective is to create a technological showcase that will bring the expertise of sub-contractors together with that of production equipment manufacturers. This agreement confirms the close links between these three events, which are positioning themselves to cover the whole of the industrial process, from start to finish, in various business sectors. It offers buyers and principals the opportunity to find solutions to all their needs under one roof: equipment and investments with Tolexpo; expertise with Midest; and services with Maintenance Expo. DBR Event – France

THE 4 th edition of Tolexpo, the international show for sheet metal, coil, tube and section equipment, organised by DBR Event, will be held at Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre from 15 to 18 November 2011. Six months before the show opens, Tolexpo already had more than 150 exhibitors, among them both French leaders in the sector and the majority of foreign manufacturers. Almost 11,000 targeted visitors looking for new equipment will discover the products and technical innovations offered by suppliers at the show. Visitors will find solutions to all their needs, whether they are looking to renew or modernise their equipment, begin using new technology, improve their productivity, or bring their businesses into line with standards and regulations.

World pipe market to expand 6 per cent will support growth. The North American plastic pipe market is forecast to grow more than six per cent annually through 2015, as product sales in the US recover rapidly.

Plastic pipe consumption in the US is expected to increase nearly seven per cent per year during this time, after it declined dramatically between 2007 and 2009 because of turmoil in the residential construction industry and the global financial crisis. More than two-thirds of all plastic pipe demand generated during the 2010-2015 period will be attributable to the Asia/Pacific region. Several major Asian countries are forecast to record rapid growth, including India, China and Indonesia. China alone will account for 40 per cent of global plastic pipe demand generated between 2010 and 2015. Growth in the Africa/Mideast, East European and West European plastic pipe markets will accelerate through 2015. In contrast, Central and South America will register slower growth than their industrialising counterparts as advances will be measured from a fairly high 2010 base.

Ernst Blissenbach GmbH among the top ten IN April the Huber Verlag für Neue Medien (Huber Publishing House for New Media) for the sixth time awarded the Industriepreis to the best industry solutions. This year the awards were presented under the auspices of the DTAD – Deutscher Auftragsdienst. Recipients were chosen for the most innovative product developments and market innovations in industrial, subcontractor and services companies. An expert group consisting of university professors, scientists, industry journalists as well as experts from different industries evaluated submissions of more than 500 nominated companies on the basis of a set of criteria like innovative content and

product benefit. Ernst Blissenbach GmbH successfully qualified and placed among the top ten in the production technology category. There are many reasons for the success and some of these are: Ernst Blissenbach GmbH holds numerous international patents and started introducing innovations for the tubing industry more than three decades ago. That also means that Blissenbach customers can achieve savings every month by upgrading their eb ID-scarfing system with the latest innovation – “weld monitoring”. At Ernst Blissenbach GmbH continuous development is not one objective among many, but rather a basic requirement for survival in a high-tech environment. Being close to the market right from the start is a must for a manufacturer of complete ID-scarfing systems. That is why intensive cooperation with the customer is the focal point of innovation marketing. The management of Ernst Blissenbach GmbH subjects every new idea to a myriad of tests before it is allowed to conquer the market as the next innovation – and it always does so with great success. This company from Remscheid is the international leader when it comes to providing process solutions for “Tube ID-scarfing systems of premium quality for

the removal of the weld bead in high- frequency, longitudinally welded tubes” – even if the average consumer has no idea how valuable that is for him. Each and every one of us, indirectly, and without realising it, may come face to face with the technology of Ernst Blissenbach GmbH. A car for example can contain 80 metres or more of tubes that had their inside welding bead removed by premium tools supplied by the company – which constitutes a major precondition for the further processing of the tubes. That gives consumers the all- important and reassuring “good feeling”.
In order to keep its worldwide leadership position and to be able to offer tailor-made solutions, the development department has been moved to the centre of the company. Customer-facing areas like service and support are engaged in a constant exchange with the engineers. What is really special about this model is the fact that any of the employees can initiate a new project. Consistent proximity to the market is the goal of this cooperation. It is not surprising that Ernst Blissenbach, the founder and owner of the company, spends three quarters of his time on innovations. Ernst Blissenbach GmbH – Germany RAFTER Equipment Corporation has expanded its in-house manufacturing capabilities with the addition of another machining centre. The new machine is a Mazak vertical machining centre with an 80" x 30" table and 30-tool magazine. The company can now produce more parts in-house for both quality control and delivery time improvements. The relatively large table will allow for the machining of larger parts or for several smaller parts in one setup. Rafter Equipment Corporation manufactures tube and pipe mills, roll forming machines, cutoff machines, auxiliary and other related tube and pipe mill machinery. Additional services include rebuilding and upgrading mill equipment. Originally started in 1917, the Rafter name is known for reliable, high-quality tube mill and roll forming equipment.
