Welcome to the latest issue of Tube Products International magazine. This issue we have a very interesting magazine for you with features on pipeline inspection & corrosion protection and steel tubes as well as an interview with James Dunning of Syrinix and two extended articles starting on page 58. The first is an in- depth look at corrosion mechanisms processes by Quaker Chemical Corp, followed by a fascinating case study from Wichita Falls, Texas, USA, entitled ‘When the rain stops, look beyond the clouds’. This issue of the magazine is being distributed at Tube China in Shanghai. The show was last staged in 2012 and broke its previous attendance records: 1,399 exhibitors presented their machinery and products from tube and tube processing and cable industries, and there were 33,469 visitors. In addition to the strong Chinese participation, Tube China 2012 featured many European exhibitors and companies from traditionally well-represented countries such as North America, South-East Asia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Shanghai is one of the most spectacular and welcoming cities I have visited so the show should be a major success again this year. Next issue we have features on Tube India 2014, plastic and composite tubes, aluminium tubes, and chemical and pharmaceutical tubes.

Pipetech celebrates technical success Pipetech International, a provider of advanced and environmentally friendly water-based cleaning technologies to the oil and gas and petrochemical industries, has delivered its first pipe cleaning project since its recent acquisition by Ramco Tubular Services. 33m of the 20" line, including several 90° bends, was cleaned. The work was performed over three days and involved approximately 12 hours of cleaning time.
without incident, maintaining Pipetech’s zero LTI record.
Mr Bernhardsson added, “A pre- mobilisation site survey addressed the key questions regarding entry point and methodology for handling the scale once it was removed. The site survey and close coordination with our client ensured that the overall offshore execution time was minimised, delivering a safe, effective solution.” Ramco Tubular Services strengthened its position as a provider of tubular services by acquiring a controlling interest in Pipetech International AS in March. The acquisition enhances Ramco’s offering to clients and establishes a permanent presence in the UK for Pipetech. Pipetech International as – Norway pipetech@pipetech.no www.pipetech.no
Tomas Bernhardsson, the Pipetech supervisor for the project, said, “This was a relatively straightforward job for us which left our new client completely happy with the outcome. We are hopeful that the demonstration of our capability on this job will lead to more work where we can further demonstrate our ability to clean round multiple 90° bends over extended distances.” Pipetech adheres to strict HSE requirements when carrying out all projects. The Aqua Milling system scale collector was bolted to the entry point on the 20" line, providing an enclosed, safe operation, and preventing any spill or leakage into the environment. All scale was removed, collected and disposed of in a safe, clean and dry operation. The work was also performed
The project was completed offshore Denmark for a major Danish operator. Using Pipetech’s Aqua Milling system, the company was able to fully clean a 20" sea dump line blocked 80-90 per cent by hard scale. The Aqua Milling system is an effective mechanical method for removing scale and debris from pipes using nothing more than high-pressure/high speed water. The water was delivered through one of a range of specially developed nozzles deployed on the company’s Aqua Drill International flexible hose system.

OMS wins Queen’s Award for innovation Oil and gas pipe measurement specialist Optical Metrology Services (OMS) has won the 2014 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for its SmartFit™ service, a system for managing pipe preparation and fit-up in readiness for welding prior to pipe laying. (steel catenary
risers) and flowline pipes to tight specifications is critical. Counterboring the pipes might not be a viable method of controlling pipe geometry due to cost considerations or to limitations on pipe wall thickness. In order to prevent bottlenecks during welding and to minimise project delays and risks, oil industry owners, pipelay contractors
Used in the oil and gas industries, SmartFit ensures accurate fitment of pipes prior to welding and laying in trenches, preventing environmentally damaging leaks. OMS also developed bespoke laser measuring equipment and methodologies with supporting software, for optimising pipe fit-up. The service reduces costs through faster pipe laying and improves quality by eliminating mismatched pipe ends. Hugh Davies, client solutions director at OMS, commented, “Everyone at OMS is honoured to receive this award because innovation has always been a priority here and a cornerstone of this company’s growth and financial success over the years. Innovation is something that the UK excels at and so the competition for the Queen’s Award must have been intense.” Founded in 2006, OMS is a privately held company based in Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire, UK. The company also has an office in Houston, Texas, USA. Since 2006, OMS has grown company sales revenues by at least 100 per cent per year, with around 90 per cent of annual turnover from overseas customers.

and welders need to capture, record and analyse pipe end geometry quickly and accurately. This measurement data can help to ensure that pipes delivered into the bead stall will fit together within the welding specification requirements. Typically, end dimensioning and fit-up involves collecting pipe measurement data. Automatic, laser-based measure- ment tools are used to measure geometrical features of pipe ends, performed onshore or offshore. Data from laser measurement tools can then be made available to OMS’s SmartFit pipe optimisation software, which uses pipe measurement data to analyse, predict and control pipe fit- up, before the pipes are brought into the bead stall for welding. This averts production issues relating to poor fit-up and manages the assembly of problem pipes in order to maximise welding productivity. Each pipe end is measured, identified and entered into SmartFit, which then analyses fit-up of pipes, allowing the operator to mark the best rotational

British valve firm wins second Queen’s Award Valve engineering specialist Severn Glocon Group has been awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, International Trade for the second time in four years. The award recognises the British manufacturer’s three-year trajectory of continuous growth in overseas sales. Between 2010 and 2012 international trade increased by 120 per cent and now represents 68 per cent of total group turnover.
as the Middle East also played a major role in overall international sales.
The group has continued to invest in its facilities and infrastructure, including the relocation of established plant division Severn Unival to purpose-built £2.5mn premises; significant expansion of manufacturing facilities in India; and installation of sophisticated high- capacity cryogenic testing in Gloucester, UK. A Regional Growth Fund grant facilitated the opening of a dedicated valve innovation centre, which is one part of an enhanced focus on research and development that helps the group compete more effectively with larger US conglomerates. “The past three years have been the most dynamic in our 53 year history,” said CEO Maurice Critchley. “Many different strands of activity have come together, driving significant growth and success. I am proud to be at the helm of a progressive British engineering and manufacturing firm that delivers truly world-class valve products and technical advisory services.”
Growth was accelerated by strategic acquisitions of UK firms specialising in subsea and butterfly valves within the three- year timeframe. This diversification enhances the scope of the group’s British engineering and manufacturing capabilities for the global oil and gas industry. New developments in Australia, China, Brazil, India and Iraq played an important role in the award win. seen significant growth, with the group earning ‘top three cryogenic valve manufacturer’ status and securing several landmark LNG contracts. Bait Al-Aseel is a contractor servicing the power and energy industries in Kuwait. Its client list includes Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC), Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water.
Mr Burridge continued, “Having a place on the Statoil TR2000 approved supplier list will open up new opportunities that have been unavailable to us to date and will allow us to be more competitive in a fast-growing market. The experience we have gained throughout the process will prove invaluable in our future approval endeavours of other product lines, such as S32750 Super Duplex.” Fine Tubes has also announced that it has appointed Bait Al-Aseel to act as its agent in Kuwait. The decision forms part of a strategic plan to secure further growth in the market for exotic alloy tubing across the Middle East region. Demand for this type of tubing continues to increase in line with greater operating demands matched by a desire for an extended service life that traditional alloys are unable to achieve.
Nick Head, Fine Tubes business development manager for oil and gas/ chemical processes, commented, “The appointment of Bait Al-Aseel is an important one for us and represents a significant addition to the agent partnerships we already have in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Oman. We’re looking forward to working closely with them to develop new opportunities in this key market.”
Chris Burridge, customer quality engineer for Fine Tubes, commented, “The approval process allowed us to take a closer look at our manufacturing activities for this particular product line and refine them to meet with the requirements of NORSOK M-650.” Fine Tubes secured the approval by aligning its manufacturing process with NORSOK M-650 requirements, and providing compliance through an audit undertaken by Parker Hannifin and Statoil. Delivering safe, affordable water supplies to Kenya
Wim Roels, CEO of Borouge’s Marketing & Sales Company, commented, “Based on our significant experience in developing sustainable water systems in all kinds of terrains and urban environments, we are able to bring our expertise in plastic pipe solutions and networks to the people living in this Kenyan settlement. In Asia, we have also supported several local communities in India, Vietnam and China through our Water for the World programme, facilitating access of safe drinking water and better sanitation to schools and villages. This collaboration with WSUP is another opportunity where we engage with global NGOs to bring affordable, safe and clean drinking water to more homes.” WSUP chief executive Sam Parker noted that the key objective is to supply drinking water at an affordable price: “We achieve this by applying a model that strengthens the capacity of service providers to extend their services into low-income areas and informal settlements on a profit-basis, at the same time as offering water at a price less than half a cent per jerry can.”
Water for theWorld™, a joint Borealis and Borouge corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) have joined forces to supply Nairobi’s Mukuru Sinai and Korogocho informal settlements with improved access to drinking water. This will be achieved through a planned
An estimated 56,000 of Nairobi’s poorest residents will benefit from a programme initiated by four partner organisations. Co-funded by Borealis, Borouge and OFID, with implementation and project management by WSUP, the programme will deliver a safe and reliable water service costing a tenth of what residents currently pay to private water vendors.
approach to network design using high quality PE pipes and pre-paid water dispensers to provide water at a much lower unit tariff than they currently pay. “Using high quality PE pipes, we will reduce the non-revenue water lost due to leaks and illegal connections that impact on Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company’s financial ability to supply informal settlements around the city,” explained Borealis chief executive Mark Garrett. “The expected lifetime of these pipes is three times as long as existing pipes, and higher durability results in fewer pipe breakages, less contamination and leaks, and lower maintenance costs.”
