Conklad technology is available for applications such as AS wire, OPGW, CATV, sheathed composite cores, reinforced aluminium wire and similar products requiring an aluminium sheath or non-ferrous cladding. BWE’s SheathEx™ technology is a solution for seamless aluminium sheathing of high-voltage cables. ‘Corrugated’ (helical or annular) or ‘Smooth’ options are available. The SheathEx process provides a continuous and seamless aluminium sheath with no weld. The aluminium sheath has good conductivity and environmental properties, and is light in weight. BWE continues to develop new products, and a new Conform machine will be supplied to She eld University (UK) in 2020. Following extensive and successful trials at BWE, the university will use the machine to continue its development of processing titanium powders into solid wire or strip pro le for automotive springs. Other applications include wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), which is becoming a more attractive way of 3D printing metals. demonstrations are available at BWE’s headquarters in Ashford, Kent, UK. The company’s research and development department will consider and prove any new application prior to investment. Proving trials and

PTFE, polyimide, woven and non-woven tapes, which are sold globally. The focus is on mica tapes for re-resistant cables. Cable Tapes UK has continuously invested in new mica taping machines, and now has a large dedicated mica taping facility with a weekly capacity in excess of two million metres.

Mica tapes and spools

To support this growing production facility it has also invested in new machinery to slit and spool tapes in-house. The slitter is new and multi-functional, with both razor and rotating knife capability, and pre-sets in the software for the wide variety of materials to be slit ensure perfectly tensioned pads. Spooling machines can produce mini and maxi spools in traverse and step wound forms. Mica spools are joint-free, and long lengths have in excess of 20,000m of tape on each spool to ensure minimum machine downtime during use. These converting capabilities are also o ered to the company’s tape customers as a exible and fast turnaround supply option for custom supply packages from master rolls. Cable Tapes UK has helped cable companies with their development of re survival cables, working with customers to select optimum tapes to improve performance, factory processing, and production costs. The company o ers a wide range of premium re performance mica tapes. Its enhanced phlogopite mica tapes o er ame resistance and heat insulating properties together with good exibility and high tensile strength. These have been particularly successful in the ship wiring and rolling stock cable sector. The high exibility of the agship calcined muscovite mica tapes makes them easy to apply at high speed in narrow widths. The company has supplied many hundreds of tonnes of this mica tape and millions of metres of mica taped conductor for over ten years.

BWE also manufactures and supplies a complete range of cold welders and dies for welding non-ferrous materials, from ne wire to round rod. A range of machines will be on display and available for demonstration. BWE Ltd – UK www.bwe.co.uk ▲ A BWE Conform 550 installation for copper busbar and sections
