Reading reviews of several events this issue – such as Tube India and EuroBLECH – it was good to hear about rising visitor numbers and more companies taking up ever more floor space. Whatever advances we make, you just cannot beat that human interaction when completing a deal. systems – is generated to ensure that the component is identifiable throughout the process. The required data transfer can be done via an interface with CAD, ERP or other programs, which deliver the data relevant to the process. The software prevents collisions with the machine, the tools and also the surrounding area before initiating the bending process. The CAD program delivers the necessary machine and tool parameters online. In those cases where a robot is assigned a bending task it is possible for the necessary manufacturing data to be processed without having to program the robot. The software can adjust the bending speed on all transfluid machines for the specific product, in order to be able to process tubes safely and without oscilla- tions, which is particularly important for long, small-diameter tubes. A software module captures the status of the pro- duction process and provides the cen- tral systems with the production-related information about the status and the quality of the production (C pk ). transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH – Germany

Business leader award for SECO/Warwick SECO/Warwick has been given an award in recognition of the company’s strong market position, at the Business Leader Grand Gala 2018 for the second time. Thöni orders 55-MN aluminium extrusion press line from SMS group

The MIDIS (management information diagnostic indication system) technology package will allow for the administration of all product-relevant data. An IBA measuring and analysing system integrated into the control system will allow remote diagnosis. Directly downstream of the extrusion press, an advanced run-out will be installed by OMAV, another company in which SMS group holds a stake. Two high-performance cooling systems using spray water and air will cool the extruded profiles from an outlet temperature of about 520°C down to approximately 100°C. A special challenge here is to adapt the cooling rates to the product extruded in order to prevent profile warping. All cooling parameters will be recorded and managed by MIDIS. This makes sure that identical material properties such as strengths can be reproduced in follow-up orders − a must for the automotive industry. One double puller, one flying saw, one stretcher, one final cutting saw and an automation system complete the run-out area. Commissioning is scheduled to take place in the summer, and extrusion of the first billet is planned for 15 July.

Billet heating will be performed in a patented induction furnace – a combination of induction furnaces from IAS, a subsidiary of SMS group, and a gas-fired furnace from Extrutec GmbH. Aluminium bars will be stored in a warehouse, then heated to approximately 480°C in an inline furnace, sawn to a maximum length of 1,600mm and transported to the billet loader. The 55-MN front-loading extrusion press will be built to SMS group’s latest design and will be equipped with a precise linear guidance system for all moving main components, servo drive technology for all auxiliary functions, and the EcoDraulic concept to reduce energy consumption. The press will also have a modular process control system, part of which will be CADEX/3 (computer aided direct extrusion) for isothermal and isobaric extruding.

THÖNI group, headquartered in Austria, has placed an order with SMS group covering a press line for the extrusion of aluminium. The line includes a 55-MN front-loading extrusion press to process billets that have a maximum diameter of 304.8mm (12") and a maximum length of 1,600mm. This extrusion press will be the fifth that SMS will have installed for Thöni. The line is to be established in a new works at a recently developed location, and will produce profiles of aluminium and aluminium alloys for application in automotive and other markets. “From the end of 2019, the new line will produce about 8,000 tons per year of high-quality aluminium profiles for the European automotive industry,” said Helmut Thöni, CEO and shareholder of Thöni group. “Through subsequent processing we will refine these products ready for installation.” To satisfy its customer base, Thöni

Trumpf senior figure and par tner Ber thold Leibinger passes away PROFESSOR Berthold Leibinger

actively involved in supporting cultural and social initiatives, for instance in his roles as chairman of the Friends of the German Literature Archive Marbach and chairman of the International Bach Academy. He was a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). In 1992, Prof Leibinger established the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung, a not- for-profit foundation that dedicates its proceeds to cultural, scientific, religious and charitable purposes. In 2000 the foundation established the internationally renowned Berthold Leibinger Innovation Prize, which is awarded once every two years. It also presents its Comic Book Award on an annual basis. “Berthold Leibinger was a visionary engineer and entrepreneur. Everything he did was ultimately directed toward people’s welfare and the common good. He was an outstanding example to us all,” said Dr Jürgen Hambrecht, chairman of the supervisory board of the Trumpf Group. the first time. passed away in Stuttgart in October following a long illness. He would have been 88 in November. After studying engineering in Stuttgart and spending two years in the USA, Prof Leibinger joined Trumpf in 1961 when the company was still a fledgling machine maker. For his numerous inventions, which he made in the interests of the company, he received company shares. He became a partner in 1966 at the same time as becoming managing director. Under his stewardship Trumpf evolved into one of the world’s leading machine manufacturers. Prof Leibinger understood the poten- tial of light as a tool more than any of his peers, and he is now regarded as one of the pioneers in the industrial application of lasers. In 2005 he handed over the reins of the company to his eldest daughter, Dr Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller. His son, Dr Peter Leibinger, is vice-chairman of the managing board. His second daughter, Professor Regine Leibinger, works as an architect in Berlin. In addition to his work at Trumpf Prof Leibinger held

numerous other official positions in the German business community. These included his membership of the supervisory boards of Deutsche Bank AG and BMW AG as well as as chairman of the supervisory board of BASF SE. He was president of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of the Stuttgart Region and, from 1990 to 1992, president of the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA). Prof Leibinger was also

Schwarze-Robitec showcases technology at FABTECH

A FULLY electric multiple-radius tube bending machine featuring transport boost technology – the CNC 220 E TB MR – was successfully approved at the Schwarze-Robitec production site. Before final delivery to the customer, Schwarze-Robitec presented the tube bending machine at FABTECH in Atlanta. By showcasing it at FABTECH, the manufacturer demonstrated how even complex tube geometries with diameters of up to 8" can be produced swiftly, flexibly, precisely and efficiently. Schwarze-Robitec developed the tailor-made CNC 220 E TB MR tube bending machine for one of its American

multi-level technology integrated into the CNC 220 E TB MR allows tubes to be bent simply and precisely with very short lengths between bends. The machine’s NxG control system also contributes to the fast cycle times offered by the High-Performance series. By optimising time, travel stroke and speed on all CNC axes, production times can be reduced by up to 35 per cent. The energy-efficient CNC 220 E TB MR is equipped with bend former retraction as a standard, allowing the bend former and swing arm to be operated separately. This enables users to produce a diverse range of tube geometries while easily adjusting and positioning them during the bending process. Schwarze-Robitec has already prepared the CNC 220 E TB MR for future developments in the context of Industry 4.0. Hannover Messe 2019 trade fair

HANNOVER Messe is a trade show for industrial technology. It serves as a global platform for the digital transformation of production and energy systems. In addition to six exhibition sectors – IAMD (integrated automation, motion and drives), digital factory, energy, industrial supply, ComVac, and research and technology – there are special areas for start- ups and career development. More than 90 conferences and forums round out the programme. The next edition runs from 1 to 5 April 2019 in Hanover, Germany. For 2019, the guiding theme is ‘Integrated Industry – Industrial Intelligence’, which spotlights digital networking between humans and machines in the age of artificial intelligence. “Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionise the production and energy industries,” said Dr Jochen Köckler, chairman of the board of show organiser Deutsche Messe. “People teach machines to act logically and purposefully to meet customer needs. Primetals to modernise Kamran Steel rebar mill in Pakistan

x 130mm billets with a maximum length of 3m will be used, and the rebar mill will be able to roll up to 30 metric tons of steel bar per hour. Primetals Technologies is responsible for engineering the plant and will supply the required process equipment as well as electrics and automation. The mechanical supply includes revamping of the reheating furnace run out roller in order to allow direct billet transfer to the new continuous roughing train. The rolling line consists of a new eight-stand roughing mill with HVHVHVHV arrangement and a new six-stand intermediate mill in HVHVHV arrangement, both in-line with the existing finishing mill in order to eliminate cobbles. Both mills will be equipped with fifth-generation Red Ring stands. The scope of supply also includes hot cropping and emergency shears, a pinch roll, and a hot dividing shear in front of the cooling bed, which is followed by a cold dividing shear. Established in 1984, Kamran Steel produces billets of mild steel, spring steel, deformed bar/rebars, wire rod and a range of sections such as I-beam, H-beam and T-section. The company operates a fully automatic rolling mill with a production capacity of up to 25 tons per hour, which results in an annual production of 100,000 metric tons. It currently processes carbon steel billets with a square cross-section of 100 x 100mm. The finished products are rebars with diameters ranging from 9.5 to 40mm. After modernisation, 130

Made in Steel conference in Italy IN 2018 the steel industry gained the possibility to look at the future with a degree of positivity. In this context, the Made in Steel trade show for the steel industry will return in 2019, from 14 to 16 May. For the first time in more than a decade Made in Steel will have a midweek schedule, opening on Tuesday and closing on Thursday. The location, however, will remain unchanged – pavilions 22 and 24 of the fieramilano Rho in Milan, Italy. Similar to the the last edition, the major players of the steel industry will gather to do business and discuss the issues facing the sector.

Acero (PEASA) recently contracted Fives to design and supply a complete OTO tube mill line for its new Tubo Conduit plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The new plant, with a production capacity of 20,000 tons per year, aims to produce electrical mechanical tubing (EMT) for the conduction of electrical wires in industrial facilities, classified areas and corrosive environments. Fives, a long-term partner of PEASA, designed, manufactured and supplied the complete OTO tubemill line inAugust 2018. The OTO tube mill is equipped with an in-line tube galvanising system to achieve a long-lasting corrosive reduction that is essential in production of conduit tubes. Four interconnected buildings have been erected to improve distribution and communication in production processes. Kasto builds distribution centre for steel stockholder

The first Kasto store was installed in 1995, which over the years was supplemented by racking systems for tubes, stacking cradles for structural steel profiles, angles and boiler tubes, and a Uniline 3.0 sheet metal store with 610 cassettes. These investments were mostly driven by the objective of expanding the range and providing faster deliveries. Another board member, Eberhard Frick’s brother Hans-Jörg, explained, “At the moment, a lorry drives through seven areas for loading. If everything goes well, this takes 75 minutes. The objective was to reduce the time to less than an hour but in practice it has been shortened to just 15 minutes.” Kasto was selected for the latest proj- ect to supply the new bar storage sys- tem with central loading station linked to the stockholder’s IT system. The solution is based on a 115m-long, 15m-high

Three KASTOwin F bandsaws have been integrated into the system. Eberhard Frick, managing partner of Kicherer, commented, “We had a great range of materials but it was taking far too long to load the lorries. We needed something that was significantly faster than our existing stacking cradle system. To optimise material flow as well as increase storage capacity we decided to build a second steel centre, and approached two potential suppliers of bar storage warehouses, one being Kasto with which we have had a successful relationship for more than 20 years.” Kicherer ships 210,000 tonnes of steel per year. The IT departments at Kicherer and Kasto have jointly modelled all components of the new logistics system in unified software within the KASTOlogic warehouse management system. Kicherer tracks its steel profiles through the store using QR codes. Every bundle that has been picked is scanned again on loading, and its status is automatically entered into the material requirements planning software for full traceability.

A total of 58 per cent of exhibitors came from outside Germany. This represents a further increase in international attendance by 4 per cent. The preliminary results of the exhibition survey show that 37 per cent of visitors came to EuroBLECH from outside Germany, resulting once again in good international attendance. Major visitor countries, behind Germany, included Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, India, the UK, Poland, Austria and Belgium. A great majority of the visitors came from the industry (73 per cent), followed by visitors from workshops, trade and services. The most important sectors visitors belonged to included engineering, sheet metal and products, steel and aluminium construction, the automotive industry and its suppliers, electrical engineering, and iron and steel production, as well as rolling mills, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology.
