engineering companies in the US leaped five years forward in business digital adoption in a matter of just a few weeks. Nearly half of manufacturing companies in the UK switched to digital working practices within just two weeks during the pandemic according to reports. A remarkable transformation and credit to the adaptability of engineers and manufacturers in the face of a crisis. Virtually over night the ability to remotely monitor and control equipment has also become essential, something many tube machinery companies were already ahead of the curve on. Hopefully these technological investments – albeit made in an emergency – will help to make companies even more resilient and efficient as the world gradually recovers. The editorial deadline for the March issue is 11 January. It will have three main features: tube mills & rollforming lines; inspection, testing & quality control; and advances in measuring & marking. On the cover . . . The roots of EFD Induction go back to the launch in 1950 of a universal induction hardening machine by the German company Induktionserwärmung Fritz Düsseldorf GmbH (FDF). While FDF was expanding in the 1970s, an induction revolution was taking place in Norway, where engineers had figured

out how to transistorise frequency converters for induction heating.

In 1981 three of those engineers founded ELVA Induksjon AS. In 1983 they unveiled the Minac range of mobile converters. Workpieces no longer had to be brought at great cost to a stationary induction heater – the heater could now go to the piece. In 1991 the managing directors of FDF and ELVA met by chance. They talked and speculated. FDF was strong in stationary induction hardening machines. ELVA was the agile innovator with a track record in finding new applications for induction heating. What if the two companies got together? In January 1996 FDF and ELVA merged to create EFD Induction. And the rest is, as they say, history.

Tube China 2020: successful trade fair held following rapid industry recovery in China

TUBE China was recently held at Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) and has shown that the trade fair business in China is picking

up speed again after the Covid-19 pandemic. The trade fairs took place safely and at a distance, in compliance with all applicable hygiene regulations.

At Tube China 221 companies presented their innovations from the fields of tubes, pipes, tube processing and machining and the trade in tubes on a total area of 18,000m 2 . A total of 725 exhibitors, including 640 Chinese companies, came to wire China and presented their innovations from the wire and cable industry in a total area of 54,000m 2 . Two national pavilions from Germany and France complemented the trade fair events. For the first time, Tube China was supplemented by THERMPROCESS China and Saw EXPO China. In special themed pavilions companies from the fields of thermal process technology, sawing and alternative cutting tech- nologies presented their innovations. More than 36,000 visitors came to the four trade fairs in Shanghai during the four days of the event.

The event was a success despite the disruption caused by Covid-19

D/F Machine Specialties celebrates its 50 th anniversary

D/F Machine has been in operation for 50 years

D/F MACHINE Specialties has cele- brated its golden anniversary and founding day. To celebrate its 50 th anniversary, D/F Machine Specialties has release its NEW NCC P-38 Curved Water-Cooled MIG hand-held gun for welding aluminium. It was asked to make this gun by a customer that welds aluminium and steel because there is a huge void in the market for a heavy duty curves water-cooled hand-held gun for push welding aluminium. The other curved welding guns available cannot currently handle the heat involved with aluminium welding. “We developed this new gun to not only withstand the demand and heat, but to be stronger, lighter, have more options, and use D/F’s readily available consumables that last up to 7 to 1 due to the heavy duty torch design and superior water-cooling.

“Like all of our other guns, the NCC-P38 is intended for use with all manufacturer’s wire feeders, which have provision for water cooling. It accommodates a slip-in tip fastened by a collet action nut. A unique feature of the Water-Cooled Curved Gun is that the nozzle assembly water chamber and inner body water chamber are serially connected to each other with sliding removable connectors making it a relatively simple matter to detach the nozzle assembly, thus completely eliminating the need for gaskets in the water passage system.” The 50-degree, curved metallic water- cooled front body allows for operation in tight, hard-to-reach areas. The torch has a copper gas nozzle, which threads into the copper front end of the torch for better heat dissipation. All utilities are connected internally to the torchbody andexit fromthe rear of the

torch body housing. The company also offers an optional cable/hose sheath for better cable management. The torch is provided with a button switch, which can be positioned at any point on the torch handle. For feeding all wires, a replaceable liner conduit system is available for feeding 0.35, 0.045, 0.047, 0.052, and 1 / 16 " hard/cored wires through a continuous metal liner run to the tip in the gun with no gaps. For aluminium welding of 3 / 64 , 1 / 16 and 3 / 32 " wires run through a continuous Nylatron liner run to the tip in the gun with no gaps. D/F Machine Specialties www.dfmachinespecialties.com

MACH Exhibition to be rescheduled to April 2022 THE Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA), which owns and runs the MACH exhibition, the UK’s largest manufacturing trade event on behalf of the industry, has taken the decision to reschedule MACH from January 2021 to April 2022. With the continued uncertainty around the Covid-19 pandemic and local lockdowns, the MTA decided to consult with its members and exhibitors who had booked a stand at MACH 2021 and gauge their opinion on whether to continue with MACH 2021 in January or carry forward to MACH 2022. The overwhelming sentiment was that in order to minimise the risks to visitors and exhibitors and to provide the best possible platform for both, the event should be moved to April 2022. The event will be held in the same Halls at the NEC from 4 to 8 April 2022. James Selka, MTA CEO, said: “We believe that this decision, which has not been taken lightly, is in the best interests of the industry and those who work in it. Our first priority is, of course, the health and safety of the 30,000 or more people who will visit and work at MACH. “In addition, we believe that by moving MACH toApril 2022, we will be able to offer a better experience for our visitors, and better value for our exhibitors, rather than holding it in January 2021 with the uncertainty that could still be with us. Add to this the government’s recent announcement of a pause to the restart of live events, and it was felt that a dateline in April 2022 was a much better option.” “In the meantime, visitors who planned to attend MACH 2021 to find out about new technology, look for new suppliers and research new trends will be able to utilise the existing MTA digital platforms. In addition, later this year, we will launch a new, virtual platform, which we believe will perfectly complement the live show in 2022.” Mr Selka concluded: “We’re grateful to the NEC for working with us to facilitate this move and we look forward to welcoming visitors to MACH 2022 where they will be able to experience the best of modern manufacturing technology under one roof.”

Danieli Breda 35-MN extrusion press commissioned for Showa Denko in Spain

A NEW Danieli Breda 35-MN graphite extrusion press ordered by Showa Denko has passed factory performance tests at Danieli workshops in Italy, and shipped to La Coruña, Spain, where it was installed and commissioned at the end of 2020. The project incorporates several innovative Danieli Breda core

design elements making the new Showa Denko extrusion press, and its auxiliary devices, the most advanced in the graphite electrode industry, in terms of safety, quality, consistency and efficiency. The extrusion unit is equipped with a vacuum system able to reach an

extremely high level of vacuum in a few seconds, resulting in the highest quality for the extruded material. Another important feature improving the product quality is the diathermic oil-heating system, keeping a constant control of the die temperature before and during extrusion. The extruded material is automatically cut-to-length and checked for size and temperature. Furthermorean innovativeengineering concept has been implemented for fully automatic die storage and quick die- change by means of a robotic gantry crane. The new 35-MN extrusion press will produce top quality electrodes used in electric arc furnaces, in diameters up to 850mm and lengths up to 3500mm at a production rate of 15 tons per hour. Israeli pipe manufacturer invests in new generation high-performance extruder

A RECENTLY commissioned solEX NG 75-40 from Battenfeld-Cincinnati GmbH has been commissioned. An advantages of the new extruder is the low melt temperature with high output, explained Fuad Dweik, managing partner of Palad HY Industries Ltd. Mr Dweik is a long-standing customer of the German machine manufacturer and was the first pipe manufacturer in Israel to opt for the single screw extruder of the latest generation. “In view of our positive experience with the machine technology from Germany, we have again chosen an extruder from Battenfeld-Cincinnati for our most recent investment”, Rami Dweik, son of the proprietor and responsible for production at the factory, added. Palad HY has replaced an old extruder in a PE 100 pipe extrusion line. “We are particularly impressed with the lower melt temperature compared to the previously used extruder, combined with better melt homogeneity and consequently better pipe quality,” Mr Dweik added. Thanks to the lower melt temperature, Palad also achieves significantly more even wall thickness distributions within extremely narrow tolerances, plus less undesirable sagging. The better pipe quality also reduces material consumption and produces less scrap.

to its domestic market, Palad HY also serves customers in Eastern and Western Europe, South America and Africa, to which about 25 per cent of its annual production volume of currently about 20,000 tons is exported. The company’s product range includes fresh water and sewage pipes as well as pipes for natural gas distribution systems, and protective conduits for electricity and communication lines. The redesigned unit is responsible for the above-mentioned advantages of the new solEX NG extruders, which are available with screw diameters of 60, 75, 90 and 120mm and cover a throughput range from 750 to 2,500kg/h, compared to the well-established and still available predecessor series. The internally grooved barrel in combination with a matching screw and grooved bushing geometry offers substantial improvements in process technology: a reduced axial pressure profile lessens machine wear, high specific output rates with lower screw speeds ensure high efficiency, and the gentle melting performance at about 10°C lower temperatures compared to conventional processing units. Palad HY Industries www.paladhy.com

“Both the material savings and the roughly 10 per cent reduction in energy consumption due to the lower heating rates make this extruder a particularly cost-efficient alternative,” concluded Mr Dweik, who is already considering a further investment in another solEX NG extruder of the new generation for other existing lines. Palad HY, which was founded in 1997, ranks among the leading manufacturers of HDPE and PVC pipes in Israel. The ISO 9001:2008-certified pipe producer is well known for its range of large-diameter pipes with maximum diameters of 1,200mm for HDPE pipes and 500mm for PVC pipes. Nakata signs contract with leading steel tube producer for advanced 24" pipe ODF mill

NAKATA Mfg Co has announced that a contract for one of its most advanced orbital die forming mills, with a 24" size capacity for producing stainless steel pipe, has been signed. The contract is with a major global stainless pipe supplier and was finalised in October 2020. The customer already possesses three Nakata-developed mill lines for 24", 8" and 2" size tubes known by the

name ‘FFX’. FFX is Nakata’s popular and long available advanced mill. No roll change is required at the BD~CL section when forming different pipe ODs, which is also the case with the new ODF mill equipment. The customer wanted to diversify its production range so it decided to install a new mill line for 24" size using ODF, as this equipment can produce pipes with ultra-light wall-thickness stably, even with t/D ratio less than 1 per cent. It has a current plan to go around 0.6 per cent

during a special project it is working on. This is a remarkable achievement which is possible due to the rotational die feature in the ODF mill, which keeps hold of the strip edge during the forming process, helping to generate almost ‘zero’ forming strain at the edge as a result. This feature is essential for such ultra-light WT pipe production. Nakata Mfg Co
