Excitement building for wire 2022 The excitement is building for what has to be the most eagerly anticipated wire Düsseldorf. Everyone has been fighting with a pandemic that has brought change, both professional and personal, on a scale no one could have foreseen. There have been many false dawns. Exhibitions postponed, cancelled, an online world has come to the fore as companies and organisers try to bring a semblance of normality to the industry. And the prospect of returning to the Fairgrounds in Düsseldorf is now just a few short months away. Our coverage of wire 2022 starts in this issue of Wire & Cable ASIA with a listing of exhibitors highlighted on page 28. There are also a number of paragraphs throughout the magazine giving a taste of what to expect when the halls open from 9 to 13 May. The March issue – and that of sister publication EuroWire – will feature a more in-depth look at what exhibitors will be showing at the five-day event. Praise indeed to French industrial lubricant specialist Condat, which has received Platinum-level recognition on the EcoVadis corporate social responsibility platform. The result puts the company in the top one per cent of companies worldwide, rated by EcoVadis, and which includes responsibility in 21 criteria divided into four themes: environment, HR and human rights, business ethics and responsible purchasing. Turn to page 6 for the full story. Also in this issue, NDC Technologies is highlighted with its new AccuScan Pro Series, the latest solution in single-axis diameter measurement.

‘Greener’ options for welding rod Cold welding has benefits for manufac- turers seeking sustainable solutions for welding non-ferrous rod. The process is more straightforward, cleaner and more energy-efficient than electrical butt weld- ing, and creates a metallurgical bond without loss of electrical integrity. The EP500, for non-ferrous rod from 5 to 15mm, can be connected to either a central air supply or a dedicated com- pressor. A single-phase electrical supply (between 100 and 240 volts) is only required for the control system, which the operator uses to set the weld parameters. The machine is also low maintenance, safe and user friendly.

British cold welding equipment manu- facturer PWM is experiencing demand for its rod welding machines, with sales of its pneumatically powered EP500 rod welder having more than doubled during the last year.

For welding larger rod sizes – 15 to 30mm in diameter – PWM’s P1500 electro/ hydraulic cold welder is equally simple to operate. Powered by three hydraulic pumps, the P1500 only requires electrical power for the 11kW pump motor. The intuitive interface makes programming straightforward, and the machine incorporates a de-flashing mechanism. The smaller, hydraulically powered P1000 rod welder has a compact footprint of 1,100 x 1,245mm. Designed for welding rod from 6 to 16mm, it has quick-release dies and an easily adjustable die setting mechanism. PWM cold welding machines and dies are designed, built and tested in-house. Engineering with the rolling ring drive The low-maintenance, efficient and easily controllable rolling ring drive is an alternative to drives based on timing belts or threaded spindles. Running on a plain round shaft, it can be used in many applications and is less sensitive to dirt. permanent and precise reciprocating movement is required. “The non-positive drive translates the movement of a rotating plain shaft with constant speed and direction of rotation into a stroke movement of the rolling ring drive,” explained Wolfgang Weber, Uhing’s managing director.

In the international wire and cable industry, the Uhing ® rolling ring drive is used in laying a wide variety of materials on spools. Reliability, availability, flexibility, ease of operation and long service life make it of interest in custom designs. Uhing says that the rolling ring drive shows its strengths wherever a Mikrotek Machines Ltd Mikrotek has designed and launched a new wire-polishing machine for resizing and re-polishing super-fine size diamond dies. With the model WPF-1S, die/wire fixing and releasing are fast and easy. The machine is fitted with a ‘V-type’ self-centring and self-locking die holder, which helps work different case sizes. The top wire is fixed to a soft helical spring to blend and work on Maillefer is launching the latest version of its MED documentation software. The web-enabled MED 3.0 documentation utility makes finding assemblies and related instructions easy for users of Maillefer equipment. Each customer project is supplied with a specific set of technical descriptions and illustrations. Weighty paper binders have long been replaced with a more sustainable collection, compiled into the versatile Maillefer E-Documentation (MED), which provides ease of navigation, searching and connecting to related information. The application is web-enabled, screen responsive and multi-platform, making it suitable for handheld devices as well as desktop and laptop computers. Maillefer focused on having complete, accurate and user-friendly documentation avail- able in a convenient format. MED docu- ments are text searchable and contain cross references, bookmarks and other navigational aids. MED supports various user requirements, such as installation and maintenance servicing, equipment operation, training staff and on-call visits. Customers receive an introduction to MED when

Without positive-locking threads, users can freely select the pitch values and pitch direction, and flexibly set the desired speed up to 4.2m/s as well as the stroke length. An integrated reversing mechanism ensures automatic and dynamic stroke reversal when a pre-set fixed stop has been reached. The possible applications of the rolling ring drive with shaft diameters between 15 and 80mm are diverse: coating, inserting or handling in the automotive industry; cleaning, separating, spraying and distributing in the food industry; or opening and closing, positioning, indexing, chaining or winding in the packaging industry. Existing systems can be retrofitted with both analogue and automated rolling ring drives. The company Schöpstal uses Uhing rolling ring drives in its equipment for participating in Maillefer’s education programmes, allowing them to use the tool to its fullest. The package operates in two modes: Documentation mode covers all of the technical descriptions and drawings related to a project, and Spare Parts mode offers access to individual parts for easy identification. Users can move between modes using the specific information at hand (eg a part found in a drawing shown can be directly added to the spare parts request). The customer’s installation is represented hierarchically inMED. A tree structure pro- vides a synopsis of supply, with branches leading to individual components in the line. Each machine typically has four categories of documents associated with it: general information (instruction manuals), mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and original documentation for various integrated parts and com- ponents coming from OEMs (such as motors, gear boxes and drives). The Spare Parts mode shows the client all of the spare parts identified by Maillefer for each machine, with a distinction

retrieving drip irrigation hoses, as the system is easy to couple, flexible to use and insensitive to soil and dust. “Due to its shape, the plain shaft picks up much less dirt, is easier to seal, and can be cleaned with a simple scraper,” said Mr Weber. This makes the rolling ring drive suitable for use in damp environments or where there is a high load of particles. To meet increasing requirements in production and installation, Uhing offers customised automation solutions for rolling ring drives. These range from automatic spool flange detection to the generation of specific winding patterns and continuous adjustment of the motion sequence during operation. Process lines with remote monitoring

QED specialises in equipment for the in- line heat-treating, cleaning and coating of steel wire. Its furnaces are custombuilt for multi-strand annealing, stress relieving, patenting and tempering processes. With patented flow technology, the fluid systems integrate cleaning efficiency with high wire speeds. The company supplies new process lines with remote monitoring and control of the equipment’s key functions. Networked control panels are further enhanced with software and hardware for communicating directly with internal networks. The Siemens-based PLCs work in unison with an Ixon router for seamless LAN integration. The equipment package includes a cloud- based command centre offering solutions such as live production dashboards, real-time messaging alerts and access to equipment from anywhere in the world. Ixon Cloud 2 provides fast PLC access over a secure network, with real-time remote monitoring and control of production indicators using online dashboards. Operators can connect to the process line via computer or smartphone. Options include cloud data logging and alarm notifications to mobile devices. The remote access capability permits troubleshooting from anywhere in the world. Thesoftwarehas status screens that indicate all inputs and outputs, in order to simplify maintenance and operations. All temperatures and pressures are graphed for easy visualisation of the process trends. Alarms are logged along with the time and date of the incident. AutoCoat TM – an upgrade to existing high- speed zinc and Galfan process lines – uses independent measurement and fine- tune control to achieve consistent and uniform coating weight application with a precision of ±10g/m 2 . The measurement of galvanised coatings on steel wire is achieved via sensors that communicate with a Siemens PLC control panel in real time. The sensors relay current coat weight data that is instantly compared to a user-set target. The system then regulates a closed PID loop, controlling output pressure to individual nitrogen nozzles.

The com- pany outlined its plans in a “Low-Carbon Roadmap” – in line with the UK’s commit- ment to the Paris Agreement – which will see the business adopt a science-based target in order to validate its reductions. British Steel chairman Huiming Li, who is also CEO of parent company Jingye, said, “We firmly believe our products can play a central role in transitioning to a low-carbon, circular economy and we have ambitious plans to reduce the carbon intensity of our operations, with solutions that are globally recognised and accepted.” The company’s efforts to decarbonise the business are already underway, with projects being implemented to improve environmental performance. For example, the amount of scrap used in the integrated steelmaking route has been increased, with plans to further increase this by 2023, and the company is progressing the use of hot briquetted iron (HBI) and scrap in the iron making process. To help achieve its net-zero targets, British Steel will use a range of techniques and innovations, including assessing and adopting technology options such as carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, increasing scrap utilisation and electric arc furnace steelmaking. distances for the intermediate tests. It also allows quicker intervention in the process. Due to its compact design, multiple measuring devices can be placed at each production line within a factory. As with all VisioCablePro products, the AlphaOne is based on the most important international standards (eg IEC 60811, LV112, ICEA S-94-649-2013) and fulfils all requirements in combination with the new Velox cable measuring software. This software enables direct connection between measuring devices and a customer’s existing adapted CAQ software, or with VisioCablePro’s own CAQ software, ProCable 3. As well as a backlight for measuring one- layered samples (similar to a shadow- graph/profile projector), the AlphaOne has a white frontlight that can be used to measure a large number of simple, multi- layered samples.

short distances are some of the factors that define modern production. The optimisation of these variables presents manufacturers with a challenge. The new AlphaOne automatic wall thickness and cross-section measuring device from VisioCablePro ® is a complement to the company’s VCPX5 all-rounder. Compared to the larger VCPX5, AlphaOne is equipped with only one image field, depending on the outer diameter range. The idea behind this concept is simple: within a cable factory, various intermediate stages such as cores and jackets are produced on different extrusion lines, whereby the diameter range of the cables produced by an individual extrusion line remain relatively constant. For this reason, the AlphaOne is placed directly next to the individual lines and saves time-consuming walking

The AlphaOne is easy to operate

The in-house developed intelligent coloured frontlight – Lumimax ® – in combination with higher resolution monochrome cameras designed for complex multi-layer samples will remain a feature of the VCPX5 cable measuring device, as this all-rounder has a more versatile field of application and a larger diameter range (up to three measuring fields from 0 to 150mm). Operation of the AlphaOne is simple and intuitive. The lighting conditions are directly set via a hardware button on the device. With preset/default light and camera parameters and a fixed working distance from the sample, user influence is reduced to a minimum. Although the AlphaOne does not have the built-in touchscreen PC found on the VCPX5, it can be integrated into a company’s internal hardware landscape via a Windows PC provided by the customer, or can be configured with a separate all-in-one touchscreen PC. iiM AG www.iim-ag.com

SK-400-C colour detection system

Making colour detection easy In an automotive wire production line, just one or two granules of a different colour can cause the contamination of approximately 200m of insulation cable, because of the difficulty of manually detecting the colour variation at a speed of 1,800m/min. a PC-based evaluation unit with 360° camera surveillance. The immediate assurance of colour reliability eliminates colour complaints and faulty production. In addition, waste and scrap rates are reduced at start-up, during production and during colour changes. The system has undergone intensive testing on Rosendahl’s laboratory line

For this reason, Rosendahl has optimised a sensor system for colour detection. The SK-400-C can detect colour variations that the human eye cannot perceive. The system measures the main and stripe colours, as well as the stripe width, in accordance with previously set references. The main component is

and improved cleanliness over mineral oil-based products. Synthetic lubricants are highly stable fluids and are used in fine wire drawing processing applications where high levels of lubrication and cleanliness are required, to cope with the high speeds of modernmachinery. Proven to reduce wire break frequency by 50 per cent, synthetic lubricants deliver increased efficiency for wire drawing machinery. Factors such as poor temperature con- trol, unreliable filtration, a small system or highly pressurised pumps can shorten the product life of typical mineral oil-based lubricant. Soluble oil will naturally try to emulsify into the fluid. Chris Nettleship, technical director at Metalube, explained why synthetic lubricants are more stable: “Mineral oils are prone to changes in particle size, which can lead to instability as the lubricant interacts with ions in reactive copper and hard water salts. “The result for the manufacturer is an upset in the overall balance of the fluid, leading to poor detergency, Cimteq CEO Mike Braddock com- mented, “With the introduction of CableBuilder Go we are now able to assist manufacturers of all sizes within the wire and cable manufacturing industry. Our expertise in providing specialist manufacturing software has positioned us as market leaders, so we are confident that CableBuilder Go will be a sound investment for any single-factory manufacturers looking to grow.” Chris Huntly, CableBuilder product own- er, said, “The many benefits this software brings will give customers improved control over their design and quotation process by accurately calculating mate- rial quantities and production costs. This is used to generate quotations to cus- tomers as well as bills of materials and machine routings for production. For most clients, CableBuilder Go requires a maximum of two weeks’ implementation

Metalube is utilising scientific advance- ments in synthetic technology to deliver lubrication solutions to the wire drawing industry. With the advancement of wire machinery, and the expansion of production capability, Metalube has formulated an advanced range of synthetic lubricants developed to address the high- performance objectives of multi-wire machines. Already approved and in use, Metalube’s synthetic Lubricool and Metarol products are claimed to deliver better performance, increased stability
