Paws for thought when reading this issue of wiredInUSA. For whilst it is commonly accepted that dogs are a man’s best friend, they are also crime-busting and money-saving! Or at least ‘Jazz’, an English black labrador is. The pooch has been trained to become the first detection dog in the world to trace stolen metal (see p25). Dogs have long been used to sniff out drugs and explosives and now, forced into action as metal and cable theft continues, the UK police has enlisted the help of the four-legged variety. Metal theft costs the UK economy some £770m a year and there are about 1,000 incidents reported every week. So the UK police have trained Jazz to sniff out stolen metal in places it is hard for the humble officer to access – piled high in scrapyards and where any forensic markings are not immediately visible to the human eye. Jazz is already hard at work sniffing out SelectDNA forensic markings on a range of metals including copper, lead and aluminum, and simply touches the metal withhis nose to identify it as stolen. MAKING THENEWS DuPont wins ban on Kevlar rival DuPont Co, inventor of the high strength para-aramid fiber Kevlar, used in fiber- optic cables, has won a federal court order barring South Korea’s Kolon Industries Inc from making a competing version of the fiber for 20 years. relating to Kevlar. DuPont had sued Kolon in February 2009, accusing it of misusing proprietary information obtained from Michael Mitchell, a DuPont veteran who left the company in 2006 to start his own fiber business and later began working with Kolon.

In 2010, Mitchell pleaded guilty to theft of trade secrets and served most of an 18 month prison term. In issuing the 20 year ban on activity related to para-aramid fibers, Payne called Kolon’s use of stolen trade secrets “integral and essential” to its production of Heracron, a rival to Kevlar and Twaron, made by Japan’s Teijin Ltd. He also said the $919.9 million judgment alone was not an adequate remedy, explaining that Kolon would still be free to use the stolen trade secrets at DuPont’s expense, and that DuPont might have to go to South Korea to enforce the judgment. DuPont began selling Kevlar in 1965.

Kolon asked US District Judge Robert Payne in Virginia to put his permanent injunction on hold while it appeals, saying a ban would cause the “uncompensated death” of an entire business. Last September, a Richmond federal jury ordered Kolon to pay DuPont $919.9 million of damages for stealing trade secrets

Brighton-Best and Elgin forge alliance Brighton-Best International (BBI) has announced a new domestic alliance with the Elgin Fastener Group (EFG). EFG is comprised of companies manufacturing externally threaded, cold headed, off-standards and special fasteners. By partnering with BBI, EFG will be manufacturing standard fasteners in large volumes, utilizing a uniform head mark, EFG-USA. C&M Corp appointment US manufacturer of bulk cable, coil cords, and cable assemblies, C&M Corporation, has appointed Eileen Harvey to the position of industrial business manager. Harvey brings over 20 years of technical sales and marketing experience in the industrial market- place, most recently as the New England sales manager for Lapp Group. She was previously national distribution sales manager for both Igus Incand KabelschleppAmerica. Of Harvey, John Laskowsky, C&M’s president and CEO, commented, “She has a deep knowledge and understanding of critical customer needs around high flex applications for harsh environments which involve a significant cost of failure. Making light of a hairdo

The latest collaboration between Lady Gaga and the Haus of Gaga is a fiber optic wig, said to have been inspired by the animated Disney princesses including Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, Belle and Rapunzel.

The wig, hand made by Frederic Aspiras, can be seen in its full glowing glory in a video on the Lady Gaga LittleMonsters. com website. She describes the wig as, “...made up of a mixture of real human hair and the finest fiber-optics in existence - they move and feel like real hair. Bluebird deploys ADVA FSP 3000

In a statement, ADVA Optical Networking announced that Bluebird Network has selected the ADVA FSP 3000 for a government stimulus-funded project that will enable the extension of broadband services to underserved regions in Missouri. Bluebird’s Missouri Ultra-High Capacity Middle Mile project is supported by a $45 million American Recovery and Rein- vestment Act (ARRA) grant from the US Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and a $10.5 million in-kind contribution from the state

of Missouri, as well as private investors. The ADVA FSP 3000 supports up to 40 100Gbit/s secure and reliable wavelengths for multiplexing, transporting and protecting Bluebird Network’s array of high-speed data, storage, voice and video traffic. ADVA Optical Networking’s ROADM capability and RAYcontrol TM GMPLS control plane will allow Bluebird Network to use a combination of hardware pre-provisioning, point-and-click configuration and flexible provisioning.

HellermannTyton announces hiring plans

Milwaukee manufacturer HellermannTyton has recently announced a hiring spree. The company hosted a career fair in September, looking to fill 50 skilled technical positions and other departmental jobs, according to a spokesperson. The jobs included maintenance, automation and plastics processing technicians, production managers and supervisors. HellermannTyton provides systems and services for managing, routing, identifying and networking wire, cable and components, and supplies the automotive heavy equipment and electrical industries. The company will be opening its third Milwaukee manufacturing facility in spring 2013 and has seen double-digit growth in the past five years.

Zayo Group has acquired FiberGate Inc, a provider of dark fiber services. The acquisition adds 399 new route miles and 130,000 fiber miles in Washington DC, Virginia, Baltimore, and suburban Maryland to Zayo’s network. “As a result of the acquisition, we will have one of the most comprehensive fiber networks in the DC area of any provider,” said Dan Caruso, Zayo CEO. Zayo’s international network now connects over 9,000 on-net buildings, spanning 65,000 route miles in seven countries including 45 US states and Washington, DC. FiberGate offered dark fiber exclusively. Zayo plans to continue to offer dark fiber and expand the service portfolio to include lit bandwidth infrastructure services such as ethernet, IP and SONET. FiberGate has been providing dark fiber services to the federal government, large enterprise and carrier customers for almost 17 years. The footprint includes over 315 buildings (key government sites, carrier hotels, data centers, cell towers and enterprise buildings) across 779 route miles. Fiber optic network sold

APS to build 14MW solar facility

Arizona Public Service (APS) plans to build a new 14MW solar photovoltaic facility in Arizona, the Hyder II Solar Power Plant, and has begun the permitting process. The solar project will include over 71,000 single-axis tracker photovoltaic panels, expected to generate enough solar energy for 3,500 homes in the region. APS Energy Innovation general manager, Barbara Lockwood said this project is the sixth AZ Sun Project for the utility. “Through the AZ Sun Program, we are adding 200MW of solar photovoltaic power plants across the state by 2015. We expect that these plants will generate clean energy for at least the next 30 years,” she added. The projects, which are being designed and constructed by third party solar firms, will be financed and owned by APS. Commercial operation is expected begin in late 2013.

New photovoltaic (PV) projects on agricultural land are promoting rapid growth of distributed PV power generation in China, with more than 300MW of PV projects now being tracked in the NPD Solarbuzz China Deal Tracker report. An increasing number of PV project developers in central and eastern China are now prioritizing these new opportunities, in particular in the provinces of Xinjiang, Hunan, and Hubei. The China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group (CECEP) is currently targeting over 100MW of PV projects specifically within the agricultural segment. According to Steven Han, analyst at NPD Solarbuzz, “The agricultural PV market segment in China was previously overlooked by downstream PV suppliers and installers. However, with the threat of anti-dumping actions from the United States and Europe potentially restricting their available sales channels, creating additional demand locally is now essential for both module and balance-of-systems suppliers. “Greenhouses have become a popular choice for agricultural PV installations, because they offer benefits in addition to a supply of electricity,” added Han. “PV panels located on greenhouses can shield the sunlight, replace building materials, and add to the overall aesthetics.” Agricultural installations boost PV sales

CommScope Inc has successfully enabled a 100G ethernet (GE) data transmission over 430m of off-the-shelf multi-mode fiber optic cabling. In collaboration with Ixia, the public demonstration took place during Datacenter Dynamics Converged in Shanghai, using Systimax ® InstaPATCH ® 360 fiber cable assemblies and LazrSPEED ® 550 OM4 fiber. The success of the demonstration suggests that companies will be able to develop a future-proofed communications network that does not require re-engineering of existing networks or to deploy new cable when they evolve to 100G. “Businesses need to understand the importance of creating intelligent networks that are based on future-proofed communications framework, especially when two-thirds of network failure is because of cabling infrastructure,” said Jian Wu, national technical manager, Greater China, CommScope. “In China, a region where businesses put heavy emphasis on cost efficiency and high productivity, it is the quality of connection that counts the most, and this successful demonstration proves the value high-performance cabling infrastructure can bring.”

Toronto plans installations on city-owned centers

Toronto is installing over 8,000 solar panels across ten community centers and arenas. The National Post is reporting that the city has entered an agreement with Toronto Hydro to install 8,800 solar panels, expected to produce around 2,600MWh of electricity per year over the next 20 years. Through a contract with the Ontario Power Authority, the program holds expectations of bringing in around CAN$16 million by allowing Toronto to sell the generated solar power. Toronto is one of the latest cities in Ontario to participate in such a solar plan, which closely follows the one the city of Belleville implemented under a 20-year contract with the OPA. The panels installed on the buildings will have an average lifespan of 25 years, after which they will be salvaged. Installations began in September at the Mimico Arena, York Mills Arena and the Goulding Community Center. The seven remaining locations will see installations starting throughout the fall. The city noted that it plans to submit applications for added solar panels locations in October.

In a private offering General Cable Corp intends to offer $550 million of senior notes, due in 2022, according to a news release. The Highland Heights-based cable and wire manufacturer said the notes will be offered to qualified institutional buyers.Theproceedsoftheofferingwill be used to refinance its 7.12 percent senior notes due in 2017 through a redemption and its 0.875 percent senior convertible notes due 2013. As of 29 th June, maturities of the company’s long term debt during the 12 month periods beginning 29 th June 2012, through 30 th June 2017, were $229 million, $346 million, $5.5 million, $189 million and $201 million, respectively, and $177 million thereafter, according to its latest quarterly financial report. General Cable offers senior notes

MilAero Electronics Atlantic Inc has signed a $1.5 million contract to supply 12,000 cables to KVH Industries Inc of Rhode Island. KVH manufactures mobile satellite communications, guidance, and stabilization equipment for both military and commercial clients. Work began at MilAero’s manufacturing facility shortly after. In a smaller contract, MilAero has won a one year, $450,000 purchase order to supply 8,000 cables to Raytheon Co, one of the world’s biggest defense contractors. MilAero has outgrown its original premises, and is looking to the construction of a two story, 15,000ft 2 facility near Mount Hope Avenue in Dartmouth. Contracts mean growth

Valley Fastener Group (VFG) has purchased the assets of LMC. The newly created Adiabatic Precision Cut (APC) division of VFG specializes in the high velocity adiabatic impact production of solid pins and blanks, with precise cutting of complex shaped coiled wire, rod and bar. The patented, high speed Adiabatic metal forming process and press system produces tight tolerance parts from almost any material. Blanking and material cut services are also offered. There are now four Valley Fastener Group divisions: Valley Rivet, North Coast Rivet, Forgo Fasteners and the new Adiabatic Precision Cut division. VFG annually produces and supplies billions of rivets and cold-headed fasteners and specials to the automotive, electrical, sheet metal, electronics, appliance, furniture and other industries.

General Cable Corp has completed the acquisition of the North American portion of Alcan Cable. Dog sniffs out stolen metal

Jazz’s trainer explained, “As humans we can only search...in the line of sight, but dogs can search in 3D by using their noses. They can be incredibly accurate, and can pinpoint their target to within a couple of centimeters. “Jazz is able to touch the marked metal with her nose identifying the target scent of SelectaDNA, allowing officers to move in at this point and make further investigations.”

Repair completed in Irish Sea

MMT has completed the geophysical survey of the entire inner array grid cable route for Amrumbank West offshore wind farm (OWF) project for Siem Offshore Contractors GmbH. The survey included bathymetric and side-scan sonar survey as well as sub-bottom profiling. A magnetometer was piggy-tailed behind the towed instruments from the MMT survey vessel IceBeam for detection of unexploded ordnance (UXO). Based on the results of this initial magnetic anomalies survey, a ROV equipped with a gradiometer array was used for additional target inspections. The overall length of the geophysical survey was 550km within the OWF area of 36km². Geotechnical site investigations have been performed to verify the findings of the geophysical survey, whereby a.o. CPT tests were undertaken. The OWF is situated within the German Bight sector of the North Sea, north of the island of Helgoland and west of the island of Amrum.

Telecommunications and graduate of the Public University of Navarre, Montserrat Fernández-Vallejo has experimentally developed fiber-optic sensor networks for the remote monitoring of large infrastructures. For her PhD thesis she has managed to develop the largest network so far, measuring 250km, equipped with a multiplexing capability (enabling two or more information channels to be combined within a single transmission medium). This development in remote com- munication can enable new lines of research, andopenupa rangeof practical applications including the monitoring of intelligent or large infrastructures for which the sensor networks can be crucial. As Montserrat Fernandez explained: “With remote monitoring we can analyze a structure or large infrastructures like marine platforms from a central hub located tens or hundreds of kilometers from the infrastructure to which the sensors send the information without the need for any power source.” engineer,

Working for NSW as a joint venture, Osiris Marine Services and Nordic Offshore Marine mobilized the DP1 barge Atlantis for a full survey/diving/cable repair, complemented by a twin R2000 shallow water controlled flow excavation tool from subcontractor Reef Subsea Dredging & Excavation. The East West Interconnector Project (EWIP) consists of two HVDC and a fiber optic cable running 186km along the Irish Sea bed. The necessary remedial work involved repairing the fiber optic cable, and the installation of 94 subsea mattresses at different points along the cable route. Alexander Bornemann, project manager from NSW, said, “Taking [into account] all the challenges caused by seabed and weather conditions during the execution of [the] work, NSWmade the right selection of sub-contractor. Osiris Marine Services convinced by high performance, flexibility on site conditions as well as well maintained and up to date equipment.”

UC RUSAL presented its latest research in aluminum alloys and alumina production to the IV International Congress & Exhibition “Non-Ferrous Metals 2012” held in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, during September. More than 500 scientists, specialists across world metals industry development, took part in the forum, together with representatives of 180 companies from 20 countries. Demand from the Russian cable industry for aluminum alloys with rare earth and transition metals, and for aluminum- zirconia wire rod, is in response to the high deterioration level of national grid systems. RUSAL technologies enable the production of a wire rod with better mechanical characteristics, increased resistance to temperature and, as a result, with higher power transmission capacity. Another research area demonstrated at the congress was alumina production technology developed by RUSAL together with Orbite Aluminae, using acid instead of caustic soda.

Teknor Apex Europe has appointed Christopher G Smith to the position of new business development and technical project manager for non-automotive TPE markets. Working closely with customers, and coordinating with other members of Teknor Apex commercial and technical teams, Mr Smith will focus on projects in market areas of strategic importance to Teknor Apex Europe, such as consumer products and medical devices. In these sectors the company has introduced two broad families of TPEs: Medalist ® medical elastomers and Monprene ® styrene block copolymer-based compounds. “Chris brings to his new position more than two decades of plastics experience and has worked extensively in toolmaking, design engineering, and application development,” said Stef Hordijk, strategic market manager for the Thermoplastic Elastomer Division. “He will add new strength to Teknor Apex’s commitment to provide our customers with technical support from initial concept to commercial production.”

Global Marine Systems Energy Ltd (GME) has landed the first export cable at the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm, situated in Liverpool Bay, off the coast of North Wales. The cable was landed by GME’s recently launched vessel, Cable Enterprise , and is the first of four export cables to be installed at the project site. Each of the export cables are between 18km and 22km in length. Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm is one of the largest currently in construction in Europe and is being built by RWE npower renewables. Once operational, Gwynt y Môr will have an installed capacity of 576MW. The wind farm is due for completion in 2014 with 160 turbines producing enough electricity to supply 400,000 homes. Unlike traditional vessels, the Enterprise is designed to ground on the beach, allowing operations to be carried out to the high water mark, seamlessly continuing the installation where shore-based vehicles finish.

Carbon product producer Hanzhong Iron & Steel Group Company Ltd will expand its capacity with a new wire rod mill supplied by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies. Siemens will design and supply a Morgan no-twist mill, Morgan rod reducing/ sizing mill, pinch roll and laying head. In addition, Siemens VAI is designing shears, a Morgan Stelmor conveyor and the reform area of the new rod mill. The new equipment is designed to reach speeds of 112 meters per second. The mill will produce 5mm to 22mm diameter plain rod. Several local steel mills merged with Hanzhong in 2009 to consolidate the province’s steelmaking production for the local market and, after all restoration projects are complete, the company expects to have an annual steel capacity of over 10 million tons. The plant will be in Ding Jun Shan Town, Mian County in Shaanxi Province, China. When commissioned, the mill will produce 600,000 tons per year. Built in collaboration with CISDI Engineering Co Ltd the project is expected to begin production in early 2013.

In early September, Nexans announced completion of its acquisition of a 75 percent stakeintheShandongYangguNew Rihui joint venture, alongside its historical shareholder. This acquisition gives Nexans a strategic footprint in the rapidly growing Chinese energy infrastructure market. The majority stake was originally announced in June 2011, when Nexans signed an agreement with the Shandong Yanggu Cable Group to create a joint venture based on Shandong Yanggu’s power cable business in China. Shandong Yanggu will hold the remaining 25 percent. At the time of the agreement, the transaction was anticipated to take 6 to 8 months to complete, being subject to various conditions precedent including the approval of the Chinese regulatory authorities. Shandong Yanggu is among leading manufacturers of power cables in China, with three manufacturing facilities supplying extra-high and high voltage, medium voltage, and low voltage power cables to the State Grid Corporation of China, power generation groups and many other industries.

Fiber optics are also used as laser delivery devices for laser surgery in urology, cardiology, and ophthalmology applications. Other areas of fiber optic applications in the medical field include image transfer, medical X-ray, and sensors. Growing demand for fiber optics in the healthcare sector is pushing suppliers to expand product capacity, and manufacturers to focus on developing fibers that provide enhanced performance and control features. Fibers are coated with fluorescent dyes to enable them to transmit weak signals, or signals that have to go through curved paths in sophisticated instruments. Additionally, advancements in fiber optic networks are transforming the medical world by merging diagnostic radiology and communication technolo- gies.

A 26 mile NStar construction project to stretch a 345,000 volt transmission line between North Carver, through the Myles Standish State Forest to the Cape Cod side of the canal in Bourne, got underway during September. After three years in development, NStar says the $106 million dollar project will create local jobs, add to the tax base in Carver and Barnstable, and offer protection against major power outages. Walter Salvi, public relations manager for the project, is faced with concerns and complaints as the company adds 18 miles of new, taller monopoles and high voltage lines, and is clearing trees that encroach on the 330 foot right of way. Some of the trees are fully developed, and providing homeowners with a natural buffer between their property and the power lines which many are reluctant to see lost.

Electronics CA Publications, the electronics industry market research and knowledge network, has released a comprehensive global report looking at the medical fiber optics market. The market is forecast to reach US$1 billion by 2017, driven by the surging demand for medical fiber optic systems. Additionally, opportunities in the marketplace are also stemming from newer application areas, coupled with the increasing demand for surgical equipment for minimally invasive surgery. Of late, fiber optic sensors have gained prominence in the medical field, owing to their accuracy, small size, and safety. Fiber optics are primarily used for

Eng Dr Gabriel Aridru, the state minister for investment, predicted economic boom in theWest Nile region after the commissioning of the 3.5MW of Nyagak power dam. He said there will be a positive impact because a number of investors will move into the region to build factories, adding that this will in turn create jobs and economic opportunities unavailable elsewhere.

The NewVision website reports that a 3.5MW hydropower plant in the West Nile will help spur economic growth in the region. Michael Ozele, a resident of Zingili village, Paidha town council in Zombo district said of the project: “I’m very happy. This means that we can now charge our phones at a reduced price,” and he was optimistic that the electricity generated from water would be available for 24 hours a day, as promised. Another resident, Phiona Kwututy, said it would be an opportunity to establish small-scale industries, especially for juice and fresh fish, to help alleviate poverty in the area. She said, however, that it would

The Herald Sun has reported that Chinese manufacturer Anhui Joy Sense Cable Company has announced plans to set up a new base in Victoria, creating 200 new manufacturing jobs. According to the newspaper, the deal is worth AUS$200 million and was successfully negotiated during a trade mission to China. Victorian manufacturing minister Richard Dalla-Riva welcomed the agreement, calling it a significant investment into Victorian manufacturing. Anhui Joy Sense Cable will conduct commercial negotiations to decide the best site for the Victorian operation that will complement its three China-based factories. The company manufactures aluminum alloy cables for use in power distribution networks.

In an effort to address long-standing power shortages, Nepal Electricity Authority has recently sent its approval to India of the financial structure of a long awaited 140km cross border transmission line between Dhalkebar in Nepal and Muzaffarpur in India. It is hoped that the new Indo-Nepal cross border power transmission line will be in operation by 2015. The country is dependent on hydropower and, with only 700MW installed capacity against peak hour demand of 900MW, faces daily power cuts of up to 12 hours which, during the dry season, can increase to up to 18 hours in some areas. Nepal is estimated to have a commercially viable hydropower potential of 42,000MW.

China Steel Corp, a major steelmaker on the island of Taiwan, is scheduled to begin mass production of titanium wire rods in October; a project which the company is anticipating will prove very profitable in the long term. Executives at the company indicate that Taiwan is currently the world’s largest consumer of titanium, importing around 2,000 metric tons of the material every year. To help Taiwan reduce its dependence on imports of titanium, China Steel has established a joint venture with Walsin Lihwa Corp, a Taiwanese manufacturer of cables, wires and steel wire rods, to develop titanium metal and related applications. The joint development project aims for an initial annual output of 1,000 metric tons of titanium. China Steel’s executives indicated that titanium generates much higher margins than carbon steel, with a metric ton of pure titanium priced up to $37,500 compared to $680 for ordinary carbon steel of the same quantity. The higher grade Ti-64 can sell for $68,000, or even double that when accepted by and delivered to international electronic brands such as Apple.

The West Africa cable system (WACS) began operation in Botswana on 11 th September. Local media, The Monitor, reports that the government, through Botswana Telecommunications Corporation, and Namibia have entered a joint venture to invest in the WACS. Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) said in a statement, “The cable is designed to support present and future Internet, e-commerce, data, video and voice services. Namibia will operate and maintain the cable landing station, while BTC and other stakeholders will have access to the facility and be able to co-locate their services within the station.” BTC was able to cut its wholesale Internet bandwidth prices by 59 percent with the commissioning of the undersea cable. Running along the west coast of Africa, the cable links South Africa with the UK, covering a distance of 14,000km.

Joint steel venture

The Solomon Islands government will borrow from the Asian Development Bank (ABD) to fund an undersea optic fiber cable that will link Solomon Islands to the rest of the world. Solomons Oceanic Cable Company (SOCC) co-owned by Solomon Islands National Provident Fund (SINPF) and Solomon Telekom Ltd (STL) will own and operate the cable. Minister for finance and treasury Rick Hounipwela told Parliament that the government is expected to receive USD$7.5m in grants and USD$10.5m in loans from ADB. He said it would then lend the total to the company. Mr Hounipwela said that if the project proceeds, it would enhance Internet communications and reduce the cost of telecommunication services. He said the negotiations are well advanced and the conclusion will be known before the end of the year. The project will also include two domestic cables to be linked to Auki and Noro, to ensure that the benefits are distributed to more than 40 percent of Solomon Islanders. Undersea cable support

Based on relative statistics, China’s fastener output reached 2,679,669.29 tons in the first half of 2012. Zhejiang province contributed the most to the total, with an output of 923,248.59 tons, followed by Hebei province (444,557.95 tons), Sichuan province (241,506 tons), Jiangsu province (237,804.98 tons), Shangdong province (176,415.29 tons), Shanghai city (141,491.54 tons) and Anhui province (110,245 tons). Jiaxing, Ningbo and Wenzhou, all located in Zhejiang province, are the three largest fastener-manufacturing bases in China. From 20 th to 22 nd October 2012, Jiaxing will host Fastener Expo at Jiaxing International Convention and Exhibition Center. It is anticipated that the fastener exhibition will further boost the prosperity of the Jiaxing fastener industry. China’s fasteners output

Local media reports that the New Zealand-based cable company Hawaiki Cable intends to lay an undersea fiber optic cable from California to Hawaii, Auckland and Sydney, with connection points at Apia, Pago Pago, Norfolk Island, Noumea, Port Vila, Suva, Wallis and Futuna. Hawaiki Cable has also proposed connections to Tahiti and the Cook Islands. The news comes a month after the New Zealand-backed Pacific Fiber project failed to raise the necessary finance to link New Zealand with Australia. “We can talk about it (the Hawaiki project) now because I’ve had time to see the leaders of Samoa and American Samoa, and the president of New Caledonia, who are all pushing very strongly for this,” said Hawaiki’s Pacific Islands area manager, Marc Collins, to Cook Islands News. “Pacific Fiber went bankrupt...and the opportunity right now for our project is quite unique — island leaders are a little bit frustrated, and they want to see a cable.”

Bekaert has confirmed the successful closing of a joint venturewith theMalaysian steel group, Southern Steel Berhad (SSB), 55 percent owned by Bekaert and 45 percent by Southern Steel. As originally reported in May 2012, the joint venture deal consists of SSB contributing its interests in the Malaysian wire activities based in Shah Alam and Ipoh, and Bekaert bringing in the galvanized wire platform located in Karawang, Indonesia. The joint venture will serve customers in the Southeast Asian growth markets. The joint venture has been named Bekaert Southern Wire Pte Ltd with a registered office in Singapore. The results will be integrated in Bekaert’s consolidated statements as of 1 st September 2012.

Anti-theft cable

Nexans launched anti-theft cable solutions at InnoTrans in September.

Most cables are constructed entirely from valuable copper, so Nexans’ first approach reduces the recyclevalueof thecablewhilst maintaining the performance of the cable. The standard sized copper core conductor is protected by an outer layer of alternating copper and galvanized steel wires, with a rugged polyethylene outer jacket. The steel wires greatly complicate cable cutting using conventional tools, making it harder to steal, while the near impossibility of separating copper from steel reduces its value on the black market to a fraction of pure copper. After theft, copper cables are usually burnt to remove the outer insulation (and so destroy identification markings) before selling the copper back into the supply chain. Nexans has developed a cable that incorporates a coded fire resistant copper tape intertwined with the cable cores. Since the tape is embedded along the length of the conductor it is virtually impossible for the thief to remove it, and the markings make it easy to trace the origins of the stolen copper. These new patented anti-theft earthing cables are fully compatible in size with existing copper cables of equivalent performance, utilizing the same tools and

Testing times for rope

A wire rope test machine, said to overcome the flaws of conventional bending fatigue testers, has been developed by the rope failure analysis company Wire Rope Technology Aachen.

The new tester forces the rope to travel over a number of test sheaves, typically five, and run through the reeving system with no fleet angle. (Too large a fleet angle can cause the wire rope to climb the flange of the sheave and can also cause the wire rope to climb over itself on the hoist drum.) “After installing the rope, all you do is press a button to start the test. Then a hydraulic cylinder will put the rope under the required tension, and the rope will be cycled back and forth through the reeving system until the rope finally breaks. Then the analysis of the rope begins,” said company owner Roland Verreet.

A criticism held by Roland Verreet is that conventional test machines use a single test sheave and can fail to detect problems, such as incorrect back twist, which will create problems on a crane over time. E-commerce company US Cargo Control has introduced a new category of stainless steel cable railing products on its website. Cable rail systems are an excellent option for creating railings along decks, patios, stairs, or loft spaces in the home or office, or even around docks or platforms in industrial settings, as they provide a durable safeguard while allowing for an unobstructed view. A cable span runs horizontally from a fixed end post, through an intermediate post, and secured at an opposite fixed end post. Local building codes and guidelines dictate how many assemblies are needed for a single span but, in most cases, 11 cable assemblies are needed for a standard residential 36-inch rail height. All wire and assemblies are available in 1/8″, 3/16″, and ¼” diameters in a 1×19 wire construction, for a semi-rigid feel with minimal stretch. It can be safely bent at angles up to 45 degrees. Type 316 stainless steel wire is used, suitable for outdoor and indoor situations since it resists the elements, rust and corrosion.
