National Park plans improvements to service and scenery M A K I N G T H E NEWS

Yellowstone National Park has asked for public comment on its proposal to improve telecommunication services in the park’s developed areas. The proposal is to lay 187 miles of fiber optic cable along the park’s roads. Rubber-tracked vehicles would be used to install the cable underground “within the existing road corridor, immediately adjacent to and/or directly into the roadbed.” The proposal also calls for the removal of five microwave radio reflectors installed in the park’s backcountry in 1980. “Currently, these reflectors are an essential component of the park’s microwave radio telecommunication system,” Yellowstone explained. “The existing microwave radio system is the only means of telecommunication (telephone, 911 and computer networks) to the park. Each reflector is

about 28 feet high and 24 feet wide. Broadband over fiber optic cable could replace this antiquated system. Due to extremely remote duty stations, recruitment [and] retention for both the NPS and its business partners is severely affected by a lack of consistent and reliable connectivity.” Yellowstone estimates that 8% of the park currently has cellular coverage. “The proposal would not expand authorized cellular phone coverage areas in the park but would substantially improve coverage quality in existing developed areas,” Yellowstone added. ”This proposal is consistent with Yellowstone National Park’s wireless communications services plan.”

No new cellular towers would be installed under the proposal.

Import investigation

Swedish grid calls for reinforcements

Photo by Kristophers Ozolins on Unsplash

The European Commission has launched an investigation into the importation of fiber optical cables from China, following a complaint by Europacable on behalf of its membership. In its official notice of the action, the commission said: “The European Commission has received a complaint … on protection against dumped imports from countries not members of the European Union, alleging that imports of optical fiber cables originating in the People’s Republic of China are being dumped and are thereby causing injury to the Union industry.” According to Europacable, Chinese imports rose by 150% from 2016 to 2019. In 2019, approximately 1.2 million kilometers (745,000 miles) of cable were installed in Europe, with between 15% and 20% originating from China. European Commission anti-dumping investigations take up to 15 months, but provisional duties can be put in place within eight months. If imposed, final tariffs or penalties normally apply for five years.

NKT has entered into a frame agreement with Ellevio for low and medium voltage power cables to reinforce and develop the power grid in central Sweden. The four- year agreement is for cables with voltage levels between 1kV and 36kV for projects including the replacement of overhead lines with underground power cables and reinforcing the power grid in urban areas around Stockholm. For NKT and Ellevio the newly signed frame agreement is a continuation of an existing partnership covering more than the supply of power cables. Peter Marcusson, Nordic director of sales for utilities at NKT, said: “With the new frame agreement we continue our engagement in ensuring the grid has the capacity needed to be ready for the increased electrification driven by urbanization and the transition to renewable energy.” “Part of our long-term relationship with Ellevio also includes the collaboration on the development of new products and methods to future proof the power grid in the region. Part of the infrastructure is aging and needs to be reinforced and expanded tomeet the growing demand for electricity, added Mr Marcusson.

Joint venture can get to work

Carbon fiber in cable production

Brian Kim, CEO of Essex Furukawa

New commercialization of a communication cable from LS Cable and System LS Cable and System has commercialized a communication cable that uses carbon fiber as a shielding material, rather than the conventional copper or aluminum. Carbon fiber is only a quarter of the weight of steel, but is ten times stronger and seven times more elastic. Using carbon fiber makes the cable up to 20% lighter, and adds flexibility and durability. If carbon fiber is applied to automotive wires and cables, weight savings of up to 25kg per vehicle are possible. LS C&S has finished preparation for mass- production of LAN cables for equipment operation and system management in smart factories and buildings, and is now applying the new technology toall industrial cables. “It’s hard tofindacaseof commercialization of cables to which carbon fiber is applied anywhere in the world,” said Roe-hyun Myung, president and CEO of LS C&S. “We are making efforts … through continuous [research and development] in new materials and environment-friendly products.”

Superior Essex Inc and Furukawa Electric Co have announced the finalization of a global joint venture, expanding upon a previous magnet wire partnership. The combined company will operate as Essex Furukawa Magnet Wire LLC, using the “Essex Furukawa” brand. Customers of Essex Furukawa are expected to benefit from an expansion of custom product solutions, the sharing of best practices, and better service for customers from additional points of shipping, expanded global sales and technical teams, increased global rod and foundry resources, and a diversified global development team. “This is an exciting day, not only due to the finalization of the Essex Furukawa deal, but also as it marks the creation of a technological powerhouse in the magnet wire industry that can service many of the leading enterprises,” said Brian Kim, CEO of the newly formed Essex Furukawa. There will be no immediate or material change to the organization evident to the customer, though Essex Furukawa may pursue some restructuring.

Power boost

Stepping up aluminum wire production

Vietnam’s has celebrated the launch of a 450MW solar farm and power transmission system built in the country’s Ninh Thuan province. Representing a $603.4 million investment, the Thuan Nam solar plant, with 500kV transformer station and 220/500kV power line network, will boost Vietnam’s grid capacity and help resolve nationwide power shortages, while increasing the share of renewables in the energy supply. By mid-2019 Vietnam had 4,464MW of solar farms, most located in Ninh Thuan province. The surge in capacity led to overloading of the grid, especially in the Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces: Trungnam said some solar farms had been forced to reduce their capacity by up to 60% for the sake of grid stability. The situation prompted the company to invest in two transformers and 17km of power lines, together with the country’s largest solar farm. Supported by a fast-track procedure, Trungnam completed the entire project in only 102 days, the company said. Trungnam Group

LS Cable & System employees are producing aluminum cables for electric vehicles. LS Cable and System has started mass production of aluminum wires for electric vehicles, and has developed a new facility exclusively for aluminum wire production. Major automotive electronics companies in Japan and elsewhere are also building aluminum-only facilities because, when production facilities for copper and aluminum wire are combined, copper particles can corrode the aluminum. LS Cable currently supplies Korea’s largest automotive manufacturers, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, and is expecting the proportion of aluminum wires in the Korean wire market will be more than 30% by 2025, compared with around 5% at present. “Through LS Alsco, a subsidiary that specializes in the aluminum business, we can supply high-strength aluminum and produce them in batches from materials to finished wire products,” the company said. “We are also considering additional investments as we are about to sign a supply contract with a global wiring harness company.”

High-tech rewind Windak has supplied its latest rewind line, OW26T-UW26T, to a major fiber optic cable manufacturer in the USA. The unit’s main feature is the integrated SafeWind unit, which enhances the laying quality and ensures safety during the winding process. The laying unit has adjustable guide rollers for the correct cable width and it is driven by a motion control drive and AC motor. Laying pitch is set on the main panel and turning points are set and controlled by a recipe memory. All manual functions - including turn point while running in automatic pitch - can be fine-tuned by remote control during the winding operation. The laying unit is traversed to the side for loading and unloading of the reels and has 16-inch vertical adjustment to have the cable come straighter to the reel. Maximum reel size is 2.59m, and maximum weight is 7,250kg. Maximum achievable line speed is 200mpm in “speed” mode. An integrated laying unit is mounted on the take-up.

Wear your heart rate on your sleeve? Portland-based Liquid Wire produces advanced fluid circuits on both plastic and textile substrates using a metal gel based on a patented non-toxic gallium alloy modified with proprietary additives. The resulting circuit consists of fluid interconnects trapped in soft elastic materials, duplicating the mechanical behavior of a moving human body. This flexible circuitry allows sophisticated sensing and data processing functions to be directly integrated into form-fitting garments for medical wearables, safety clothing, or for non-wearable applications such as in robotics or aerospace. Performance garments, however, need regular laundering, subjecting them to heat and abrasion conditions that few electronics can withstand. In October the company announced that its stretchable circuitry had passed a stringent wash test regimen required by performance apparel makers. Jorge Carbo, innovation director of Liquid Wire, said: “Through a third-party validated wash test program with the textile experts at Hohenstein, we are pleased to have delivered on this promise of making our invisibly integrated electronics something

that customers can count on in their next- generation garments.”

the cables are compatible with MSA OEM platform hardware and are fully compliant with OEM equipment warranties. Dustin Guttadauro, L-com’s product line manager, said: “By supporting multi-source agreement, these DAC cables are able to work with a multitude of different vendors’ hardware including switches, routers and servers.” Rugged test cables Fairview Microwave, an Infinite Electronics brand, has launched a new series of flexible vector network analyzer (VNA) test cables. The new high frequency VNA test cables are designed for phase stability of ±6° at 50GHz and ±8° at 70GHz, as well as voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of 1.3:1 at 50GHz and 1.4:1 at 70GHz. The 50GHz assemblies are terminated with 2.4mmconnectors, while the 70GHz versions use 1.85mm connectors. Braided stainless steel armoring around the coax provides a rugged but flexible cable with a flex life of over 100,000 cycles, making the cables suitable for semiconductor probe testing, precise bench top testing, and for laboratory production testing.

Liquid Wire’s metal gel sensors measure respiration and joint flexion, and, Carbo added “temperature, heart rate, and other biometric sensor capabilities are also embeddable into Liquid Wire soft circuits.” New line of DAC cables L-com has launched a new range of direct- attached copper (DAC) cables, designed to provide high speed connectivity for data center and enterprise networking applications. The cables are designed in accordance with industry standards for applications requiring SFP-style cables and connectors. The new DAC cables utilize standard SFP+ and SFP28 transceivers attached to copper- based twin-axial cable. Both active and passive options are available in speeds of 10Gbps or 25Gbps. Coded for MSA (multi-source agreement),
