Introducing EcoCore TM The Next-Generation REELEX ® Box Package

#08 EDITOR

One of our stories this month cannot fail to grab yourattention. It isa little likebeing inaJamesBond movie until you realise it’s very real, worthwhile and should be applauded by all of us. We’ve all heard of the green argument and the climate change program, there’s proof that the polar icecap ismeltingandeveryone is looking for ways of reducing harmful emissions that damage our fragile earth. It seems that big business is now taking the warnings to heart and have joined forces with the US government in the hunt for a reliable, green and alternative power source (see page 9). Search engine giant Google and the US Department of Energy are offering up some $43m on a geothermal power development project to harvest energy from the dormant Newberry volcano in Oregon. Seattle’s AltaRock Energy and Davenport Newberry Holdings, Conneticut, are working together on the project which basically involves pumping an astonishing 24 million gallons of water into the side of the volcano and being able to retrieve it fast enough while hot enough to make it a reliable source of energy. Amazing. David Bell Editor

Economical. EcoCore replaces plastic tubes with easily-sourced (and very inexpensive) paper tubes and secures it to the package using a uniquely-designed locking ring purchased from REELEX.

Better. EcoCore is a one-tube-fits-all replacement for all REELEX pull-box packaginf and offers improved versatility and maximum payout performance for all products from Cat 6 to Coax to Fiber Optical Cables.

Smarter. In addition to a narrower profile and small package size, EcoCore uses a unique locking ring with pull-off tab that acts as a “freshness seal” - preventing premature access to the product and countering theft.

Green. EcoCore tubes reduce

plastic in the REELEX box by up to 80%, are recyclable and can be sourced from post-consumer recycled pulp. Simple box design uses less cardboard and a smaller footprint.

MAKING THENEWS

AltaRock Energy’s volcano project

AltaRock Energy of Seattle is working with Google and the US Department of Energy to see if heat locked inside a volcano in Central Oregon can be tapped as a cheap, reliable energy source.

With tech and government funding, AltaRock Energy is working with Davenport Newberry Holdings LLC of Stamford, Connecticut, on the geothermal power development project on the flanks of Newberry Volcano in the Deschutes National Forest, 20 miles south of Bend, Oregon. According to USA Today, the project includes a plan to pump 24 million gallons of water into the side of the dormant volcano this summer to see if the water can be recovered, fast enough and hot enough, to make it a reliable energy source. “We know the heat is there,” Susan Petty, president of AltaRock, told USA Today. “The big issue is, can we circulate enough water through the system to make it economic?”

If successful, the $43 million project could vastly expand the use of geothermal energy and give a big boost to a nascent green energy industry. It also could provide a cheap energy source for Google, Facebook and other big tech companies that have moved to Washington and Oregon to set up giant server farms for cloud computing data centers.

Cheap electricity proves a deterrent

IWCS 2011 conference The 60 th annual International Cable Connectivity Symposium drew over 1,000 participants to Charlotte, NC in early November 2011. The event featured nearly 100 technical papers, eight Professional Development courses and approximately 120 exhibit spaces. The Executive Track presented key information from expert industry analysts, and views of the future from top industry executives. Among the highlights of the 2011 event was a 60 th Anniversary party in the NASCAR Hall of Fame for all attendees in Charlotte. Guests were given an opportunity tonetworkwith industry colleagues and to make use of the NASCAR race simulators. The IWCS announced nearly $60k of scholarships and scholarship endowments in 2011. Assisted by a number of industry companies, the commitment to scholarship in support of the future is a central theme of the IWCS.

The organization also reported that the2011program included several papers from students. The 61 st IWCS International Cable Connectivity Symposium is scheduled for 11t h to 14 th November 2012 in Providence, Rhode Island. The Call for Papers will be issued in early 2012, and therewill bechanges in content and format to reflect the changing needs of the wire, cable and connectivity industries.

Specialists at Johnson Controls are finding that the availability of cheap energy is a big deterrent in persuading clients in the Middle East to look for energy cutting initiatives. In comparison to the west, where consumers are keen to cut energy consumption and costs, the Middle East is slightly less driven to implement energy saving and smart building devices. “In Dubai, they pay a lot more in terms of utilities than Saudi, so there is that added pressure to bring costs down,” said Samer Tabbara, regional business manager, energy solutions, Middle East. Azzam Messaykeh, regional executive director, Middle East, explained: “Compare the electricity tariffs of Dubai and Saudi. Dubai is three times higher than Saudi. When I put a business model in front of a Saudi developer and tell him I will operate his building more efficiently, it’s not really paying him out because the power is subsidized. Why should he come and buy from me? But if I propose a project for a UAE or Qatari client and guarantee them a saving, they will look at their business model, see the commercial sense in it as well as the benefit it will have on their sustainability image and will want to engage.”

Copper alternative

As copper theft continues to grow, and copper raw material costs increase, the use of copper clad steel alternatives has gained acceptance in more applications. GroundSmart is an electrical conductor with copper metallurgically bonded to a solid steel core. This solution makes it less susceptible to theft by increasing the resistance to cutting and drastically decreasing the scrap value. GroundSmart copper clad steel can be jacketed with a polyethylene coating and printed to disguise and distinguish the wire from solid copper alternatives. For inside plant bonding and grounding applications CommScope produces a copper clad aluminum version. The combination of these two metals results in a product said to be uniquely suited for electrical applications where both cost and weight-to-conductivity issues are important. Both solutions are accepted by the National Electrical Code (NEC) as alternatives to solid copper.

CommScope Inc has developed GroundSmart, a copper-alternative grounding wire designed for use in subsurface grounding grids.

Nexans’ limiter goes live Picture : www.bigstockphoto.com ‘Spring’ Photographer - ‘ Rafal Steciuk’

Nexans has successfully commissioned what is believed to be the world’s first resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) based on second-generation superconductor tapes. The SFCL, equipped with superconducting elements developed in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, has been installed on behalf of Vattenfall Europe Generation AG to provide short-circuit protection for the internal medium voltage power supply that feeds coal mills and crushers in the Boxberg lignite power plant in Saxony, Germany. The current limiter works in a similar way to the low voltage safety cut-out in domestic homes, but operates on the medium/high voltage network. Under normal circumstances, its superconducting elements allow the electricity to flow unhindered and with practically no resistance. If a critical current level is exceeded, such as during a short circuit, the conductor drops out from its superconducting state

Only a precisely defined residual current will then flow. This enables the device to protect all the downstream components, such as switchgear, from the damaging overloading of a short circuit.

EUROPE NEWS

The SCL responds to a short circuit without an external trigger signal. The new current limiter is based on superconducting tapes made of YBCO (yttrium barium copper oxide) also known as coated conductors. At temperatures lower than –180°C the thin ceramic layer becomes superconducting and can conduct electricity approximately 10,000 times better than copper.

Power links Sweden and Finland

ABB has successfully commissioned a power link between Finland and Sweden. The HVDC (high voltage direct current) Fenno-Skan 2 link is a cable-based power transmission system that enables the exchange of an additional 800MW of power between the two countries, mitigating transmission bottle-necks in the region. The Fenno-Skan link is owned and operated by Fingrid and Svenska Kraftnät. The installation includes two converter stations, one situated in Rauma, on the Finnish side, and the other in Finnböle, in Sweden. The newly commissioned link will run in parallel with Fenno-Skan 1, delivered by ABB in 1989 and providing a bipolar link to enhance the capacity for power trading and improve the security of supply in the region. On the Swedish side, the converter stations for Fenno-Skan 1 and 2 are located 70km from each other, due to AC grid constraints. “In addition to enhancing capacity, facilitating power trading and improving security of supply in the region, this link will also help to improve grid reliability,” said Martin Gross, head of the Grid Systems business, a part of ABB’s Power Systems division. ABB has over 70 HVDC projects around the world and a combined transmission capacity of around 60,000 MW.

A joint venture of AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, Babcock Networks Ltd and Mott MacDonald Group has been awarded a five-year extension by National Grid to its existing five-year Electricity Alliance West contract to upgrade overhead power lines and underground cables across the western half of England and all of Wales. The extension, with an estimated value of around £650 million (US$998 million) will see the joint venture continue to provide engineering, management and construction services until 2017. AMEC and Babcock International plc are the major partners with 47.5% share each. Peter Boreham, UK construction director for National Grid, said: “In the period up to 2021, National Grid expects to invest around £20 billion in our gas and electricity transmission infrastructure to support the UK’s growing energy needs. this unprecedented level of growth and the continuation of our alliance partnerships will play a pivotal role in successfully delivering that forecasted increase, with a continued focus on delivering our work safely, efficiently and sustainably.” “Our construction division has a major role to play in supporting

Wire rope manufacturer Bridon International is investing £30 million in a new plant in the UK. The new facility - expected to be fully operational by the end of 2012 - will produce multi-strand ropes in gross package weights of up to 650 tonnes. The site will include a closer machine, capable of drawing together thousands of wire strands into a single rope. Bridon’s closer is believed to be the first of its type capable of making a 600 tonne rope in a single pass, enabling the production of longer, higher-capacity ropes in a single piece and avoiding the need for multiple passes. Bridon’s closer also boasts 24 bobbins (15 and 38 tonne capacity), giving it the ability to make complex ropes. The facility’s deep-water port-side location will allow Bridon to reduce delivery timescales and order lead times for customers. “Bridon Neptune Quay has been built to help us solve our customers’ most significant technological challenges - whether it is reaching new depths off the coast of Brazil, or operating in some of the most challenging environmental conditions on earth,” said Jon Templeman, chief executive of the Bridon Group. The development has been awarded a grant from the UK government’s Regional Growth Fund.

Torresol Energy, a joint venture between Spain’s Sener and Abu Dhabi’s Masdar, plans to invest up to $5 billion to build concentrated solar power plants (CSP) in Spain, the US and the Middle East. Enrique Sendagorta, president of Torresol Energy, said the company was aiming to add about 6,000MW of capacity over the next three years, and that one of the plants could be built in Abu Dhabi. “We are developing a pipeline of projects in Spain, the US and in the Middle East North Africa region,” he told Reuters at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi. “The investment would range between $3.5 billion to $5 billion,” he said. Sendagorta said the firm is optimistic of securing funding for the upcoming projects despite tough market conditions. “Foreign banks are financing solar plants because it represents a steady cash flow,” he said. Torresol Energy, a 60/40 joint venture between Sener and Abu Dhabi government-owned green energy firm Masdar, connected two new 50MW solar plants in Spain to the grid during January 2012. Between them, Valle 1 and Valle 2 are expected to produce 160GWh of carbon-free electricity per year. Abu Dhabi is aiming for 7% of its electricity to be derived from renewables by 2020.
