A new evolution of HFI welder EMMEDI, the HFI welding specialist of the Ajax Tocco Magnethermic family of companies, has unveiled a new high frequency, solid-state induction welder. The Emmedi MosWeld SiC design differs from traditional HFI welders by its use of high current capable silicon carbide (SiC) transistors. For an example, in a traditional HFI welder using Si Mosfet transistor technology, 64 transistors are required for each 100 kW. The SiC Mosfet transistor requires only four transistors for the same 100 kW output. For the 500 kW unit there are 20 transistors; for the same power, a traditional Si transistor welder would require approximately 320 transistors. The MosWeld SiC design currently ranges up to 1,200 kW, with a single modular cabinet design up to 800 kW. MosWeld SiC system efficiency is claimed to be around 90 per cent, compared to traditional HFI welders, Mosfet or IGBT, that operate at around 85 per cent efficiency. In higher power models, a 12-pulse reaction rectifier can be employed to reduce line harmonics. It improves the current harmonic distortion by a factor of two, avoiding disturbances to other electrical devices connected to the same transmission line. Harmonic filtering is normally suitable for higher power welders for which a dedicated main transformer is used to connect to a medium voltage (MV) or high voltage (HV) primary supply. The system is short-circuit protected by galvanic insulation through a transformer installed between the inverter and oscillator. The MosWeld SiC utilises a sliding rack system for inverter modules and the main control boards. This system allows primary components to slide out of the power supply for easier troubleshooting or replacement. The Mosweld SiC control package employs a Siemens PLC control platform. MosWeld SiC controls offer part recipes, parameter recall, 30 per cent coil auto-tuning and intrinsic load matching adaption capability that is adjusted electronically within the control circuitry.
