Calculating cable
Following its successful launch in France in 2014, Nexans’ online Easycalc TM sizing tool is now available in Belgium. The Belgian version has been specifically developed to suit the local needs of projects in Belgium regarding national installation standards, and facilitates the use of cables that comply with local standards. The tool also takes into account the specific sizing challenges associated with fire-resistant cables, since the regulation simply advises that the designer should consider the higher resistance due to fire and the corresponding voltage drop. This can mean that using the standard formula to calculate the voltage drop will often result in the specification of an inadequate cable size. Practice shows that installers and engineers find it difficult to determine the size in this situation. To calculate the cable sizing of fire-resistant cables, the Belgian version of Easycalc draws on the Wiedemann-Franz method, generally perceived by the Belgian cable industry as “good practice”. Easycalc is accessible from the Nexans website and is available as a tablet or smartphone application. The new version allows users to switch between French and Belgian-specific sizing. Nexans plans to deploy Easycalc to other countries, with appropriate country-specific options and rules.
