There’s always a great ‘community’ feeling to the wire and cable industry. Whether if it’s at an exhibition, on the golf course, at the hotel bar or, in this case, just a friendly company going a little extra for those less fortunate. I’m referring to Allied Wire and Cable on p11 of this issue. Each year this company chooses one week in December to be ‘charity week’ during which a percentage of all sales are donated to charity. That doesn’t have to be done. It’s a choice that Allied make each year. They include all staff who nominate their own charities and the customers even have a say, voting online to decide which organization is to receive the largest donation. The sixth annual week from 19 th -23 rd December last year raised a superb $15,818.78 , with CureSearch for Children’s Cancer group getting the largest donation. Autism Speaks, nominated by Wisconsin employee Rebecca Mertens, also had a share of the spoils with Allied donating $1,000 towards Mertens taking part in the Walk Now for Autism Speaks event in Milwaukee on 28 th April. It’s refreshing that we take just a little time now and then and do something good for others. Allied can be justifiably proud. David Bell Editor

A123 to supply the revolution

Going underground Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) will implement the recommendations in a report on the Morristown underground electrical network, recently accepted by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. According to the report, the underground network meets design, construction and reliability standards for the US electric utilities, however it outlined recommended enhancements to underground equipment and engineering, operations and inspection practices. The report recommendations include upgrading relays in the Morristown substation feeding the network - to shorten restoration times when outages occur; completing a study of a secondary portion of the network to determine if additional fuses are needed to help protect against equipment damage; and replacing two

A123 Systems is to supply six Grid Battery Systems TM (GBSs) to Northern Powergrid, an electricity distribution network operator that delivers power to over 3.8 million customers in the UK. The GBSs will be designed for peak-load shifting and to manage fluctuations in voltage on the UK’s power grid. Expected to be operational by the end of 2012, the systems will be deployed as part of the Customer-Led Network Revolution (CLNR), the UK’s largest smart grid project funded through the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets’ (Ofgem) Low Carbon Networks Fund. “The CLNR will evaluate a number of network technologies to accommodate increasing quantities of low-carbon loads and renewable generation necessary to meet the UK’s climate change goals. One aspect of this multifaceted project is to determine how the use of storage technology may reduce peak loading on our network and thereby offset the need for network reinforcement,” said Jim Cardwell, head of regulation and strategy at Northern Powergrid. The six GBSs that A123 will supply to Northern Powergrid include a 2.5MW system, two 100kW systems and three 50kW systems. Each will be designed to maintain these power capabilities for up to two hours, adding flexibility to the distribution network and helping to provide consistent delivery of reliable power to customers.

electrical switches in the underground network. The recommendations also include adding special guards at the Morristown substation to prevent animal-related power outages; conducting a pilot project to investigate available methods for securing manhole covers; and providing additional training for employees on vault inspections and data collection.

German offshore partnership

TenneT has entered into a partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation by agreeing to sell a 49 percent equity stake in two German offshore high-voltage cable projects, BorWin1 and BorWin2. Mitsubishi’s aggregate equity commitment will total €240 million. The two grid connections connect a number of offshore wind farms to the onshore electricity grid and have a combined total capacity of 1,200MW. The equity contribution of Mitsubishi represents 20 percent of the expected combined capital expenditures of approximately €1.2 billion for these two projects. TenneT will retain majority ownership and will continue to operate the connections. The underlying regulatory structure has been developed by TenneT in cooperation with the German regulator, Bundesnetzagentur. The transaction is

still subject to certain conditions, which are expected to be met before the Summer, and has been approved by TenneT’s sole shareholder, the Dutch State. Mel Kroon, TenneT CEO, regards the agreement as an essential step for the successful integration of renewable energy: “TenneT is making exceptional efforts in the connection of offshore wind energy in Germany. Currently we are working on nine projects to connect wind farms in the German North Sea. “These projects total to 5,000 megawatt of renewable electricity, enough energy to supply 5 million households. This long-term partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation is both a logical and important step in our considerable contribution to the transition to a sustainable energy supply.”

Prysmian’s record cable deal

The Prysmian Group’s contract for the development of Western HVDC Link, a new submarine high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector between Scotland and England, is believed to be the highest value ever awarded in the cable business at approximately €800 million. The project represents a milestone not only for its value but also in terms of technological features, setting new industry records. The interconnection, designed as a low loss high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, will operate at the record voltage level of 600kV, the highest ever reached by an insulated cable (to date the record is 500kV) with a rating of 2200MW - both currently unmatched for long-haul systems. The main purpose of the cable link is to connect renewable generation sources in Scotland to the consumption centers in England, although it also allows bi-directional flow of power. The choice of a submarine cable link versus a land interconnection offers benefits in terms of project approval and execution time.

Morgan Sindall has won a £14m project to design, supply, install and commission 13 kilometers of 132kV double circuit cable through Nottingham, UK. The project is being undertaken for Western Power Distribution and will help to reinforce the supply to two existing major substations, Nottingham East and Nottingham North, as well as providing a new supply from the 132kV substation at Stoke Bardolph. Morgan Sindall’s design business, Morgan Sindall Professional Services, has been appointed to carry out the electrical and civils design on the project. Jeff Lang, managing director of Utility Services at Morgan Sindall, said: “We are looking forward to commencing this project which is a key part of Western Power Distribution’s capital renewal program. Our specialist extra high voltage teams and equipment ensures that we are best placed to undertake the complex nature of this work.” Work will start on site this March and is due for completion in December 2013. The project is part of a three-year fluid-filled cable replacement program framework to which Morgan Sindall was appointed in October 2010.

European safety regulators have ordered the replacement of rivets in the nose of Airbus A380s after an engineering review found non-compliant components. The aluminum rivets are located at the junction of frame zero and fuselage stringer 21. Fatigue analysis showed that while structure limit load capability “is still ensured”, the junction “may not support ultimate load”. In a proposed airworthiness directive the European Aviation Safety Agency said that the rivets are “not in compliance with the certification requirements”. Rapid decompression could lead to in-flight loss of the radome and “adversely affect the structural integrity” of the aircraft, it added. EASA is intending to order that the aluminum rivets be replaced by titanium fasteners within eight months, on all aircraft which have not already undergone modification in production. The directive remains open to consultation until mid-March.

Nearly invisible fiber in the home OFS, a designer, manufacturer and supplier of fiber optic network solutions, has launched its EZ-Bend ® InvisiLight™ optical solution, said to provide virtually invisible, faster fiber routing inside homes and MDUs. John George, director, OFS global technical marketing, commented: “For service providers, this solution improves both sides of the business case equation: its virtual invisibility helps increase customer acceptance and revenues, and the roll-on installation process, auto-slack storage, and plug and play connectors speed deployment to help reduce costs.” FTTH providers are now deploying compact Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) deep into subscriber’s homes to facilitate in-home networking. However, some customers cancel service orders once they learn the installation requires unsightly conventional optical cables. Routing fiber behind walls is an option, but this is a slow and expensive installation unless wall ducts are in place and accessible. The EZ-Bend InvisiLight optical solution is said to solve this challenge with a 1mm diameter optical micro-cord that blends seamlessly with the interior decor. The installer uses a simple process to roll and adhere the micro-cord into grooves between ceilings and walls, walls and moldings, corners between walls, or directly onto moldings. Ultra high-density fiber-optic cables Optical Cable Corp (OCC) took the opportunity of the BICSI 2012 Winter Conference and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida, to unveil its HC series of ultra high-density fiber-optic cables. The new cables feature tight-buffered 12-fiber units, creating rugged cables with an outer diameter that OCC claims is much smaller than conventional cables using loose- tube construction. By combining the ruggedness of OCC’s tight-buffer technology with high-fiber density, the HC series cables are said to offer up to 20 percent reduction in diameter and weight, relative to conventional loose-tube cables. Suitable for direct pulling with wire mesh grips, the cables can help reduce costs by eliminating the need to splice outdoor cable to indoor cable at the building entrance. The HC series cables are currently available in fiber counts of 24 fibers to 288 fibers. “The HC-Series cable couples the density of a ribbon style fiber-optic cable with the ruggedness typically associated with OCC’s fiber optic cables,” said Ted Leonard, vice president of technology and engineering for OCC.
