test probes as they rotate around the mechanical centre – an important factor in testing diameters as small as 2mm. Also on display will be the Echomac 25mm ultrasonic rotary for testing bar, and MAC engineers will be available to discuss the new Roto ux AC ux leakage tester for inspecting black bar. The Echomac 25mm UT Rotary provides 100 per cent coverage at high throughput rates on product ranging from 5 to 25mm diameter. The 630mm overall length of the rotary allows for ease of installation when upgrading existing inspection lines. MAC’s stand will also exhibit the Echomac SM, a UT instrument that covers numerous applications in a small package. MAC engineers will be present to discuss the full range of eddy current, ux leakage and ultrasonic test solutions for wire, rod and tube producers. Magnetic Analysis Corp www.mac-ndt.com At wire 2020 Maguire Europe will highlight an extrusion control system designed to provide accurate control of grams-per-metre yield and to improve product integrity. The Maguire + Syncro extrusion control system can be deployed in extrusion or co-extrusion operations and in new or retro t installations. Using data from a digital post-extrusion encoder and tachometer, the system adjusts extruder screw rpm and capstan speed to ensure tight coating tolerances and end-product consistency. In co-extrusion, ratio control provides accurate dimensions for multiple sheathing layers or identifying stripes. The system is composed of three basic components: the Maguire WXB weigh extrusion blender, which incorporates a gain-in-weight (GIW) weigh bin and a loss-in-weight (LIW) mix chamber; the Maguire 4088 controller, which controls the loading, blending and metering of raw material to the extrusion process; and the Syncro controller, which uses the consumption data from the 4088 controller and the downstream encoders to adjust line speed and haul-o . Modes of extrusion control include grams per metre (or ounces per foot) of extruded product, and kilograms (or pounds) per hour. Maguire Products, Inc Stand: 10 D37

Magnetic Analysis Corp (MAC) will be exhibiting the Rotomac 20mm eddy current rotary for testing small diameter wire and rod. The 20mm Rotomac provides high-speed testing of small-diameter wire and tube for surface aws such as seams and laps. Designed to operate at speeds up to 18,000 rpm, the rotary uses sensitive non-contact testing on product from 2 to 20mm diameter. Other features include an easily set up distance compensation – a critical factor in testing ovate wire, convenient dial-in diameter guide for dimensional changes, and simple probe replacement with quick twist-on bushing holders. A recent installation utilising the Rotomac 20mm rotary featured a test on stainless steel wire, such as A-286 alloy, often used for fabricating fasteners for high-temperature applications, including jet turbine engines for aerospace and turbocharged high horsepower engines in automobiles and trucks. This application can be challenging but the Rotomac 20mm rotary can provide accurate, reliable inspection to nd cracks that may form or enlarge after annealing.

Maguire + Syncro blender and controls

The system is the product of a partnership between Maguire and Italy-based Syncro Srl that began in 2016 with Maguire taking an investment position with Syncro – a specialist in controls for all types of extrusion process. The Syncro components in the extrusion control system include a master PLC touchscreen controller, digital encoder and tachometer, and a co-extrusion interface (one for each layer) that provides polymer consumption data from each additional extruder via the Maguire WXB blender. Because colour is a key factor in wire and cable for branding and coding, Maguire also supplies the MGF gravimetric feeder, which precisely measures the amount of additive that is fed directly into the extruder throat. “Over-colouring to compensate for possible inaccuracies in colour addition is a problem because it wastes a costly additive and can compromise electrical and mechanical performance,” said Paul Edmondson, managing director of Maguire Europe. “The MGF feeder prevents this by automatically recalibrating its dosage rate and holding the let-down ratio to within ±0.2 per cent.” Maguire also supplies raw-material vacuum loaders, ranging from a compact ‘mini-central’ loader to plant-wide systems. Applied to marginally straightened wire, so it can be tested, but not enough to excessively cold work and change the mechanical properties, the 20mm Rotomac has the ability to adapt carbide wire drawing nibs as bushings to hold the wire centred under the test probes. The distance compensation feature helps compensate for lack of straightness during testing, and a small bearing hub produces a precise rotation of the ▲ Rotomac 20mm eddy current rotary tester for inspecting wire and rod from 2 to 20mm diameter
