I NDUS T RY Optima Metal Services adds value with £3mn investment in BLM LaserTube technology
UK-BASED Optima Metal Services’ business strategy is to build on its existing customer base by adding value to the services it supplies. What started as a business selling nuts and bolts from a lock-up garage has turned in to one of the UK’s leading stockholders of stainless steel, steel and aluminium. It added to this by also investing in flat sheet laser, bending and deburring. Now, it is expanding its services further with a £3mn plus investment in a dedicated facility to house the arrival of 3D Tube Laser processing in the form of a LaserTube LT8 system from BLM Group. “With the investment we had made on the flat bed laser side of the business we had every aspect of that process covered and adding value to the tube material that we held for customers offered great potential to grow the business further,” said Optima’s operations manager, Andy Knowles. “The BLM LaserTube was the next logical step for us and, as soon as it was commissioned in January, it was in
production with the expectation that it will generate 10 per cent of the company’s turnover in its first year, a share that can only grow as we explain the significant benefits that laser cut tube can bring to their businesses.” Among those benefits is the ability to supply a complete cut list to customers with the BLM LaserTube LT8.10 going way beyond customers’ expectations of what can be achieved. The consistency and accuracy of the cut parts also assists in deskilling and expediting the final assembly of parts, as when they arrive at the customer, they are immediately ready to assemble or weld, without any further intervention. “Part of our work now is to explain to customers exactly what this machine can do. We achieve this in part by inviting customers on-site and producing sample parts while they stand in front of the LaserTube machine. This is a real eye opener for them,” said Clyde Stratton, Optima’s laser tube manager. The BLM LaserTube LT8 has an impressive mechanical specification with the capability to cut tube up to
240mm diameter (virtually any tube profile can be processed) and up to 12.5m in length, with a maximum unload length of 8.5m with tube weight of up to 40kg/m. It can also be specified with either a 3.5kW CO 2 or 3 or 4kW fibre laser source, delivered through a 3D tilt cutting head. While the mechanical specification is sector leading, it was BLM’s use of software to enhance the manufacturing process that was key in helping Optima Stainless make the final investment decision. “The BLM Artube software is excellent and extremely flexible, we particularly like the way you can import a Solidworks model and it will separate it into individual parts for production, on the fly. This saves lots of time and effort and, again, adds value for customers,” said Mr Stratton. “It’s not all about CAD systems though, we can just as easily create complex parts from pencil sketches.” The versatility or Artube allows the user to quickly add, edit or remove

Pomini Tenova completes installation of its 18 th roll grinder at pipe manufacturer
This delivery confirms the rising dynamism of the South-Eastern Asian country in the steel sector since the beginning of this century. “The Vietnamese market is increasingly looking for high technology in order to satisfy the market demand of quality products, and the local presence of Tenova in the country was paramount to acquire such projects and understand customers’ requirements. “Besides the five machines that are already in HoaPhat, Pomini Tenova has also successfully commissioned one roll grinder in Pomina, two in Hoa Sen, four others in Posco Vietnam and six at China Steel Sumikin in the past years”, said Tran Anh Chuong and Stefano Marelli, Tenova global sales, South East Asia.
ROLL grinder producer Pomini Tenova has completed the installation of three roll grinders for Hoa Phat Group, one of the largest manufacturers of construction steels, coated steels and steel pipes in Vietnam. With this commission, the number of machines supplied and successfully installed in Vietnam by Pomini Tenova for different customers, reaches the significant milestone of 18. “The choice of our technology for Hoa Phat’s new productive site confirms the good quality of the relationship that we have been able to establish with the Hoa Phat Group over the years, making Pomini a reliable partner. “We are particularly satisfied with this project as, in its latest phase, we encountered several challenges due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 emergency. Nevertheless, we com- pleted it successfully,” said Ermanno
Croci, Pomini Tenova area sales manager. These three machines, delivered for Hoa Phat’s new hot rolling mill located in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam – add to the two innovative foundation-free roll grinders for the cold rolling mill in Lac Dao, Hung Yen Province, of the same Vietnamese company.

Combilift wins second prestigious design award Combilift was among the winners of the 2020 Red Dot Design Award for its recently launched Combi-CBE4 model – the world’s first compact counterbalance design electric powered multi-directional forklift with its patented traction on all wheels. The ‘Red Dot’ distinction is now established internationally as a seal of quality for good design, and as one of the world’s largest product competitions, these awards attract submissions from over 50 countries every year. “We are very proud that one of our products has once again been recognised as a worthy winner by the jury,” said Combilift CEO and Co-founder Martin McVicar. “Both these accolades are testimony to the high calibre of our product designers and R&D department, and to the benefits achieved in collaboration with our clients during the design process of a new model.” This is the second Red Dot Award that Combilift has received – it was a winner in 2014 with the Combi-WR4 multidirectional pedestrian operated reach stacker. The Combi-CBE, with 4t lift capacity, features the company’s internationally patented independent electric traction, which provides all front and rear drive wheels with 100 per cent traction control, therefore negating the need for differential lock on slippery surfaces. By inputting the wheel-base parameters, the traction commands are calculated by the control system. As the truck drives, the speed and rotational direction of the wheels are controlled independently, and tight turns can be negotiated with no tyre wear. This also offers precise acceleration and deceleration control for the operator, significantly reducing long load momentum twisting when travelling sideways. The Red Dot jury commented as follows: “This compact, multidirectional forklift truck is characterised by its extraordinary maneuverability and high traction as well as emission-free operation.”

Collaboration and investment in digitisation to help with COVID-19 fallout A COLLABORATION centered on innovation and sustainability has gained momentum through the Lighthouse Plant Acciaio_4.0. ORI Martin, a European integrated steel groups for high-quality steel, and Tenova, a Techint Group company specialised in innovative solutions for the metals and mining industries, have invested in digital technologies, to help face the crisis hitting the Italian and European manufacturing sector. Both have their headquarters in Lombardy, Italy, which is one of the areas most affected by the COVID-19 health emergency worldwide. “Despite the difficult moment – both from a health and an economic point of view – ORI Martin has not stopped investing, especially in strategic models like Digital Transformation and Circular Economy, fundamental pillars for green steel production and at the basis of the Lighthouse Plant Acciaio_4.0”, said Uggero de Miranda, ORI Martin president. “We are aware that this is not just a simple investment: it is almost a revolution. We are asking our employees great efforts in terms of time, energy and also creativity. There is enthusiasm, but it cannot be denied that, as in all endeavours, there are critical issues and doubts. We are proud and happy to have Tenova at our side in this – I would say historic – transition for the ORI Martin Group.” Acciaio_4.0, one of the four Lighthouse Plant projects selected by the Italian Smart Factory Cluster (Cluster Fabbrica Intelligente), entails an overall investment of €12mn to €8mn of which are partly (22 per cent) funded by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and the Lombardy Region within the Fund for Sustainable Growth. The goal is to transform ORI Martin’s steel plant in Brescia into a smart factory with the support of Tenova, the project’s technological partner, thanks to the application of the enabling technologies of Industry 4.0. Roberto Pancaldi, Tenova CEO, added: “Over the past months, our main priority – together with safeguarding our employees’ health and safety – has been to guarantee business continuity to our customers, trying to react promptly.” “This experience is showing us that the path undertaken is the right one to face the challenges ahead: the implementation of a platform for advanced digital services based on big data analysis and machine learning technologies. Integrating the entire value chain is the key to manage steel plant operations in the most efficient way. This crisis will widen the gap between those who invested in innovation and those who did not.”

Around 80 per cent of international visitors in December are expected to hail from Europe. Although strong producer and visitor countries such as Italy, France and Spain are seriously impacted by the consequences of the Corona crisis, these are the European countries – alongside the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Russia, Great Britain and Turkey – where most European trade visitors will come from to visit the two trade fairs. If the EU and national stimulus packages take effect in the European countries, then an economic recovery and increase in investment can be expected by the end of the year. Visitors
