It’s that busy time again! Renewal and reinvigoration is always the customary name of the game come January of any new year. But this year seems to hold more urgency than most, with serious change taking place on a number of levels. Whether anyone resolves to do anything or not, 2008 is set to be an incredibly challenging year. With the current state of the world economy at its worst in over a decade, economists are predicting downturns ranging from grim to worse. Issues of the economy are also likely to play a central theme in the important elections that will take place around the globe in 2008, with new presidents due to take over in Russia and the USA. A relief from these demanding conditions, the forthcoming Tube Düsseldorf is set to be a corker of a show, with over 800 exhibitors already booked (the exhibitor list is previewed on pages 28-43). However, even the ever-reliable Tube Düsseldorf will be impacted by newness as the show will be joined for the first time by Metav 2008. Also a first for 2008, INTRAS Publications will launch Tube Products INTERNATIONAL , a new magazine aimed at the producer and end-user of tube and pipe products. In careful planning over the last 12 months, the first issue of the magazine – edited by Mr Paul Hogg (paul@intras.co.uk) – will be distributed at Tube Düsseldorf 2008.

The spirit of regeneration has even affected Tube & Pipe Technology ; you may have noticed that a little redecoration has taken place this issue. The more observant readers will also have noticed that my photo has changed. Please don’t be surprised if it looks like I have aged somewhat. I assure you that it’s just worry about the amount of work involved in the forthcoming Tube Düsseldorf issue!

Wafios confirms takeover of Mewag

Wafios AG, Germany, has achieved the takeover of long-established bending machine manufacturer Mewag Maschinenfabrik AG, Switzerland. It is believed that the merging of these two technically leading manufacturers of tube and profile bending machines will strengthen the quality and innovative leadership of both companies. The

production of special high-quality machines will be continued at both plants. A few years ago, Wafios AG, also a leading manufacturer of wire processing machines, took over the tube and profile bending capabilities of Pulzer Biegetechnik, which then had been a corporation of Trumpf, Germany. Wafios has since been able to continuously expand its range of tube forming machines. Once completed, the Wafios takeover of Mewag will create a comprehensive and innovative centre of competence, based on 50 years of tube and profile bending experience. This move will ensure worldwide recognition of both companies. The long established production sites in Reutlingen, Germany, and Wasen, Switzerland, will be maintained and expanded in accordance with the growth of the tube-bending sector.

Together, Wafios and Mewag will streamline future common sales and blend tube bending capabilities

in development, purchasing and production

› Mr Urs Kühni, CEO of Mewag AG, is looking forward to working closely with the Wafios board

The the complementary, innovative and extended product and customer service range will be the customers of both companies. Together, Wafios and Mewag will streamline future common sales activities and blend tube-bending capabilities in development, purchasing and production. Wafios will directly benefit from the cooperation with Mewag, as it will result in a considerable growth in sales, especially of large-diameter tube benders. The merging of the two companies constitutes a lasting solution to Mewag’s successor question. The previous majority shareholder of Mewag will have a seat on the administrative board where she will be able to continue to protect the long-term interests of Mewag. Wafios and Mewag are looking forward to this German-Swiss cooperation and are convinced that added value will be generated for customers, partners and employees of both companies. main beneficiaries of

Tremendous success for Tube Southeast Asia

San Phung, Thermatool Corp, said “Tube Southeast Asia presented us with opportunities.... We will definitely exhibit again in 2009”

Tube and wire Southeast Asia 2007 celebrated a very successful inauguration last October, providing an excellent boost to the region’s tube, pipe, wire and cable industries. The trade fairs attracted 7,038 trade visitors from more than 60 countries. According to the organisers Messe Düsseldorf Asia, 33 per cent of visitors came from overseas with a significant number from China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea and the Middle East. Over 380 exhibiting companies from 30 countries including national and group pavilions from Austria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Taiwan, UK and USA occupied a gross space of 15,000m 2 . The trade fairs were opened by Khun Chakramon Phasukavanich, the permanent secretary of Thailand’s Ministry of Industry. Khun Chakramon asserted in his opening address that the hosting of wire and Tube Southeast Asia in Bangkok was “indeed timely with Thailand’s aspiration to be ‘The Hub of Asia’” . He also stated that both trade fairs “provide avenues for the various business sectors to work closely to tap the potential arising from the regional integration initiatives as well as Thailand’s own initiatives with existing and potential trading partners.” Khun Chakramon concluded that “Thailand is an exciting growth market in Asia and enjoys a strategic location at the heart of Asia.” Messe Duesseldorf Asia’s managing director, Mr Gernot Ringling, reiterated these

views saying “Thailand’s central location within the region is opening more trade and investment opportunities.” He also stated that the region’s affluence bodes well with the staging of both the wire and tube trade fairs in Thailand. Many exhibiting companies expressed their satisfaction with the trade fairs. Mr Andrew Service, export sales manager, Corrosion

Materials (represented in Thailand by JJ Advanced Products (Thailand) Co Ltd), said “Our objective to exhibit was to provide support to our agent in Thailand. We were impressed with the size of the show and have received a lot of interest.” San Phung, executive director (Asia Pacific), Thermatool Corp, com- mented “Tube Southeast Asia presented us with opportunities to not only meet new customers but

The service provided by the organisers was impressive and we managed to meet a number of prospective customers.” Visitor feedback (taken from random interviews) revealed that the two main objectives for visiting Tube Southeast Asia were to learn about new developments and to source for buying requirements. According to the survey, 95 per cent stated that they were pleased with the range of products and services on display. In addition, 90 per cent affirmed the importance and relevance of the fairs to their job function and indicated that they would likely purchase some of the products on display. In terms of the purchase time frame, 70 per cent indicated the high probability of placing their orders either at the show or within a year. Unison appoints new agent in Germany and Austria

EMS was selected because of previous experience with Unison. EMS’s MD Mr Brucks has managed a number of Unison’s

Unison, UK, a manufacturer of all- electric tube bending machines, has extended its international sales operations with the appointment of a new agent for Germany and Austria. This new international support will help Unison to serve the high and growing levels of demand for its all-electric, servomotor-actuated machines. The new agent, EMS Ltd, has a strong background in related machinery fields, and brings detailed knowledge of local metalworking manufacturing bases and the advanced technologies used in Unison’s machines. Unison has consistently pushed the boundaries of all-electric, servomotor- controlled tube benders for more than a decade. Over the last two years, its business has been growing very rapidly, driven in part by worldwide trends of large increases in the cost of both tubing materials and energy. As a result, most tender

documents now specify all-electric architecture. servomotor-based bending machines have traditionally been used in applications which demand great precision, and use costly exotic materials,” says Unison’s sales manager Mr Julian Birditt. “All-electric tube

installations in Germany

“Now more people are looking at the technology, in the light of escalating raw material costs, because machine setup is highly repeatable and scrap is almost eliminated. This new agent will extend our reach greatly, helping us to take our message to new markets.” EMS’s managing director Mr Martin Brucks, states, “I am delighted to have won the Unison franchise, as this company has a genuine reputation for innovation, and regularly wins orders for some of the most challenging tube bending applications in the world.” many

› Mr Martin Brucks of EMS, the new agent for Unison

EMS was selected for Germany and Austria due to its personnel’s previous experience with Unison. EMS’s managing director Mr Brucks has managed a number of Unison’s existing machine installations in Germany. “With the recent introduction of benders that take the maximum size of tube that can be handled to 150mm, all-electric machines are really starting to eat into the mainstream tube bending marketplace,” adds Mr Birditt. “We’re fortunate to secure the services of this agent at this time, as EMS brings a wealth of experience that allows it to hit the ground running, and provide the local support needed to secure customers in this region.” All-electric actuation provides significant advantages in terms of precision, repeatability and energy consumption. Each of the tools employed during bending is under software control, providing almost instant changeover of tools for accurate bends.

Once the machine is set up, operating parameters can also be stored, allowing machines to be reconfigured for another part or batch in a few minutes, without creating any scrap. Further, as the actuation elements of the machine only need energy when a bend is being made, total power consumption is greatly reduced. Among Unison’s latest technology advances is a laser measurement system that dynamically measures the accuracy of bend angles and automatically compensates for any errors.

Ukraine’s UVIS Group transforms into Centravis

The program of Centravis plans that by 2010, the company will shift from regional leaders to world producers of seamless stainless pipe

International holding company Centravis Ltd, Ukraine, has been created from the UVIS group of companies. Centravis is aiming to become a major new player on the global seamless stainless steel tube market. Officially launched last November at the 2007 Stainless Steel World Conference & Exhibition, Centravis combines the manufacturing, service and trading assets of UVIS into a single integrated structure. Centravis includes the production capacities of Nikopol stainless pipe mill and an extensive network of trade companies and agents in western Europe (Germany, Italy, Switzerland), USA, and CIS countries (Russia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine). These companies include UAS SA, UAS America, Nikopol Stainless Italy, Eurolinex (stainless pipe only), Promsiryemetall, Nikopol Ukr Stainless, Nikopol Rus Stainless and others. As part of this renaming process, JSC Nikopol stainless tube mill (NSTM) has been

renamed as JSC Centravis Production Ukraine (CPU). This decision was taken by the company’s shareholders during a recent meeting. Mr Vitaliy Lyutik, the acting NSTM general director, has been appointed the general director of Centravis Production Ukraine. The long-term development program of Centravis plans that by 2010, the company will shift from regional leaders to world producers of seamless stainless pipe. To achieve this aim, the scaled reorganization process is supported by intensive investment in technology, equipment and training programs for employees. The project will be organised by an international team of managers from Germany, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, according to European standards of management and business operations. The company’s total investment into production facilities and new technologies will amount to $115 million in 2007-2008. This will expand its range, allow a twofold

increase in production capacities, and improve product quality. Improvements will also be made to the IT infrastructure and warehouse system, with the implementation of ERP- and CRM-systems and introduction of TQM (total quality management) according to ISO 9000. CEO of Centravis holding, Mr YuriyAtanasov states, “The future belongs to companies able to combine the technology and quality of western giants with the eastern dynamic and proactive approach. We are focused on local partnership together with our global competence.” Mr Ilya Shirokobrod, Centravis marketing and sales director, states, “Our mission is to become the most valuable, flexible and reliable partner in providing competitive seamless stainless steel solutions.” According to a 2006 SMR annual report, Centravis is number five in the international niche market of seamless stainless tubes (with a market share of 5 per cent), number one in the heat exchanger market segment (with a market share of 15 per cent), and number four in the boiler tube segment (with a market share of 12 per cent). The company’s market share is 7 per cent in western Europe, 16 per cent in eastern Europe, and 40 per cent in the CIS. The Centravis product portfolio includes more than 1,000 standard size tubes produced in 60 corrosion and heat resistant steel grades in seven areas. These are general pipes, boiler tubes, heat-exchanger tubing, instrumental tubing, furnace tubes, hollow bars and Ni-alloy tubes. The company’s products are used in industries including chemical and petrochemical, nuclear and thermal power engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy, machine and shipbuilding, and food.

Scotchman Industries, USA, has celebrated 40 years of machine tool manufacturing of the Scotchman Hydraulic Ironworker line. Mr Arthur Kroetch, the founder of the company, bought the patent for the original ironworker from its inventor in 1967. This machine is claimed to have revolutionized the process of cutting, bending and punching holes in steel. It uses hydraulic pressure to cut or punch steel rather than sawing or drilling, to accomplish the same results. Scotchman Industries started with just one 35t hydraulic ironworker and has since developed a line of 11 units, ranging from 45 to 150t. This range includes the single and dual component tool ironworker (for several different tools), and fully integrated ironworkers. In 1983, Scotchman Industries incorporated circular cold saws into its product line to complement the ironworkers. In 1990, Scotchman began manufacturing the circular cold saws in its South Dakota manufacturing plant.

› There is a 40 year history behind the Scotchman Hydraulic Ironworker line

In 2002, Scotchman added an American- made band saw to its ‘metal fabricating solutions’. Band saw models include a 20" vertical contour, and swing head 10 x 16" and 14 x 19". This addition completed the Scotchman line for cutting. In November 2005, Scotchman purchased Advanced Measuring Systems located in Forney, Texas, and moved the manufacturing to Philip, South Dakota. Advanced Measuring Systems is a manual length-gauging device that can be mounted on all types of metalworking machinery. In September of 2006, Scotchman added a programmable stop and feed system. This system can be easily connected to numerous Scotchman machines and can be connected to almost any type of metal working machinery. Scotchman Industries Inc – USA Fax : +1 800 843 5545
