Power to the city The US department of energy has issued the final environmental impact statement (FEIS) for the $2.2 billion Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) transmission line. The333-mileHVDCline,underdevelopment by Transmission Developers, is scheduled to run from the Quebec border and under Lake Champlain and parts of the Hudson River to New York City. FEIS was issued on completion of the environmental review, carried out by the department of energy in cooperation with other federal and state agencies.
The transmission project will deliver up to 1,000MW of wind and hydropower to the New York metro area. Transmission Developers CEO Donald Jessome said: “The CHPE transmission line will provide clean, affordable power while minimizing community and environmental impacts, and it offers a creative solution to meet the energy challenges of the future.” The project is expected to reduce energy costs for consumers and businesses by $650 million per year, as well as help New York meet its clean energy goals and increase the security of the state’s electric grid.
