Superconductor for Chicago grid
American Superconductor (AMSC) has contracted Nexans to produce a cable for the Resilient Electric Grid (REG) project in Chicago. The cable, together with a special jointing system, will be deployed in a Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) substation. AMSC and ComEd entered into a commercial contract as part of a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate initiative to secure the United States’
electric grid against extreme weather and other catastrophic events. The high current density of the REG cable will be a key advantage for ComEd, enabling a compact installation footprint in densely populated urban areas. Using AMSC’s Amperium superconductor wire, Nexans will manufacture the cable at its specialized superconductor facility in Hanover, Germany. Cable installation in Chicago is scheduled for the end of 2020.
