sold in order to guarantee customers a complete and reliable experience. The implementation of a full technical department followed this, which was allowed to develop new machinery and to adapt and improve second-hand lines in order to offer a higher quality product at a competitive price. The results achieved by the company during recent years confirm that the choice, made just a few years ago, to focus its activity on engineering and manufacturing of brand-new equipment, instead of overhauling and servicing second-hand lines, was a successful and important step. With expert know-how and a clear orientation towards the international market, Adda Fer Meccanica has supplied several production plants around the world, increasing the popularity of the brand, which is now synonymous with quality and reliability.

I NDUS T RY Mair Research supplies finishing line for a high productivity tube mill in US

MAIR Research has supplied an integrated finishing line for processing tubes to an important US supplier of tubes used in a wide range of applications such as A53, API, conduit and sprinkler pipe. The distinguishing factor for this finishing line is the high level of productivity it is expected to guarantee as it must follow a continuous weld (CW) mill capable of producing at speeds up to 1,000ft per minute (approximately 300m/min per minute). The products being processed are up to 4 7 / 8 " diameter with max 0.375" wall thickness and 25ft lengths. They arrive at 105°F. The line has replaced the previous system based on single processing zones; the integration of the full process placed in line with the mill has allowed it to reach a 95 per cent working progress reduction and a significant increase in output. The layout has been custom designed together with the customer according to the specific processing required as per the destinations of use for the tubes. This is also in accordance with the available floorspace. Since all operations are performed automatically, a very limited amount of operators, with sole supervisory tasks, are sufficient to conduct the line. Consequently all operator hazards have been eliminated, providing a consistently safe work environment.

The US finishing line supplied by Mair Research

The main processing equip- ment present in the line is as follows: • Chamfering machine. Mair Research employs a special double head chamfering machine to process two tubes at a time (facing, ID and OD bevel plus adaptor for specific angle bevel). The machine is equipped with a quick spindle replacement allowing it to reduce the downtimes during size changeover.

• Swarf removal station. This is used to flush out loose chips and scale from two tubes at a time in two stages by means of compressed air. All expelled particles are conveniently collected inside a bin. • Packaging machine. The tubes are automatically packed into hexagonal or square/rectangular bundles and then strapped. Special provisions allow a staggered layer bundle to form when stacking threaded tubes equipped with a socket on one end. Bundles are then weighed and placed ready on the storage chains to be picked up by an overhead crane. A

Upon changing tube length the mobile part of the equipment (conveyors and mobile head) will relocate automatically to the new position. • Hydrotester, rotary type. A special high productivity hydrotester allows the machine to test up to 1,200 tubes per hour at 3,000psi. The operation is continuous and the tubes perform a rotary movement in which the work cycles take place. Before the actual pressurisation, all tubes undergo an ID flush-out operation to clear any scale or chips.

SMS group receives follow-up order from Mahshahr Pipe Mill Company

eliminated successively. This entails not only identifying the necessary spare parts but also optimising production sequences. In order to achieve its ambitious future goals, Mahshahr Pipe Mill Company is also investing in the know-how of its employees. SMS group will provide numerous on-site training courses. In addition to this, SMS group’s technical service team will be assisting MPM with the deployment of an effective maintenance organisation, aimed at improving preventive maintenance measures to improve the availability of the plant and the quality of the finished products in the long run. To this end, SMS group is supplying IMMS ® , an integrated maintenance management system. IMMS is a combination of tried and tested software and valuable information, building on decades of maintenance experience. In order to create a reliable basis for an effective maintenance organisation, the entire MPM plant will be mapped and all technological parameters integrated. Each component subject to maintenance will be clearly marked and coded (plant tree) in order to ensure cost-effective management of the large- diameter pipe mill. “Once all the measures stipulated in the contract have been implemented we will be in a position to guarantee the same level of plant performance as in the case of a newly built plant. With its willingness to invest MPM is making a significant contribution to the further development of the country. With our service and modernisation concept we are doing our bit to enable MPM to profitably produce and supply pipes and tubes of premium quality,” said Oleg Vilents, maintenance consultant at SMS group. Mahshahr Pipe Mill Company, a subsidiary of Sadid Industrial Group, is a manufacturer of pipes primarily intended for use in gas pipelines, with diameters ranging between 24" and 56" and wall thicknesses of up to 35mm. MPM is an established player not only in the domestic market, but also in the Middle East and internationally.

MAHSHAHR Pipe Mill Company (MPM) has signed a comprehensive service and modernisation contract with SMS group for its large-diameter pipe mill in the Khuzestan Province, Iran. With this contract MPM and SMS group will continue their successful cooperation. In 2016 an interdisciplinary team of specialists from SMS group and MPM conducted an audit to inspect the current maintenance status of the large- diameter pipe mill located in Mahshahr. Overall, the assessment included areas such as production, maintenance, management, administration and compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. A comprehensive service and modernisation contract has now been agreed based on the list of recommendations compiled by SMS group following the audit. “The modernisation and maintenance concept devised by SMS group will not only provide us with premium technology, but also with sustainable growth. This is a significant future- oriented step that will enable us to safeguard our competitiveness and increase our production performance,” said Ehsan Shahrokhi, purchasing and procurement manager of MPM. The service andmodernisation concept developed by SMS group is tailored to MPM’s specific plant parameters and requirements and includes, for example, the overhaul of the complete pipe welding equipment. Digital Perfect arc ®

welding power sources are to be used for the welding units. These work with insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) power electronics and regulate the welding current by fully digital means. As a result, the level of efficiency attained by the welding units is over 90 per cent. Depending on the working point, energy savings of up to 30 per cent can be achieved. Productivity can also be increased by up to 20 per cent. As well as the welding equipment, both X-ray testing units are to be replaced, to ensure maximum pipe quality while boosting the output capacity of the overall plant. The entire hydraulic control system is also going to be replaced. The ageing MX4 hydraulic control system is being replaced with a latest-generation Indra Motion MLC L75 control system. The plant will also be equipped with the new Shape automation system, which controls the forming process based on a continuous calculation of the optimum forming parameters. This minimises any potential negative influences from the starting material and will support the operator. The Shape technology developed by SMS group provides customers a competitive edge in terms of quality compared to conventional systems. As part of the technical assistance agreement, the entire large-diameter pipe mill in Khuzestan will be examined for faults and disruptions, which will be

Atomat celebrates 50 years of welded tube engineering

rolls surpassing a certain production speed can be wiped out with carbide tools. High quality carbides are essential in achieving such goals. For this reason Atomat counts on material sintered in Italy by a sister company within the group. Carbides are produced from selected virgin powders by means of advanced sintering technology. Atomat production is committed to guaranteeing quality levels. The same approach is now leading it to enlarge the production range of steel tooling to up to 24" OD tubes. New equipment has been recently commissioned, and allows Atomat the possibility to machine rolls up to 1,600mm OD. Reliable and competent partners have been selected to outsource raw material and heat treatment, putting Atomat in the position to share and combine its expertise and matching the expectations of demanding customers.

use of rolls in sintered materials for welded tube manufacturing. New technologies in processing the tubes and the introduction of dual phase steels set new basic standards. In this scenario the top tier companies have had the opportunity to examine their core competencies. Prime raw materials along with decades of designing experience give an advantage to Atomat SpA, which has the opportunity to supply these increasingly popular products. The introduction of carbide rolls of the appropriate design allows users to easily process difficult steels (pickled with reduced grip, for example), reduc- ing possible problems related to material pick up. Beside the benefits of the increase in the working life of the carbide rolls, the main feedback from customers underlines the increase of tube mill uptime. Time spent maintaining and adjusting the rolls is reduced, while the steady and reliable set up of the tube mill allows an increase in the production output. Surface defects noted with steel

THIS year Atomat SpA will celebrate its 50 th anniversary. The company has been committed to the production and manufacture of wire and welded tube tooling since it first began and is a leading company in this area of the steel industry. Commitment, research, cutting- edge production systems and expert personnel allow Atomat to stand out, becoming a benchmark for quality in the international tube and wire industries, it said. For the last 50 years Atomat has worked in this highly selective and continuously evolving market and is now setting new goals for the future. With regard to the welded tube industry, Atomat is one of the first companies to have successfully introduced – among several of its existing customers – carbide rolls. This sintered material combines wear- resistant properties (higher than rolls in steel), with the possibility of achieving a homogeneous and defect-free surface for the tubes. The evolution in the automotive industry has endorsed the increasing

FrontRow acquires ClearWell Oilfield Solutions FRONTROW Energy Technology

scale challenge alone currently costs the industry billions of dollars each year, because of scale prevention, scale remediation and deferred production. “The installation of ClearWell’s units can reduce or, in many cases, remove the need for alternative treatment methods, which results in major cost and time savings for operators. With the global market for oilfield scale inhibitor set to reach $700mn by 2020, we see tremendous potential for ClearWell and are excited to support its ambitious growth plans.” ClearWell, which will relocate its head office inSouthampton, UK, toFrontRow’s technology centre in Aberdeen, plans to grow its existing number of units in the field by around 400 per cent over the next five years. Martin Clark, CEO at MSL Oilfield Services, said, “This acquisition marks a very positive step forward for ClearWell, and we are excited to embark upon this relationship with FrontRow. We currently have units in operation across the world,

Group has announced the acquisition of ClearWell Oilfield Solutions, an oil and gas technology company focused on flow assurance and production optimisation. FrontRow has acquired 50 per cent of ClearWell from the previous owner, MSL Oilfield Services, which retains the remaining 50 per cent. ClearWell provides a non-intrusive, chemical-free scale control system, using a surface-mounted device to induce pulsed, high frequency signals into the piping system. These signals cause micro-crystals of scale to form and remain suspended in the produced fluid flowing through the pipework, rather than adhering to the internal pipe wall and restricting the flow of oil and gas. FrontRow chief executive Stuart Ferguson said, “Increasing water production from maturing oilfield basins tends to bring with it many problems, including corrosion damage and scale build-up, which can substantially reduce the economic life of fields.
