Interview – Dmitry Goroshkov Severstal’s director, sales and business development, energy sector

Russia is also our primary market, and in 2019 we held a 17.4 per cent share of the large-diameter pipe (LDP) market, equivalent to 338.5 thousand tonnes. Since 2019, I have been leading Severstal’s campaign to develop sales in European markets, where we see huge potential to expand. What makes the European pipe market attractive to Severstal? We see a lot of opportunities on the European pipe market. The European market is a region with exciting current and future prospects for pipeline construction and liquified natural gas; while the EU has progressive climate change policies, natural gas is currently viewed by the EU as an important ‘bridging fuel’ in the energy transition. It is displacing coal’s role in baseload electricity generation and is also a key fuel for meeting spikes in demand, therefore there will be significant demand for the fuel and its infrastructure for many years to come.

“While we are already a major pipe supplier to our domestic market in Russia, it is our ambition to become one of the leading suppliers in Europe in the coming years. We are already seeing progress and we hope to benefit from increasing activity in the natural gas market. I am really excited to be part of this journey.”

Can you tell us about your role at Severstal?

I am director of sales and business development for the energy sector at Severstal, a fully vertically integrated steel producer focused primarily on meeting the needs of customers in three target segments: construction, machinery and energy. We are a leading manufacturer of large diameter longitudinal seam (LSAW) pipe in Russia, with a production capacity of about 600 thousand tonnes per year.
