MAXIMUM SUPPORTING FORCE TESTS PER HOUR WEEKS REVAMPING PERIOD

Hydrotesters for longitudinally welded large- diameter pipes guarantee compliance with the relevant requirements of international certification bodies. SMS Meer has erected a new hydrostatic pipe tester for Berg Steel Pipe Corporation (BSPC) at its site in Panama City, Florida (USA). It was installed as a re- placement investment for an old machine. As no modifications were necessary to the foundations, it was possible to limit the re- vamping time to just five weeks. The plant itself is also quick: With a standard pipe length of 12.4 m, it can reach a testing capacity of 25 pipes per hour.

Quality unites – a fact that our customers and we discover time and again with every new project. Together we develop solutions that give our partners the com- petitive edge in their business. Thanks to this good cooperation, SMS Meer is a leading international company in heavy machinery and plant engineering.

This is not a pipe.

It’s actually an entry ticket to huge markets. Be- cause what you’re looking at is a longitudinally weld- ed pipe that’s been normalized to oil and gas pipe standards. But there’s a catch. Normalizing isn’t easy. Especially for today’s gauges and alloys. It de- mands expertise in metallurgy, control software and precise heat delivery. The good news however is that these are areas in which we specialize—making us a leader in pipe weld-seam normalizing. Also, with more than 50 years’ induction heating experience, we’re experts at using technology to open new commercial opportu- nities for our customers.

EFD Induction is Europe’s no 1—and the world’s no. 2—induction company. Our systems are used to weld, normalize, anneal, harden, temper, braze, melt, forge, bond, cure and pre- and post-heat. So whatever your pipe normalizing needs, you can turn to us for a solution. And since we’re present around the world, that solution is probably closer than you think. Contact us today. There’s a vast oil and gas pipe market out there. We’ll help you get a share of it. Learn more about our pipe welding and normalizing solutions at F abtech 2014, Booth # C150.

Fibre laser welded tube mill for USA YODER Manufacturing of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, has supplied a QVW-150 fibre laser welded tube mill for producing decorative stainless components up to 38mm (1½") diameter. accurately located and welded into the customer’s fabricating assembly. user to have one system instead of two TIG welding tube mills. It is claimed that the efficiency of this solution has enough available production capacity that the customer will be able to delay the need for additional tube making equipment by several years.

By de-coupling the finishing system after the cut-off, and utilising centreless brush technology, instead of an inline solution, the customer will be able to easily vary their type of polished or brushed finish, for the various products that they supply to different end markets. This can be done with the tube mill still in operation, and accumulating in process tubes, effectively maintaining continuous throughput of the overall system. This method of finishing, combined with the laser welding system, will enable the

The complete system consists of an entry end, forming machine, fibre laser welder with twin-spot welding head, sizing machine with integrated double cut shear system, brush de-burring system and a triple head centreless finishing system, all fully integrated for ease of operation. The mill also includes an ID marking system, so the tubing coming off the mill will be complete, ready to be

Yoder has provided similar systems, in recent years, for the chemical, oil and gas, and automotive markets, which require the integration of non-destructive testing and/or annealing equipment, depending on the specific application. For this latest tube mill, Yoder developed its new fibre-based fusion welding system with twin-spot welding optics. With these latest developments, laser welding is becoming more robust for the tube mill environment and less costly to operate when compared to CO 2 counterparts, as well as TIG/plasma welding. With the new fibre laser welding system there is no theoretical limit to tube diameter, and with this system the wall thickness capability has been practically expanded to 9.5mm (0.375"). Yoder designs and builds equipment, tooling and systems for metal forming, tube and pipe and heavy industrial material handling applications. The company can provide both engineered- to-order and off-the-shelf manufacturing solutions that increase production capacity and efficiency through integrated, streamlined processes, automation and faster machines.

major order for an almost identical mill. Tuberías Procarsa will use the offline spiral pipe machine from Schuler to produce large pipes with diameters from 508 to 2,235mm (20 to 88") and lengths from 12 to 24.4m. It will mainly be used for building pipelines in oil and gas extraction. The input stock for the large pipes is a coil-wound strip up to 25.4mm (1") thick comprising high- grade steel (up to X100); the spiral pipe machine forms this material into the required pipe diameter and connects the edges by tack welding. Following that, welding of the pipe is completed on a separate welding stand using the submerged-arc method. The pipe mill has a length of more than 450m and also includes various facilities for testing the large pipes according to API standards. Ultrasound, X-rays and pressurised water are used for this process. The mill from Schuler will increase Tuberías Procarsa’s production capacities by 220,000 tons per year.

Scan Systems celebrates 30 years SCAN Systems is celebrating 30 years of servicing the OCTG industry, with its most recent innovation, ESP (enhanced signal processing). The company released the program commercially last year after spending six years in research and development. The software, along with electronic upgrade advancements including sophisticated algorithms and newly designed sensors, has advanced EMI technology.

“We are passionate about research and development and have a long- standing tradition of asking how do we make things better, more efficiently and just how far can we push the envelope?” said Matt Rutledge, vice president and general manager at Scan Systems. Scan Systems designed and manufactured the first portable EDM unit (electric discharge machine) specifically designed to introduce artificial flaws in metal products. In the late 1980s, the company started commercially offering the EDM Notch Master unit. At the same time, another team within the company was working on two products for pipe service operations. The results of their efforts are the Tally- Rite measuring systems, automated pipe tally equipment that reduces direct labour and human errors. Plasma surface treatment applications presented

The application of plasma surface treatment is explored in various situations like finished material cleaning, degreasing and surface preparation for coating. The workings of the plasma cleaner and its components are explained and compared to the traditional surface cleaning techniques.

Rogelj, commercial director of Plasmait GmbH, the Austrian supplier of plasma heat and surface treatment machinery. The technical paper titled ‘Continuous Plasma Cleaning and Surface Activation of Welded and Seamless Tubes’ was selected for presentation at the Pipe and Tube conference in Houston, USA, in September 2014. The paper outlines the plasma cleaning and surface activation process for small and medium diameter tubing.

SURFACE cleaning and degreasing is an important part of the tube production process. Traditionally this involves wet, chemical processes that are potentially harmful to the operator and the environment. One way to turn production chemical-free is to use plasma surface cleaning, which is a dry surface treatment. The subject of plasma surface treatment has been summarised in a technical article prepared by Igor

How would you assess the development of the hose and tube industry in China in regards to product quality control during production? The gross domestic product in China has been growing for more than 20 years now, although, in comparison to the previous year, growth was a little less in the first quarter of 2014, with an increase of 7.4 per cent. Simultaneously to this growth, the demands of the end users, in regards to the quality of the products which are being produced, are growing too. For this reason, hose and tubes manufacturers have to improve the product quality, to stay competitive in the market. Another issue is the

What is your impression of CHINAPLAS 2014, and could you give us your conclusion for the show? I am very satisfied about the outcome of the exhibition. Besides many existing customers, we welcomed interested visitors and prospective customers at our exhibition booth. We had plenty of intensive professional discussions about our technologies, as well as developments and trends for the hose, tube and plastics industry. Overall, CHINAPLAS was very successful for Sikora. In comparison to last year, we could note an increase in visitor numbers of 41 per cent, especially due to our new product, the Purity Scanner. In your opinion, which segments within the hose and tube industry in China offer the greatest potential in the future? In 2013, the percentage of aluminium multi-layer pipes produced in Asia grew to 55 per cent, in comparison to 48 per cent in 2010. I think that there will be continuously high demand for multi- layer pipes in the future, especially for building installations.

Bewo moves to a new location BEWO Cutting Systems BV moved offices in October 2014. After being located in Tilburg for almost 80 years, the Dutch developer and manufacturer of manually operated circular saws (the Bewo CPO) and high performance automatic cutting machines for tubes will be moving to a new and more spacious location in Waalwijk. Bewo cutting line usually consists of an automatic cutting machine, a de-burring machine, a length control system, a cleaning machine and a stacking robot with discharge unit. In Waalwijk a showroom and education centre will be established where Bewo will present its intelligent cutting solutions and where agents and operators will be educated in the world of automated cutting.

years. Since the 1950s it took in the production of cutting systems. It further developed the cutting systems and one after another innovative developments followed. In the beginning of the 1960s Bewo became the producer of complete automatic cutting machines, consisting of cutting, de-burring, measuring, length control, cleaning and stacking of tubes. Nowadays it still produces the complete automatic cutting machines and the renowned manually operated circular saws: the Bewo CPO-315. Both the complete solutions for cutting lines and the Bewo CPO-315 go to customers all over the world. Frans van Gorp ends by saying: “With the new location in Waalwijk we have found a good place for making our ambitions come true. We are ready for an innovative future!”

With this move Bewo anticipates the growing demand for automated solutions for tube cutting from its market. The premises are located next to highway A59 and therefore better accessible. It also has modern facilities, including a training area. It is the right place for further growth and making ambitions come true. With the recovering economy Bewo sees a rise in demand for the further automation of production processes. The new premises in Waalwijk facilitates the increase in demand. Bewo’s automatic cutting lines are becoming more extensive and ask for more production surface. A complete

All activities during the move will continue not just in the office, but also in the factory. Operations manager Frans van Gorp explains: “Our customers will not be bothered by our move. While we are working in Tilburg we start building a next cutting line in Waalwijk too. For the simultaneous building of multiple cutting lines a strict organisation is required, so we have arranged everything down to the last detail.” Bewo has made a lot of history in Tilburg. The company was founded in 1936 as an engineering office and located in Tilburg for almost 80

Blast sheets and profiles AGTOS presented new innovations from the shot-blast-turbine blasting technology field at the EuroBLECH trade show in October in Hanover. Themanufacturer offersnewmachines manufactured in-house, and trades used shot-blasting systems that can be delivered in a technically fully functional

state and customised to customer requirements. A comprehensive service programme rounds out the range of services. An RT-15 runway shot-blasting system for sheets and profiles was shown as an exhibition at the trade show stand. It is an example of an entire series of sizes and designs. Interested visitors were shown the advantages of the tried-and-tested AGTOS blasting machines. High performance, economic working method and good access in case of maintenance are the most valuable benefits. In addition, there is other news for the branch: recently, AGTOS commissioned its first conservation line at a customer’s location. It can prime sheets and profiles after the blasting process which are thus protected against the impacts of weather.

Roll forming equipment maker orders two ‘Weldac’ solid-state induction welders

EFD Induction, one of the world’s largest induction heating companies, recently received an order for two of its ‘Weldac’ induction welders from a major North American roll forming company.  According to EFD Induction US sales manager Mark Andrus, the welders will be used to weld profiles and beams. “Yet again,” commented Mr Andrus, “companies with the highest productivity and quality demands turn to EFD Induction when choosing their induction welders. These orders underline the unrivalled throughput and reliability offered by our Weldac systems.”  Weldac is the name given to EFD Induction’s range of solid-state induction welders. Featuring patented driver innovations, Weldacs use rugged IGBT transistors that are virtually short-circuit proof. Weldacs also feature continuous electronic load matching. The use of diode rectifiers means Weldacs offer a high constant power factor of 0.95 at all power levels, while also eliminating the need for costly reactive power compensation capacitors.
