A little part of Düsseldorf became a small corner of America last week. Pre-wire 2012 optimism turned into ‘really excited’ and ‘amazing’ responses froma number of American companies as thousands turned out to witness the new technology, the advances made over recent years and tocatchupwithprospectivenewclients. Business was brisk in all the halls and the American booths - situated near the main north entrance - were difficult to ignore. A number of friends, old and new, that I spoke to were all excited about the show and the inquiries they received. If it all turns into concrete orders, the upward trend in the US - including adding employees to the burgeoning wire and cable industry - could well be accelerated. It would be remiss of me not to say thank you for the warm welcome I and other members of the wiredInUSA team received. We hope to return the compliments by keeping you informed on all the latest news from the US and by catching up with you at Wire Expo in Dallas next month. David Bell Editor

Atkore announces CFO
New Zealand contract
Completion of nuclear code
Ultrasonic splicing Sonobond’s vice president, Melissa Alleman, describes the company’s Dual Head SpliceRite™ as “unequaled in its handling of large wire bundles.” She says, “This ultrasonic wire splicer is the latest in our SpliceRite series.”
TPC Wire & Cable Corp is adding the nuclear quality code 10CFR50 appendix B to the current ISO 9001:2000 quality assurance program. The company plans to meet those requirements in June of this year. The code 10CFR50 appendix B reads, “Quality assurance criteria are applied to the design, fabrication, construction, and testing of the structures, systems, and components of the nuclear power plants.” The code is written by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and has 18 points of measurement. TPC has been compliant with the ISO 9001 quality assurance program for 15 years. A GAP analysis was contracted to identify the areas that did not meet the NRC guidelines for nuclear facilities.
TE Connectivity Ltd has been selected by Chorus New Zealand Ltd to supply connectivity products for Chorus’ existing network infrastructure and for the company’s part in delivering the New Zealand government’s ultra-fast broadband (UFB) initiative. Chorus awarded TE a contract worth approximately US$67 million over a four-year period, with an option to extend the contract for an additional two years. TE will supply a wide range of connectivity solutions including optical fiber distribution frames and other fiber connectivity solutions. TE employs over 200 people in New Zealand.
Atkore International has appointed James A Mallak to the position of chief financial officer, replacing Karl Schmidt who is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities. With 35 years of financial experience, Mr Mallak will be responsible for SEC reporting, control and accounting, treasury, tax and internal audit. He will be located at Atkore International headquarters in Illinois. Atkore is a manufacturer of galvanized steel tubes and pipes, electrical conduit, armored wire and cable and metal framing systems.
“ It can reliably weld stranded copper wire bundlehaving cross-sections of 48 to 100 mm 2 . It even accommodates lightly tinned or oxidized wires up to 60 smm 2 without pre-cleaning... accomplished in a single pulse. All this makes the Dual Head SpliceRite ideal for fast, dependable, cost-efficient ultrasonic splicing of the heavy-duty cables used in wire harnesses for cars, trucks, trains, industrial machinery, and similar applications.” Ultrasonic metal welding is a frequently used method of assembling wire harnesses, creating solid-state metallurgical bonds with high conductivity. This is accomplished without the need for filler metal materials and without clipping, soldering, crimping, or dipping. The process does not produce arcs, sparks, or fumes and does not result in melting of the weldment. Sonobond Dual Head SpliceRite consists of two ultrasonic transducers and couplers one above and one below the weld area plus a set of pneumatically driven jaws. These jaws gather the wires tightly to a preset width. The upper tip then descends to complete the compressing of the bundle and ultrasonic power is applied. When the cycle ends, the jaws open so the wires can be removed. A support for the wire array can also be integrated into the tooling system if necessary. The process is said to produce no waste and consume only minimal energy.

Heated fabric using carbon nanotube coated fibers Kuraray Living has developed a heating fabric using CNTEC, a carbon nanotube coated electro-conductive fiber. The fiber was co-developed with Hokkaido University and others. “This product uses conventional technology for the polyester fibers, and carbon nanotubes, a cutting-edge material, as a coating for the fibers. The fibers are woven into a textile, and when electricity is passed through them, they give off heat,” a spokesman revealed. The nanotubes are applied using conventional dye-printing technology, with a carbon nanotube network forming on the surface of every filament in the multi-filament structure. The resulting fabric is thin, lightweight, flexible and soft, and has a high level of washing durability. It recently won an award from the Japanese Ministry of Trade, Economy and Industry. Suggested uses for the fiber include USB-powered tabletop heaters and heated cushions as well as heated car seats and carpets. By taking advantage of the fact that the whole surface heats up uniformly, Kuraray is also developing a waterproof snow-meltingmat. The technology continues to be field-tested by Hokkaido University. New 120 Gbps active optical cable Emcore Corp is sampling a 120 Gbps CXP active optical cable to customers. wire Düsseldorf this year: ENKOnail+ is a new NI02 machine, the first of the ENKOnail+ machines to appear in an upgraded version with release later this year. The upgrade includes features such as the disco variator replaced by a robust and maintenance-free servomotor drive, a new improved system for insertion timing, larger feed rollers with longer life, and exhaust air connections for efficient dust evacuation. The six PLC-controlled ENKOnail+ machines produce up to 2,000 nails per minute. Also on show was a high-speed in-line nail manufacturing line with an ENKOnail+NH01 nail machine for manufacturing short nails of 1.8–2.87mm diameter and 32–65mm length. The machine on display was set up with the ENKOroll thread-rolling machine, type TA01, designed for making screw shank or annular nail profiles with a production speed of up to 2,500 nails per minute.
Emcore’s 120-Gbps CXP active optical cable is a high-density, low-weight, edge-mounted, bidirectional interconnect that can reach up to 100m with what the company describes as an “exceptionally low” bit-error rate. This equates to significantly less performance degradation over longer distances, compared to traditional copper cables. The CXP active optical cable is also over 60 percent lighter, with a bend radius said to be 70 percent less than 26-AWG copper cables. The combination of lower weight, smaller bend radius, and the flexibility of the cable make it easier to install, maintain, and repair cluster cabling without straining server connectors, or affecting neighboring cables, the company says. The Emcore CXP active optical cable is hot-pluggable and fully compliant with the CXP multi-source agreement (MSA) and RoHS 6/6. “Our 40-Gbps Quad Data Rate (QDR) cables are currently deployed in two of the top five supercomputers in the world,” commented Jaime Reloj, Emcore’s vice president of business development. “By leveraging our next-generation vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) and photodetectors, we will continue to advance the technology for high-performance computing applications.” Software for metal forming Metal Forming Systems develops and supplies process design and finite element analysis (FEA) simulation software for the metal forming industry. The company’s software products include ‘Nagform’ for the design of forming sequence and ‘Nagsim.2D / Nagsim.3D’ for the simulation of forging processes by the finite element method.
Greenpas cables , manufactured by Tele-Fonika Kable, feature a three-layer insulation structure. The core wire is a conductor of an alloy of Al-Mg-Si, sealed with a special swelling powder serving as a barrier to prevent longitudinal migration of moisture. A semi- conducting layer is responsible for the uniform distribution of the electric field. A further insulating layer is a thermoplastic polyethylene LDPE. The outer casing is made of thermoplastic HDPE, immunized to UV radiation and weathering. The use of thermoplastic polyethylene enables full recycling of the materials after use. Compared to traditional PAS wires (with one layer of insulation) Greenpas cables are characterized by higher insulation resistance and insulation resistance to partial discharges and sliding discharges. The wires are more robust than PAS wires, and provide a longer period of safe operation. Enkotec on show Enkotec demonstrated three nail manufacturing lines at its booth at

Asian super grid targets Mongolia Desert solar energy could be powering homes in Russia, Japan, and China under plans by Desertec and backed by the Japanese Renewable Energy Foundation (JREF). The two organizations have partnered to promote the creation of a new electricity grid to connect solar power from deserts in Mongolia and China, to cities across East Asia, including fast-growing markets like Vietnam.
energy capacity of 2.6 million megawatts. Bloomberg estimates this figure to be seven times that of all the world’s operational nuclear reactors. The Gobi Desert is estimated to be the third largest potential source of solar energy in the world and also experiences steady, strong wind speeds making it ideal for both technologies. “Establishing an Asian super grid will be challenging and require a high-level of international collaboration, but its benefits make it worth the effort,” said Kåberger. The grid would use special transmission lines that lose low levels of power, allowing electricity to be distributed over thousands of kilometers. JREF was formed in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident to promote the development of renewable energy in the country.
“Technologies to harness solar and wind energy have improved dramatically in the last few years,” said Dr Tomas Kåberger, chair of JREF executive board. “Combined with modern power transmission technologies, renewable energy can support the long-term economic prosperity of the region.” According to the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Mongolian National Renewable Energy Center, Mongolia has a potential renewable

EHV expansion
Services disrupted by fiber cable cuts
Kenya Power to fund underground cabling
Grid solution for Kuwait
Doha Cables, the Qatar-based manufacturer of high voltage cables, has announced plans to expand the manufacture of its 400kV and 500kV cable ranges. Ahmed Fathy El Sewedy, vice president of the Elsewedy Cables subsidiary, said that plans are underway to expand production. “We are currently working on expanding the manufacturing of our extra high voltage cables to produce 400kV and 500kV cables. We are also expanding in the field of super conductors,” El Sewedy said. With Qatar’s goal to expand the local tourism industry to accommodate both the 2020 Olympics and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, “There has been an increase in the number of projects in the field of infrastructure, as well as a growing demand in the building sector,” he added. “Globally there has been a general decline in demand as well as an oversupply of cables in the market. We’re working to not only be a cables provider, but also to be a solutions provider. This will allow us to be competitive in both service and supply,” El Sewedy explained. He said that the company planned to expand its operations to some of the fastest growth economies in the world.
During mid-March, Altech Kenya Data Networks experienced service degradation as a result of three major cuts on its core fiber on the Mombasa-Nairobi route. Altech KDN, Seacom’s anchor tenant in East Africa, said the fault affected KDN’s primary and secondary fiber backhauls to and from Mombasa thus causing downtime for internet services. The first fault was located near the Miritini area on 13 th March, occasioned by another operator who was restoring their cable. The second cut occurred on 14 th March near the Jomvu area, where KDN’s cables were exposed by a road contractor. The cable was consequently vandalized, but the company’s engineers managed to resolve the fault in less than two hours. The third cut was damaged by a contractor creating a road diversion for access between Mazeras - Miritini. CEO Shahab Meshki has since apologized to customers for the outages and said that his technical team was working round the clock to minimize the downtime experienced and restore services. He also indicated that Altech is working to increase resilient routes on this and other routes.
Alstom Grid has been selected by the Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) to further modernize its grid operations and enhance the management of its network assets through the implementation of a fully integrated grid management solution. The project will include an upgrade of Kuwait town district control center’s energy management system (EMS), a new integrated distribution management e-terradistribution solutions, Alstom will create a single system for managing the medium- and high-voltage operations of the Kuwait Town District control center. In addition to managing the real-time operations of the grid, the system access will be extended to maintenance departments to better manage MEW’s assets, review their health index, and decide on appropriate maintenance strategies. This new approach combines the previously separated operation and maintenance processes, allowing the operators to have a holistic view of the entire system for increased reliability and efficiency. system (IDMS) and an asset management system (AMS). AMEinfo reports that, through its advanced e-terraplatform and
Kenya Power plans to raise 20 billion shillings ($241.7 million) to convert overhead power lines into underground cables. Kenya Power is the sole transmission and distribution utility in east Africa’s largest economy, where blackouts are common due to generation shortfalls and an aging grid. Joseph Njoroge, the chief executive officer of the power firm, said in a statement that the underground project is set to begin next year, and will convert a total of 2,215km of power lines in three major cities Nairobi, Mombasa and Ki- sumu. Njoroge said his company was considering a proposal by the Chinese company, China National Machinery Equipment Import and Export Corporation (CMEC) to carry out the underground cabling in Nairobi. The removal of the overhead network will start in the capital, which is the most affected by frequent blackouts, some of which are a result of motorists knocking down electric poles.
