An entire new challenge Facing challenges of a whole different nature is Nexans who, through its customer relationship with Programa Amazônia Conectada, is bringing high-speed data connectivity to a remote and environmentally sensitive region of Brazil. Last year, 470km of submarine fibre-optic cables were laid on river beds of the Amazon Basin, and this is now being added to with a further 620km scheduled for delivery in 2021. For the full story turn to page 18. Investment is high on the agenda for British Steel, bought out of liquidation last year by Jingye Group. It is investing £100mn in its manufacturing operations and supporting clean growth. During its first year as a new business, British Steel achieved operational improve- ments, launched new products, introduced 24-7 operations at its Teesside and Skinningrove mills in the UK, and resumed operational control of Immingham Bulk Terminal. More details on page 25. Automation is proving fruitful for Windak, which is highlighting this with its cable packaging equipment providing an increase in productivity and saving on cable packaging costs, optimising labour utilisation and reducing waste. Manual packaging can lead to delivery delays, with customers increasingly wanting speed and quality, and this is something Windak has addressed with its packaging machinery (turn to page 28 for full details). With the company stating that more than 40 per cent of labour cost in cable factories is in the packaging area, automation is ensuring quality and consistent accuracy, and reducing production down time. Themoney will help finance projects including a newbillet caster, a scrap pre-heating facility, cranes and a new environmental emission control system.

▲ Cokyasar has started production of steel wire in Albania
Taking experience further afield
Cokyasar Holding was founded by Ahmet Cokyasar in 1973. Despite the pandemic in 2020, it manufactured 180,000 tons of steel wire products in three modern facilities. 70 per cent of its products are exported to more than 80 countries. The company is now taking its experience in the sector abroad, with a new factory in Albania – CWI Albania – which has already started to manufacture steel wire. Cokyasar Holding is aiming for a manufacturing capacity of 45,000 tons of steel wire at its Albania facility. It will manufacture zinc alu steel wires and standard galvanised steel wires in a 1 to 5.5mm diameter range, to international standards.
CWI will supply steel wires to sectors including energy, auto- motive, construction, agriculture, gabionmanufacture and security. Erman Korkusuz, CEO of Cokyasar Holding, said, “We are going on our investments despite the global pandemic problem. CWI – Cokyasar Wire Industries is an investment needed for European and Balkan countries. We are proud of supplying this need with our Turkish based company.” The company plans to accelerate its other foreign investments with the success of CWI. Cokyasar Holding www.cokyasarholding.com.tr

Nexans contract to bring high-speed connectivity to Brazil’s Amazon region
Nexans’ Submarine Telecom and Special Cables (STSC) business is continuing to develop its customer relationship with Programa Amazônia Conectada (PAC) to bring high-speed data connectivity to a remote and environmentally sensitive region of Brazil. The project involves laying fibre-optic cables on the riverbeds of the Amazon Basin. In 2020, 470km of submarine cables were delivered, taking the total length installed so far to 1,170km. This has now been followed by an order for a further 620km of cable, scheduled for delivery in 2021. The Amazônia Conectada project is a strategic initiative developed by the Brazilian Army, with the support of the country’s ministries of defence, health, education and communication. The overall plan is to install approximately 6,000km of sub-fluvial fibre-optic cables in rivers of the Amazonas region to provide efficient and reliable Internet connection. This will bring connectivity to more than 50 cities and 4.5mn people,
cables are designed to provide the latest communications technology with no need for maintenance. Tests carried out by the Brazilian authorities prior to approval confirmed that the URC-1 cables would emit no pollutants into the river. The latest order for the Amazônia Conectada project is one of many won by Nexans STSC, which ended 2020 with a record order backlog. The main contracts are for customers in South America, Asia-Pacific, Africa and Europe. They make use of STSC’s complete diversified submarine product portfolio, from control umbilicals and remote operated vehicle cables (ROVs), to the energy industry and fibre-optic cables for the offshore telecom industry. All of the cables will be manufactured at STSC’s plant in Rognan, Norway, with project execution and engineering split between the plant and the Norwegian office in Oslo. Nexans www.nexans.com

providing opportunities for improving public health and education, and supporting sustainable development. Nexans has been involved from the start of the project in 2015. It has supplied un-repeatered submarine fibre optic cables (URC-1) with 100GB/sec data transmission capacity for the four phases completed to date. When delivered, the latest order will take the total length of cable supplied to 1,790km. Because the project is taking place in the rainforest area, environmental factors are of critical importance, so the cables are being laid on riverbeds rather than being installed on aerial towers that would need trees to be felled. Industry 4.0 pavilion at Interwire to reveal future of manufacturing
The Wire Association International (WAI) has announced recent developments by its Industry 4.0 Task Force, along with the participation of Messe Düsseldorf North America, toward the introduction of an Industry 4.0 Pavilion on the Interwire 2021 exhibit floor at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC), Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The new show dates are 26-27 October, 2021. The goal of the new venture is to establish and showcase relevant machinery, software and process demonstrations that illustrate smart technology as it relates to the wire and cable making industry. The space will include 12 companies, half of which will represent the smart manufacturing field; the other half will showcase companies, established within the wire and cable industry, that have adopted these or other new technologies in their processes and equipment. Space among the exhibits will be dedicated to brief, scheduled demonstrations within a socially distanced theatre configuration.
Following the Industry 4.0 theme for Interwire 2021, WAI is planning an allied educational programme with presentations from the smart technology field as well as its traditional technical papers. Commenting on the new venture, 2021 WAI president Thomas Heberling said, “WAI has a proven 90-year history of providing stellar educational experiences to the industry. This new pavilion at Interwire will serve WAI’s mission and introduce new technology that affects our stakeholders. We are pleased to build a relationship with Messe Düsseldorf North America for a co-created pavilion that may be repeated at future events.” Tom Mitchell, president of Messe Düsseldorf North America, commented, “As the US subsidiary of Messe Düsseldorf, the organiser of wire Düsseldorf, we have been active in the North American market for over 30 years in the wire and cable industry and serve as a link for US and international
companies to access markets all over the world. This partnership on the Industry 4.0 pavilion at Interwire 2021 with WAI is a logical continuation to open up new market opportunities, [and] expand on the technological and educational advancements on this continent.” Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, Germany, is one of the world’s largest organisers of international trade shows for the machinery, medical, retail, lifestyle and leisure industries. Its trade shows bring together companies from around the world, connecting industry leaders from small businesses to global players. CMS obtains Deutsche Bahn rail control certification
Contrôle Mesure Systèmes (CMS) has specialised for more than 30 years in the design and manufacture of non-destructive testing products. The company develops eddy current and ultra-sonic systems, and combines these two control methods on complete inspection benches. For several years, the company has been working on a system of rail inspection, composed of rotating probes. The principle is simple: two probes, placed on either side of the train, are rotated at very high speed in line with the rail running surface in order to detect possible surface/fatigue defects. For nearly three years, the company has been working on the mechanical and technical improvement of the device. An electronic distance compensation system has been designed to avoid position variations between the rail and the EC rotary probe. CMS has also worked on the ease of calibration of the device, so that it can inform the operator of the depth of defects found on the rails.
The robustness of the system was one of the key elements the company emphasised, since the device in action is subject to wear factors such as dust, friction, humidity and cold. The system is also designed to be easy to use and operate. When defects are identified, the control system sends information to the supervision of the train that operates a rail grinding device. The rails are checked again in successive passes to verify that the defects have been eliminated by the grinding operation. This is repeated as many times as necessary.
The approval issued by Deutsche Bahn is one of the most comprehensive in the field and is used as a reference. It is required in several countries to have access to the rail inspection market. To obtain the approval, CMS and its partner have had to carry out a series of tests with the organisation since 2017, and pass all of the accreditation stages. The company is now able to work in various countries with an efficient and certified system. Contrôle Mesure Systèmes www.cmseddyscan.com
