FROM 25 th February 2015 all new buildings in Ghana must have valid wiring certificates to avoid having their supply cut off from the national grid. This is just one of the measures being introduced by the energy commission to regulate the operations of electrical engineers, to uphold professional standards, and to protect life and property. The commission has instituted a certification scheme for electricians across the country. Its principal programme officer, Solomon Sarpong, has said that electricians who fail to comply with the directive will be prosecuted. “The certification programme seeks to inject some professionalism into the electrical wiring industry. Electrical wiring has a lot to do with the safety of persons and property because faulty wiring consequently causes a lot of fire outbreaks, among others. “The Electrical Wiring regulation 2011 (LI 2008) passed by parliament in 2012 has three key objectives: who qualifies Tyre cord demand tires Belgian steel wire and cable maker Bekaert reported that its 2014 operating profit rose at a slower rate than anticipated, blaming a slowdown in the Chinese market for tyre reinforcing wire. The group, whose steel wire is said to feature in 25 per cent of the world’s automotive tyres, said earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) was $195 million in 2014. However, sales were largely in line with analyst expectations, and core profit was above the consensus. “Tyre cord activities in China did deteriorate towards year-end 2014 and impacted our annual results on some key performance criteria, compared to the most recent analyst estimates,” Bekaert confirmed. In December, Chinese manufacturer Shougang issued a profit warning, stating that selling prices for steel cords had fallen in the second half of the year. Private equity firm Actis, and Mainstream Renewable Power, have launched a pan-African renewable energy generation platform, Lekela Power. By 2018 Lekela Power will provide between 700MW and 900MW of wind and solar power across Africa. Mainstream and Actis have two previous partnerships, in South Africa and Chile. Lekela Power will operate in a similar fashion to the existing partnerships, with Mainstream taking responsibility for project management and plant operation and maintenance. Mainstream has announced the start of construction for three wind farms in South Africa to form the core of the Lekela platform. The projects, with a combined capacity of 360MW, are located in the country’s Northern Cape and were awarded to Mainstream as part of the government’s renewable energy procurement programme. They are expected to reach commercial operation beginning Addressing the power balance in Africa
in 2016. Mainstream also has a pipeline of other projects across Africa, including the 225MW Ayitepa wind project in Ghana, which will transfer to the Lekela platform at financial close. Commenting on Lekela, Lucy Heintz, a partner, and head of renewable energy at Actis, said: “With soaring demand and funding constraints, Africa’s need for renewable energy is pressing. “In South Africa, for example, currently 95 per cent of the country’s electricity is generated by coal-fired power stations. “While the region has significant natural and fossil fuel resources, a lack of long-term investment has led to a reliance on emergency and short-term diesel generation.” Actis – UK Website : www.act.is Mainstream Renewable Power – Ireland Website : www.mainstreamrp.com

GMP’s drums and reels
GMP Slovakia manufactures both large drums for cable and reels for wire drawing. For energy cable there are two models: SD-Structural Drum, which has an internal surface of the flanges in contact with the cable that is flat, and CD-Corrugated Drum, which has a corrugated surface. The choice of the model depends on the customer’s specifications, but both models can be supplied with the same characteristics and can be used for the same application. These models can be supplied as a knock-down drum to reduce transport costs. Assembly at the customer’s plant can be completed by the customer or by GMP Slovakia’s team. The company also supplies different equipment for the cable industry, suitable to handle drums of large dimensions. The range of products also includes standard and customised reels for drawing. Many models are available, including the DW-Double Wall and FM-Fully Machined. The first reel has double flange and is usually machined only on the barrel; the second model has a strong flange and is completely machined on all reel surfaces, inside and outside. Many dimensions and options are available, such as reinforced barrel and accumulating wire system on the flange. The company also manufactures many models of pallet and stands for stocking reels, made in welded steel structures and of different dimensions. All pallets and stands are designed by its technical team with a modern graphic system, in order to guarantee the best functionality. GMP Slovakia – Slovakia Website : www.gmp-slovakia.com

Assets change hands at wind farm
SUB-STATIONS and cabling connecting the Gwynt y Môr wind farm in Wales have been sold in a £350m deal. The owners (RWE Innogy UK, Stadtwerke München GmbH and Siemens) announced the completed sale of transmission assets to Gwynt y Môr OFTO PLC, a consortium formed by Balfour Beatty Investments Ltd and Equitix Ltd. In July 2013, following a competitive tender, Gwynt y Môr OFTO PLC was selected by Ofgem as the preferred bidder for the Gwynt y Môr offshore transmission licence. The Gwynt y Môr transmission assets consist of two 132/33kV offshore substations, four 132kV subsea and land export cables and a newly constructed 132/400kV onshore substation at St Asaph. RWE and its partners will now pay annual network charges to use the transmission facilities. RWE Innogy UK’s Gwynt y Môr project director, Toby Edmonds, said: “The sale of the Gwynt y Môr OFTO assets on favourable terms brings in £352 million which is very good news, and demonstrates the quality of the assets we have designed, constructed and commissioned at Gwynt y Môr.” Gwynt y Môr consists of 160 turbines with an installed capacity of 576MW. A spokesman said: “The annual revenue required by the PLC (which is the basis for the transmission network charges that Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm will pay for the next 20 years) will be proportionally the lowest amongst all previous OFTO transactions. IN the area of raw materials conveying, motan-colortronic China will present its new Metro G range of material loaders at the Import and Export Fair, Guangzhou, PR China in Hall 5.1 at stand D61 in June. The new Metro G material loader range
motan-colortronic China will exhibit the whole range of solutions for plastics processing applications. The focus will be on four major product areas: The first is drying with compressed-air dryers and dry-air dryers. The second is conveying systems: the new Metro G material loaders can be integrated in automatic central conveying systems, which will reduce costs and improve productivity and competitiveness. The third area is dosing and mixing systems such as the new Miniblend V which will also be launched at the exhibition. It is a

volumetric dosing and mixing unit for small-quantity dosing with high demands on dosing consistency. Last are control systems supervising material processing to ensure quality products. Developed by motan engineers, Metro G combines the latest technologies from colortronic and motan and enhances these systems with a number of new features. The Metro G is claimed to be one of the most comprehensive and flexible material loaders on the market. Its modular building block system allows users to create and configure the optimal material loader for their specific application. For example, a standard material loader unit can be expanded into a cleanroom version just by adding a special vacuum diaphragm valve. A dust removal module removes fine dust at the material loader, essential for some critical engineering plastics where absolutely no dust is allowed to enter the process. The system can also be fitted with modules with a tangential material inlet to provide a cyclone effect for processing those materials where separation of coarse dust is required. The volumetric Miniblend V dosing and mixing unit offers mixing quality and consistently accurate dosing. Mounted between the machine hopper and the feed throat of the plastics processing machine, the unit requires very little space. Disc dosing with the Miniblend V gives the user real volume dosing which guarantees a very high dosing accuracy – even for very small dosing quantities. Three different disc sizes as well as dosing modules made of materials such as stainless steel or glass, and special wear-resistant discs for hard and abrasive materials are available. Module exchange is quick and easy and thus allows fast colour changes. The Miniblend V is designed to dose free and normal-flowing materials and micro-batches. The unit can be operated by motan’s volumetric controls Volu MC or Volunet MC, which is equipped with an Ethernet interface. motan-colortronic China – China Website : www.motan-colortronic.com

WHEN looking for a cleaning system for wires and cables etc, you can often be faced with a dilemma. Which method, in general mechanical or wet-chemically, is suitable for the desired surface quality? Budget or available space is limited, and the range of manufacturers of in-line cleaning systems as well as the current market solutions is manageable. The appropriate method is difficult to determine at first glance. As a result there is often an attempt to construct and implement your own solutions only to find that the outcome is, despite intense input of time and material, inadequate. Basically, the definition of the cleaning target and the analysis of the surface texture should be at the beginning of the search. Only when these points are defined, the choice of the suitable method and, if necessary, a suitable cleaning agent, can be carried out. As mentioned, usually a subdivision in ‘mechanical cleaning’ and ‘chemical cleaning’ is made, whereby nearly all mechanical cleaning methods can be combined with the chemical cleaning. On ‘mechanical cleaning’ the contamination is removed by the mechanical frictional force of normally solid cleaning materials such as brushes, textiles and microfibres. To Wire cleaning – the dilemma
remove gross contamination from the wire surface the cleaning with brushes or textile materials is very effective. Since the surface characteristics of the wire are far from ideal due to, for example, fine cracks and defects, these methods quickly reach their limits. ‘Chemical cleaning’ means, in most cases, that a fluid exposure performs the cleaning. The performance of these methods is considerably improved by increasing the velocity of the liquid by means of high pressure, ultrasonic or steam relaxation. Cleaning processes with liquids, supported by ultrasonic, high pressure or steam, can substantially meet the challenging task of removing dirt even from the smallest surface defects. Finally, the effectiveness of the cleaning process depends on how targeted the cleaning power (force or impulse) can be applied to the contamination for a certain time. Since the choice of the appropriate cleaning method is determined by many other factors, a comprehensive analysis of all parameters should be undertaken. This is precisely the approach GEO-Reinigungstechnik GmbH has selected. For the last two decades GEO has explicitly dealt with the cleaning of continuous profiles such as wires, ribbons, strands and cables. The procedures can be tested under near-production conditions at GEO’s test laboratory and from the knowledge gained, suitable solutions can be selected and implemented. GEO-Reinigungstechnik GmbH – Germany Website : www.geo-reinigungstechnik.de ❍ Many factors should be considered when choosing the appropriate cleaning method
