Fiber spread
in Peru
Peru has launched its national optical
fiber backbone network (RDNFO) project
in Lima’s Carabayllo district.
The 13,500km network aims to bring
higher speed, lower cost Internet access
to the provinces as well as improve state
education and health services.
President Ollanta Humala said: “This
great step forward towards optical fiber
[implementation] opens up a new digital
world,” adding: “Thanks to this initiative,
Peru will be able to enter the digital age.”
Mr Humala announced that over 400,000
tablets will be acquired by the state to
expand technology at national schools.
RDNFO is designed to interconnect 180
of the country’s 196 provincial capitals,
at a cost of $333 million. The project
was motivated by the demand for
broadband services in the interior of the
country, mainly in Peru’s highland and
jungle areas.
