Fiber optic cables to boost revenue

Kenya Power plans to connect its two million customers with fiber optic cable in a move set to change Internet connectivity in the country. The firm plans to expand its existing infrastructure and lay fiber optic cables to its clients in its bid to protect earnings, which have dropped by 5.7 percent. The power distributor’s acting managing director said the firm is now focusing on expanding and leasing fiber optic to its client list in a bid to diversify revenues. Safaricom, Jamii Telcoms, Kenya Data Network and Wananchi are among the power distributor’s clients, which is also looking to sign up new clients including its sister parastatal, KenGen, and the mobile phone service provider Airtel. The firm is also in talks to sign up a company from Uganda, signaling the growing opportunities in regional countries. Kenya Power plans to roll out about 25,000km of fiber optic network across the country. In 2012 the firm laid only 200km of fiber, but had received contracts to lay 400km of fiber this financial year. It now has over 1,800km of fiber optic connection.
