When the changeover is complete the motorised roll positioning equipment, in conjunction with the HMI screen menus and recipes, positions the rolls at the predetermined optimum position for each product. While the mill is running, the tooling in the cassettes that are off-line are changed to the next size to be produced. The cassette-style stands are also used in the calibration section of the mill to make round, square and rectangular sections. On mills where a rotary sizing mill is used to make precision pipe, the cassette stands are used to make square and rectangular structural sections.

Designed to detect long, continuous, seam type defects in tube and bar, MAC’s Rotomac ® Z unit will be capable of rotating at 12,000 RPM with four test channels. The higher RPM allows faster throughput speeds on the production line, and the new design also provides greater convenience such as shorter setup time, and quicker and easier adjustments for different size products. Building on the success of MAC’s Echomac ® Rotary ultrasonic testers, the company will be featuring a new Spinning Tube ultrasonic test system at Tube 2014. This system features a unique APC (automatic pitch control) transducer carrier which contains the water couplant and follows and adjusts to the pitch of the tube as it rotates through the tester.

The fin passes are cassettes stands and typically consist of three four-roll stands where two of the rolls are driven in each stand. This design allows for a strong stand, and the added strength of the cassette results in lower distortion under load than the conventional stand configuration. The position of the rolls can be individually adjusted, and the position of the cassette can also be adjusted, which allows for easy adjustment of the pass line height.


