‘Awesome’, ‘upbeat’ and ‘buoyant’ were just three of the words exhibitors used to describe the return of Interwire to the US exhibition calendar. The Wire Association International’s (WAI) biennial event made a successful return to Atlanta, Georgia, in May after a four-year absence. And exhibitors and visitors alike headed into the World Congress Center, eager to resume face-to-face meetings and show off the technology that makes this exhibition one of the premier events in the calendar. A total of 335 companies – 30 of them first-time exhibitors – waited in anticipation for visitors to head to them on day one. And they were not disappointed. Alongside the exhibition, with its “inspired manufacturing” approach, keynote speakers provided their insight into an electrified future, while former astronaut Mary Ellen Weber gave two presentations in which she shared experiences of space travel. WAI president Kurt Breischaft enthusiastically added, “Record attendance at our Fundamentals of Wire Manufacturing course underscores the continued need for the Wire Association International’s focus on education.” Our review starts on page 32. “Quite simply a great person”, is how Steve Williams, commercial manager of Wrexham Mineral Cables (WMC), has been described, following his death after a short illness. Mr Williams, who worked for the company for over 16 years, strongly believed that there are still too many cables classed as ‘fire-resistant’ that would not be adequate in the event of a fire, as the tests they undergo do not represent real-world challenges, and he led the company’s lobbying efforts for all enhanced fire-resistant cable to undergo true fire scenario tests. Committing to a greener future As the world becomes increasingly aware of the effects of climate change, more companies are taking responsibility and making positive changes toward sustainability. It designs, develops and manufactures all parts and components for its machines in-house, using advanced systems technology, to provide a wide range of machinery for different wire types, from small single machines to complete lines and entire factories.
Wire machinery manufacturer Lämneå Bruk, located among forests and lakes in Ljusfallshammar, central Sweden, has tak en several measures for a greener future. The company was established in 1727 as an ironworks with a royal warrant, and started to specialise in the manufacture of machines for the wire industry in 1823.
Lämneå Bruk has a long history of utilising hydraulic power – a clean and renewable energy source. The company operates its own hydropower station, sourced from the lake next to its facility. This was the primary reason the company built its premises in this location more than 200 years ago. Around 50 per cent of the electricity used by the company comes from renewable energy sources, including its hydropower station. The company has also implement ed other sustainable practices. The workshop is heated by floor heating using sustainable woodchips, as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional heating options. Using woodchips reduces reliance on fossil fuels and contributes to reducing harmful emissions.

Lämneå Bruk is also promoting sustain able transportation for its employees, by providing electric charging stations and encouraging the use of electric vehicles. The company has moved away from traditional paper drawings to an all digital set-up by using computers in the workshop area to access relevant documents. This not only saves paper but also reduces the amount of energy required for printing physical documents. Lämneå Bruk AB www.lamnea.se

Sikora among Germany’s innovation leaders Bremen-based Sikora AG has been awarded as “Germany’s innovation leader 2023” by the FAZ-Institut. For the study, the worldwide patent applications of companies operating in Germany were analysed. As a measuring and control technology company, Sikora is again among the winners this year. The survey evaluated patent families from more than 500 technology and knowledge areas, looking at not only the number of patents submitted in the last ten years, but also their relevance. Index points were given for the companies analysed, taking into account whether the invention influences other inventions and how often a patent cites another patent family. The less often this is the case, the more innovative the patent is perceived.

Laboratory relocates from Düsseldorf to Neuss Buehler, a subsidiary of the American ITW Group based in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany, manufactures metallo- graphic testing equipment, cutting equipment, mounting machines, grinding and polishing equipment, hardness testers and hardness testing systems. Between September and December 2022, all equipment and materials had to be carefully packed and transported. The equipment for the new application laboratory was determined by the employees.
In the lab, customers and prospective clients can determine the best methodology for their sample preparation from trained Buehler professionals, and learn about the equipment and consumables. From the beginning to the end of the process, the staff provide expert guidance and advice. Before customers purchase new equipment and suitable consumables, all samples are correctly prepared. Daniel Peters, a long-time employee of Buehler, commented, “Our customers are mainly from the aerospace industry, electrical engineering and the automotive industry. In these industries, an incorrect preparation of the materials for assessment would be fatal.” Potential material defects or deterioration must be corrected immediately to avoid later failures at the earliest possible stage. Once customers have decided upon the right inspection device, they can expect simple, intuitive operation. Complicated training is no longer necessary and the analysis can be started immediately. Buehler ITW Test & Measurement GmbH www.buehler.com
In order to modernise and provide better accessibility to the company’s application laboratory, which was located in Düsseldorf, the management decided to gradually relocate to Neuss, which is more conveniently situated for transport.

years, enabling duty-free trade in goods between the EU and Mexico. “Mexico is a growing international location that holds enormous growth potential, especially for the wire and cable industries,” said Daniel Ryfisch, director of Messe Düsseldorf’s wire, tube and flow technologies portfolio. Paul St Amour, VP of Latin America for Tarsus Group, commented, “We are delighted to add another industry sector to Expo Manufactura so that it will continue to be the most important manufacturing trade show in Northern Mexico.” Application forms for participation in wire Mexico will be available from July.
The last Expo Manufactura, in February 2023, attracted 330 exhibitors, presenting more than 600 brands over the three days of the fair. More than 15,500 visitors from 26 countries travelled to Mexico – primarily machinery manufacturers, suppliers, metal fabricators and experts from the electrical and automotive industries. With a population of more than 130mn, large oil and gas reserves, and rich mineral resources such as gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper, Mexico is of interest to European and German investors in particular. Economic policy agreements such as the EU-Mexico Agreement have facilitated trade with Mexico for several
This demand has led Messe Düsseldorf to enter the Mexican market in 2024, initially as a special ‘wire Mexico’ pavilion as part of the established Mexican trade fair Expo Manufactura, which will be held from 30 January to 1 February 2024 at the Cintermex Centro Internacional de Negocios, Monterrey, in the northeast of Mexico. British Steel to offer alternative roles following coke ovens closure
“We appreciate this has been a difficult time for everyone involved and I’d like to thank our people and the trade unions for their professionalism throughout the consultation process.” The coke ovens situated at the company’s integrated steelmaking site in Scunthorpe are reaching the end of their operational life and their closure will bring environmental benefits inclu- ding reductions in emissions to air and water. British Steel Ltd www.britishsteel.co.uk
Following a review of the rationale behind the coke ovens proposal, and as a result of there being no compulsory redundancies among coke ovens employees, the trade unions have con- firmed that they will not object to the proposed closure and that the formal consultation process on this matter is now complete. A British Steel spokesperson said, “In the coming months we will press ahead with the closure of the coke ovens and we are pleased to say all employees affected by this decision will be offered alternative roles in the business.
British Steel has announced that it will offer alternative roles to around 250 employees affected by the closure of its coke ovens in Scunthorpe, UK. The company said that it had decided to close the coke ovens “as part of a drive to overcome global economic challenges and build a green and sustainable future”. Last year, the company’s bills for energy and carbon increased by £190mn, and it said decisive action is required because of the unprecedented rise in operating costs, surging inflation and the need to improve environmental performance.

Sector conductor dies to draw aluminium strands India’s Ajex & Turner Wire Technologies designs TW/sector conductor dies in PCD, VNT nano and carbide to draw aluminium strands to ASTM standards. The dies are suitable for various ACSR, ACCC, ACSS and ACFR specifications, among others. For smaller-diameter conductors, Ajex & Turner’s trapezoidal-shape dies can be enlarged to provide a greater cross sectional area of aluminium and match the diameter of the conventional round conductor.

The company states that its TW dies are designed to ensure accurate quality parameters, to obtain aluminium strands that are shaped to provide a smooth outer surface that can meet applicable ASTM standards. The dies are made from high quality raw materials – VNT nano, PCD and carbide – that enable them to be both efficient and durable. Climate friendly bow tackles energy prices The patented GreenBow2 is a closed-bow model that can provide energy savings on high-speed double-twist bunchers (560 to 800mm). Made of high-resistance aero-qualified moulded carbon, GreenBow2 has improved air penetration owing to its shape and a totally protected wire path. As a result, the final cable presents better characteristics, as wires are protected from aerodynamic turbulence. The risk of bow crashes is limited as there is no more cable “whip” effect: wires run through the composite, inside an easily removable wearing tube. GreenBow2 can be equipped with two different wire paths, depending on production requirements: spring tube for bare copper; or plastic tube for plated copper (tin, silver or nickel plated). It is available for Kinrei HK/NB560 and HK/ NB630; Niehoff D630, D631, D632 and D801; Samp BM 630; Northampton B630; SETIC TA560Ni, TC/TD560Ni, TA630Ni, TA630Ki, TC/TD630i and TC/TD 800Ni; and Lesmo DTO-630. Founded in 2003, when cable makers increasingly asked for SETIC bows for other machine brands, Bow Technology by SETIC offers a range of more than 655 designs. SETIC sas www.setic-pourtier.com
